Drouin back skating today at team facilities for the first time in months. Despite this, Big Georges Laraque stated that he knows what information David Ettedgui has and that "knowing what David knows, he wouldn't plan on Drouin being in the line-up to start the season either." So still completely unclear what is going on, but now multiple sources telling us to expect Drouin will not be with the Habs or not be ready for opening day. Has he asked for a trade? Is he still in therapy/rehab? Is he injured? Can't help but think this has been one of the worst off-seasons in Habs history... Weber, Danault, Tatar, Kotkaniemi, Fleury, Perry all gone. Byron out long-term. Drouin maybe not ready or back at all. Price not clearly ready to start the year either. Joel Bouchard leaving mysteriously as well. Sounds like there is some discontentment within the organization.

You failed to mention the Logan Mailloux fiasco

What I am really trying to say is this, I would match the KK OS not because of Suzuki, that was just an observation as to why we should focus on locking our young guys up early and not trying to low ball them. I would match the OS because the compensation is not enough to let KK go, lets assume that Carolina finishes in the 15-25 range in the draft. Is that pick going to be better than KK is right now or help us in the next 2 years before Price and Petry look at retirement like KK would? No definitely not, IF we do match our team does still have 2 major holes 3C and a 2RHD. Without KK though our team is missing 2C, 3C and a 2RHD, plus we no longer have any leverage in a trade to upgrade the C position. Even if the plan is to keep KK for 1 year and trade him later or go to arbitration it is still better than losing any momentum and wasting more of Price and Petry's time.

I'd say yes pick #20 (for arguments sake) will be better than KK, especially when you take into account the cap $ that can be spent elsewhere. 2022 is a very deep draft

Also, if you're focusing your attention on winning a cup for Price or Petry , you risk your scenario of missing the playoffs for 10 years. I'm ok with losing this year, if Weber intends to return in 22-23 then lets tank and make a serious run the next season. Maybe I'm just still on a high from beating TO and making the finals but I'm ok with it.

KK holds his fate now, if we match I don't see him signing an extension for less $ with us, and then whats his trade value? basically nothing. He's going to be berated by our fans wherever he plays, so let him go.

  3. I really like Bergy, yes I've been sour at times but I think he's made some great signings and trades. Maybe his draft record isn't the best but considering where we usual pick he's done well imo. He just seems to fail when drafting for need (Chucky-C, McCarron-Big body, KK-C) instead of BPA . And those misses get magnified when it's 3OA. I'm glad he's hard balling players, KK hasn't really shown that much and with very little to no progression. I'm for letting him walk, seeing where we stand this season and having a stellar draft at home. Also, have to remember that if Caro losses 1st and 3rd they don't have much "bait" to get better during the season for a good playoff run, if they're even in the hunt. This could very well be there only move.

    2. Sure, we may have wanted to sign JK to 2.5-3M AAV for 2 years, but that's no longer an option. Now the choices are 6.1M AAV for one year or lose him for what likely amounts to a late 1st (with a 40-50% chance of becoming an NHLer and a 5% chance of becoming a top 6 player) and a 3rd (10-15% chance of becoming an NHLer). The odds are largely in favor of Kotkaniemi providing more value than the picks. That makes it an easy decision to keep JK. Deal him in a year if he doesn't pan out. But you keep him and you play him in the top 6 all year and frankly I think the odds are good that he puts up 45-50 points this season, maybe more.

I'm not into debating or anything but I think you'd need to adjust those numbers with this upcoming draft class, and although "likely" a late pick with their roster moves this off-season stranger things have happened

  5. Going after Necas or not, I think the Canes will be forced to extend him for more $ than they were hoping for as the threat of an offer sheet will undoubtedly be brought up by his agent.

I also think the Poehling signing just a day before this offer sheet was signed shows that MB probably had a feeling that it was in the works.

It'd be nice to have a poll added to this thread to see where we all stand.

Any news as to when MB will be making a statement?

I guess it all boils down to how badly Montreal wants KK...a similar deal could be worked out with him as Carolina is offering him where he would get a chunk up front for the 1st year and then a more reasonable salary in the $4 mill range for 3 or 4 years of term ....you know the Habs decision will also be based on at least 3 essential RFA contracts coming due in the next 2 years ...the other factor is how does KK even play again in Montreal ?...the fans will see this as a betrayal either way ...

Yeah I'd be booing for sure (all in good fun, I don't blame him for chasing $) but if you don't want to sign with the team that chose you well ahead of where you were projected to go, kept you in on the opening day roster, and developed you, then go enjoy Carolina.

Question: Can the team (Mtl or Car) extend him for less than what next years qualifying offer would have to be ($6mil plus)?

For sure.  We haven't filled that #1 LD for a few years,  and,  if we consider,  Weber was a #1 or #2 RD, we haven't filled that opening either. We absolutely,  can not go into the season with these defence pairings and expect to make the playoffs.  Did Barrie sign yet? I'm not a big fan,  but he is better than what we have.

    He reupped with Oilers

a LOT of non-hockey fans there i think, just out for an evening.  I found it funny when they were cheering for an icing.

non-hockey fans just looking for air conditioning without the slot machines in the background. Wasn't it 42C there on Monday?

The move to put Armia on that line was a stroke of luck or genius or both. Its completed that line in a way I never thought it could because Armia gives the other 2 guys time and space which is exactly what they need at this stage. They are both supremely skilled players they are just long in the tooth so giving them that extra step or two that Armia's board work can do is just the ticket.

I will eat a whole big bowl of crow on Staal whom I was wanting to bench but has proven to be a huge asset so far.

Thankfully we've been good at boxing out the defensive zone but i agree a few times theyve been caught against the jets' faster players and it has been a bit hairy.

I can't seem to shake the feeling our "4th line" will form a line for the leafs next season. Dubas is salivating watching these guys
