  1. Wendell Berry & Gary Snyder - a film put out by the Lannan Foundation. Each writer reads a long prose piece and a few poems then answers some questions in an informal panel. 8/10
  2. Instances like these are especially poignant to me because you can be almost certain they are completely honest. There's no feeling of obligation in your nephew or in a group of 14-year-olds; they are just genuinely happy to see us.
  3. Colfax Abbey - Halflife but it's pretty boring...thinking I might change it.
  4. To lighten the mood, I'll write about my good day. This afternoon several of my students approached me at the end of the day to give me a very heartfelt thank you. They told me that, while they kind of like the weekends, they also don't because they miss me. I had a nice drive home as a result.
  5. The Room - .5/10 It really is terrible.
  6. No problem. Bragg's tunes like the above that really probe human emotions are more to my liking than is overtly political lyrics.
  7. Billy Bragg - "Levi Stubbs' Tears" With the money from her accident She bought herself a mobile home So at least she could get some enjoyment Out of being alone No one could say that she was left up on the shelf It's you and me against the World kid she mumbled to herself CHORUS: When the world falls apart some things stay in place Levi Stubbs' tears run down his face She ran away from home with her mother's best coat She was married before she was even entitled to vote And her husband was one of those blokes The sort that only laughs at his own jokes The sort that war takes away And when there wasn't a war he left her anyway Norman Whitfield and Barratt Strong Are here to make right everything that's wrong Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too Are here to make it all okay with you One dark night he came home from the sea And put a hole in her body where no hole should be It hurt her more to see him walking out the door And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the floor When the world falls apart some things stay in place She takes off the Four Tops tape and puts it back in its case When the world falls apart some things stay in place Levi Stubbs' tears...
  8. I know I've probably come around here to rate this before, but it's so good it warrants multiple ratings... Cool Hand Luke: 10/10
  9. Krzysztof Penderecki - Canticum Canticorum Salomonis
  10. Guatama Buddha Gary Snyder Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) Lee "Scratch" Perry
  11. I could watch Fawlty Towers probably every day, and that's saying a lot since there are only 12 episodes!
  12. I, too, paid tribute to the recently passed Mark Lavon Helm this afternoon and did so chronologically: listened to some old Ronnie Hawkins tunes, Levon & the Hawks, Music from Big Pink, The Band, Rock of Ages, and Levon's solo record Dirt Farmer...all listened to while working of new house and land blasted from a series of speakers strategically pointed out the windows. While I love Levon's voice and really dig his drum style, my favorite member of The Band is and forever shall be the one and only Garth "Honey Boy" Hudson. And as far as vocals go, for me, Levon is second behind the masterful pipes of the also departed Richard Manuel--no other male vocalist has brought tears to my eyes.
  13. make elderberry syrup: the glory of heavy metal: Next time I'll post old skate videos.
  14. Other than a few select series that I borrow from the library, I don't watch much television. I find myself checking out Fawlty Towers, Fishing with John, early Simpsons, Freaks & Geeks (mostly for nostalgia), Monty Python's Flying Circus, season 1 of Home Movies, uh...that's about it.
  15. I just spent 9 hours outside working on garden plots, brush cutting, and fence reparation then came inside and roasted a chicken.
  16. Rockers - 6.5/10 The Harder They Come - 4.5/10
