  1. That's what training camps are for to evaluate the prospects and see where it will be most beneficial to the players development to play. I believe it was established that he has a pretty good ability to speak English, so getting used to playing in smaller arenas will be the biggest hurdle for him to cross. This could be accomplished in the AHL or the NHL depending on his skill level, it sounds like his time would be better spent with the Habs with his skill.

Some players skill level will make it detrimental to send them to the AHL.

I don't know. We haven't really seen his skill... Only read about it. I would be shocked if he had the talent level to make the NHL this season, especially so if it were straight out of camp. I fully expect that he will be starting the year in Hamilton. We are already chockablock full of forwards, with room for maybe one prospect to make the team. I don't expect that will be Alex.

I think most GM's knew his skill level they just didn't trust the Russian factor.

    it sounds like?

What article/ Video/ report did you see or read that stated that this kid was ready for the NHL.

Let's see what he can do in training camp before creating expectations. Odds are that he should be going to the AHL.

That is what training camp is for.

Eller is not hurt seriously. Pac is likely more ready than Avtsin, especially for 3rd line duty.

Even if Avtsin is NHL ready, he could still go to the A to mature and get to understand the NA game (small ice....)

Learning to play on smaller ice can be accomplished at the NHL level and when players have a high skill level some stay at the NHL to learn.

  2. But how serious is Eller's injury? I thought it was a minor injury and that he would be ready for the regular camp later this month. Even if it were more serious I cannot imagine someone like Ben Maxwell or Max Pacioretty being over-looked in favor of Alex unless he has a mind-blowingly awesome camp. ;)

Apparently Avtsin compete level is off the chart so don't be surprised at what he can accomplish.

Someone has a position to fill if Eller is injured, it wouldn't surprise me to see Avtsin take that spot.

  4. Hamilton to start the year.

  5. The best answer to that question would have been Bill Guerin. Big guy, plays in the corners and in front of the net and has been able to score his whole career. Debatable what his production will be like without Crosby, but I think he would have been a solid veteran to have in case AK or Pouliot faltered. At this stage, I believe he would have signed for something in the 1 million range. Obviously now there is no cap space for him nor is there an evident roster spot, but he is one of the few players left who I think would have been an upgrade of sorts for the Habs.

Guerin has been a great player and team player, if he can be had for 1mill. he would be a steal.

  6. whats the deal with this kid i know we have him yannik weber and subban and all three are offensive defensemen i know carle is a decent sized defender which is good but i havent seen play any games in the nhl

Well from what I recall three seasons ago when Weber was a rookie in Hamilton, Carbonneau was going to give Carle a shot with the Habs but he got injured in a pre-season game and he hasn't had much luck he keeps getting injuries and stiff competition from other Hab prospects or UFA's.

  7. I think this kid is the most under rated prospect in the system at the moment, this won't last long mark my words, he may be our best RW in decades.

I say these things after following every article I could find about him over the last year or more. Big things are expected for Avtsin in Russia and they have been watching him play for a few years. So even though I only see clips of his play so I will defer to those that have compared him to Ovechkin and expect great things as they do.

  8. I apologize in advance for what I'm about to say... This is going to be a rant.

I'm really upset at the organizers of capsule sportif for the whole Halak signing today.

The wife spent her day waiting in line only to be turned away at 5:30pm. I understand that Halak stayed much later than expected, but the organizers could've been a lil more thoughtful, a lot of people spent their day waiting for a signature they never received!

The wife got to fairview at around noon and already there was a big line up(some had been there since 9am). She constantly called me asking how important it was for me. I asked her if they had closed the line and she told me they hadn't. So, I figured they would at least let the people who had waited all day, get their chance. Not only did they NOT have a cut off point, the wife kept asking them (security and the organizers) when they would shut down and if she had a chance of getting an autograph. They kept telling her to be patient, so she stayed in line, only to be told at 5:30pm to go home.

C'mon, people spent their Saturday waiting in line (a lot with young children) only to be turned away. I wouldn't be so po'd if they had just told people at 3pm that they were closing the line. Then people could've gone on with their day. I didn't even spend my day in a line and I'm upset!

I've been to these sort of things before and usually, they have a cut off point. At least this way people don't waste their time. I especially feel bad for those people who waited all day with their kids. At 3pm, they could've split up the line and told those on the other side of the line (or those who came after 2pm-which was when Halak was to finish his autograph session), that there wasn't time and they'd have to send people home.

I mean seriously, I almost took the day off work (and Saturday's are usually my big days). I would've wanted someone's head if I had waited 5 1/2 hrs only to be turned away. I feel like writing either Habs inside out or Boone explaining my frustration.

This is in no way directed at Halak, from what the wife says, he was really nice... Specially when he stayed til 5:30 (he was originally suppose to be there from 12-2pm). Halak was a good sport about the whole thing, I'm just really upset at the organizers.

I know that this in no way will appease you, but Halak will be back in Montreal for signings I'm sure. You can always get Carey Price's autograph anytime though and I have a feeling it will be the more sought out than Jaroslav's in the long run.

  9. Actually,yes...I always assumed that Val indeed was doing his own singing....which always game me more admiration for this movie/as well as Kilmer's acting.....unbelievable indeed.

Yes that's a mind blower, who would have thought that Kilmer Could have sung most of those.

Great bands at Bayfest in Sarnia Ontario every summer..I'll post the 2011 line-up when it's released

Sarnia sounds like a real rock "n" roll kinda town.

  12. Best case scenario he could become a lesser version of Alex Burrows, though it's probably a long shot.

I didn't think Lapierre would still be playing for the Habs a couple of years ago.So he's really shocked me the way he keeps taking his game to a different level, I can't wait to see what he has in store for the opposition this year.Max hasn't had linemates like the Sedin's even for a couple of games,so my thought is his game is probably ahead of Burrows already.

Mind you I may be a little less objective than others. Go Max Go!

  13. I think the mindset for Benoit this summer has been to bulk up so that he can't be pushed off the puck so easily and can park himself in the goalies crease. This would make sense given that Gomez is setting him and Gionta up all of the time, and both Gionta and Gomez are pretty good defensively.

  14. I'd like to see Pyatt aim for more than 15 points. Yes he's young and yes he's going to play more of a defensive role, but I think he'll get decent minutes and likely play on the third line at least some of the year. He seems to be a smart player and a decent skater and I'd like to see him take advantage of that. I don't see why he can't contribute the same way we'd like to see Max Lapierre contribute and put up 25 points or so. The Habs need to develop more scoring depth, and I think the guys who emerge on the third line this year need to be able to contribute at least 10 goals each. If Pyatt ends up playing sparingly on the 4th line, I'd accept less output from him, but the Habs have accepted poor offensive production from the third line guys for too long and it's time to ask the checkers to go to the net and get some garbage goals.

This was Montreal teams in the past bread and butter without which the Big lines would have had to carry the teams. The reason or part of the reason the Habs were so successful was that every line was relentless in forechecking and secondary scoring from all players. If the third and fourth line players were scoring 15 goals and 10 respectively the Habs would win the Cup.Look through the history of the Habs and you will find players that would be front line players as checkers for the Habs.
