This is a completely unsubstantiated rumour (i read it on a different board) but since there's been very little 'real' rumours and there's some interesting components to it, I thought id post it.

Someone has suggested that MB is basically done trying to trade (assets) for a top pairing LD because he feels like we're a couple of years away from having guys who can fill that role.  He thinks we need a band-aid, short term solution, and that option could come in the form of Weber's old Team Canada Partner: Duncan Keith.   Now, yes, Duncan Keith is 36 years old. And yes, he has a cap hit of $5.5m  but the idea is that we would have to give up far less to Chicago than say Sanheim or similar - and the Hawks would retain $2-3m of his salary.  Duncan Keith still scored 40 points last year & his skating is still elite.

He's signed for 4 more years (till he's 40) so thats a real concern, but if Chicago was to retain say $2.5m  that means our cap hit for Keith would be 3m. Thats amazing for a top pair guy, and honestly you can live with it as he drops down the depth chart over the next couple of years. Even on the 3rd pair its not terrible.

Obviously we all know the Chicago Connection with MB. The Hawks have absolutely loaded up with DMen this summer too (Keith, DeHaan, Maatta, Gustafsson, Koekkeok and Dahlstrom are all LD) so it sure looks like someone is on the move.    I guess the real question is what they'd want in return. A prospect, im sure (as this would at least in part a salary dump) but its something interesting to consider, not sure if there's any validity to it at all.

    Keith - Weber
    Mete - Petry
    Kulak - Juulsen
    Chiarot

    Don't hate it.

I agree, I don't want to move any of our top end prospects for an older rental.  I believe my dismal outlook on the habs is a direct result of MB's bungling.  That offer sheet of Aho was a complete joke and made the whole organization look bad, the fact he can't fill the hole in our line up a blind man could see just baffles me.  Why is it that it seems only us fans see MB as a complete disaster as a GM.

The bid for Aho was smart. Canes aren't known for spending money and they'd just taken on the full value of Marleau's contract to buy it out. Bergevin added more dead space to that. They matched because their organization is dead if they don't pony up and spend with the big boys, but Carolina is losing money this year; although, kudos to them for not Melnyking their players.

There was a chance that we would get Sebastian Aho on a contract that wouldn't screw our cap and that's something. In 5 years he walks to FA and will be worth possibly more than 8 AAV. We'll see where we both are in 5 years.

You mean EXACTLY like they do with Weber. All too often we see players whip right by Weber when Mete has pinched in and then Mete has to use his speed to get back into the play so it's not a breakaway or 2 on 0. Also Markov may have lost a step but there is ABSOLUTELY no way he can ever be as slow as Weber even on one leg. As for your last sentence there is a simple solution DON'T play Weber and Markov on the same PP unit WOW that was hard to come up with I am so exhausted by trying to figure that solution out. I will add though that the last thing we need is another Dman without moving someone out.

Whoa. Just returned to the forum and tired of this guy's attitude already. Don't care if I made it personal; there's no need for this stuff.

Id be ok with Hughes too.  One of those 3.

Unless Timmins has a guy we're not even looking at that he is certain is going to be the steal of the draft.  Price was way off the board when we picked him but Timmins said despite our depth in goal, they knew he was going to be a generational talent and it was worth taking the risk on.

He's been speaking a lot about positional need and taking the player that he feels will be a key part of the team moving forward. I think that guy is Kotkaniemi. When asked if he'd trade down he replied that the risk you run is that the player you gave up assets to draft isn't there. He mentioned they were prepared in any event and had several players that they were high on given their availability and our interest. The only example he listed was if Carolina were to make an unforeseen move at #2. So I think he stays at 3. We either draft Kotkaniemi or there's a minute chance we get Svechnikov.

Or it's Zadina, or Veleno, or Hughes.. I don't know, I'm just a guy.

  5. I think they got good value back and didn't demand more because Galchenyuk's value was at all time low for a player with his potential. So their plan is to draft Kotkaniemi and have pieces like Drouin, Domi, Scherbak, Gallagher, Hudon, Mete, Juulsen play alongside him in a few years.

Who plays 1C in the meantime? Can Ryan Poehling also step into the Top6?

Who do we acquire with all this cap space?

If Price doesn't step up, do they risk hurting his pride and choosing Lindgren over him?

What do we see from Shea Weber?

  6. He will and it won't be disastrous. He'll sign  a 1 year 1 million two-way contract. He'll play at least 19 games for the Canadiens then he'll  either travel with the team through the  playoffs or we miss again and he's traded to a contender for a chance at the Cup. Then he'll either resign elsewhere or retire with 1000 games played as a hab.

I actually think you could get more from edmonton for weber.    Weber for 10th overall, RNH and maybe even one more piece from them.  I could see Chiarelli covet Weber more than MB does.  Not only that he (Weber) would actually make a massive difference on their defense. Their group isnt terrible they just lack that one stabilizing force. Add him & everyone moves back. I think they'd be instantly better.

Unfortunately I dont think MB will trade him. I think odds are he's our next captain & I think MB still wont admit he lost that trade meaning Weber is ours as long as MB is GM.

    Love your thinking though.

We have a potentially great replacement in Timmins. I think our greatest problem is with Molson because if he really cared about the team on the ice then he would've taken a stand by now. We're shedding cap like crazy and we all believe it's for a big move, but Ottawa and Arizona operate under their own self-imposed caps to self-sabotaging ends. I'd love it if he sold; he makes a billion dollars since his initial acquisition of the Canadiens and we get an owner who cares about managerial competence and on-ice success.

See how people can have different opinions on events.

What do you think of Gallagher’s behaviour during & after the Nashville game?

    Captaincy worthy or childish?

I thought it was childish. And it made Gallagher look like the club's yes man. I don't need my respected leader talking trash about a well-liked personality throughout the city.

I guess I should preface that by saying it's what a rational team would do...there's a non-zero chance they think Lindgren can't be the starter while Price is injured because he's too young or whatever.

If Price isn't back and playing better by Christmas, Charlie can have his job for the next 8 years as far as I'm concerned.

Bergevin would be upset if Shaw was demoted. He's won a cup, has grit and takes stupid penalties! Doesn't every team have a player like that in the top 6?

Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Dustin Brown.

Two of those guys deserve to be playing there right now, though.

  11. Another guy I'd do the AG+ for is Leddy. The only thing is that it would create a huge hole in their defence and they might not be okay with losing him for futures even though they're not sniffing the Cup this year.

    Galchenyuk+Juulsen - Leddy?

    Galchenyuk+Alzner(50% Retained)+Juulsen - Leddy+Ladd+4th?
