  1. I do like a lot of what ive seen from him. My biggest concern is that - and this is purely based on what ive seen vs. what he's said - it appears as if he caves to pressure from MB. Now, some of that may be based on inexperience and being thrown into a bad situation last year so im 100% willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I actually think this team will be a lot better than many people think. Yes, we've got concerns at centre and on defense but I think they will work themselves out. And I think a lot of that starts with DD & his play/system.
  2. Speaking of Poehling, on a somewhat unrelated note, He, Evans and Suzuki were hanging out at Petry's place on the weekend. This could simply be that Poehling & Evans are friends from Laval or whatever but its not insignificant that 3 established NHLers are hanging with a guy who spent all last year in the minors. I do feel like one of the centre positions is, on paper, his to lose.
  3. Id definitely offer Niku a PTO to see what he could do. I wouldnt be surprised if a different team offered him a contact TBH. He's a great skater and good passer. He's small thoug (well, skinny, i think he's over 6' but really easily knocked off the puck). Not sure MB & co would go for that.
  4. I think the hope is that Josh Brook or Wideman will take the 3rd spot behind Petry and Savard. That means we need a body in Laval. I dont think there's much more to this signing than that.
  5. Who exactly? This team has long lacked top end talent but one thing they do have is depth. Our 4th line is full of players that would play way further up most NHL team's lineups. We can complain about Dhiarot/Edmundson/Savard as not being top pairing dmen but they are top 6 on every team in this league. Its a complete false argument to suggest 1/3 of our team is not NHL caliber. The problem we have is the top end, not the bottom.
  6. Will definitely limit his role. Unvaccinated players most likely wont be able to travel across borders so that would limit him to Canada only games. Also, considering we had 2 separate covid related issues last year (Armia and DD) with the latter coming after he was vaccinated, I could see the team saying "you cant play" unless he gets the jab. A shame because i think there was an opportunity there for him.
  7. Ok but what if you've got an RFA who is asking for too much money? It happens all the time - players go all the way to arbitration. I have no idea what JK's camp was looking for but what if he wouldnt accept less than $4.5m You cant be forced into taking a deal that doesnt make sense and you cant expect an OS like that crazy thing Carolina dropped.
  8. I would agree with that. IMHo the team looks at it like: Petry Edmundson Chiarot Savard Romanov Kulak Wideman This could of course change at training camp (And I personally dont rank them quite like that) and of course guys like Brook or Norlinder or even Guhle (who apparently is having a strong rookie camp) could change some minds...
  9. Agree. I knew he was a great player obviously but what really surprised/shocked me (in the playoffs especially) was just how good he is overall. I was thinking we were getting a mike cammaleri type shooter - and he is - but man he's so much more than that. Teams shied away from him for his size but otherwise, this guy is a legit top 3 pick. He's that mature already. He's got incredible vision - its not just his shot he is going to be an offensive force with his passing and i was amazed at how good his defensive positioning is already.
  10. Wideman is a more complete defensman than Gus from what ive seen but i agree, he's likely right at the bottom of our depth chart for Dmen. They most likely wont hesitate to put him on waivers if need be and they likely wouldnt stress too much if he was claimed. It will be interesting to see how he does at camp. At 30 (or whatever he is) he isnt likely to get a lot better but it will be interesting to see how his KHL stats translate into the NHL. I think he might end up on our opening night roster but i sure hope he's supplanted by Brook. No offense to him, but Brook is the guy with the long term potential.
  11. This is an important point. By all accounts that was an OS worth roughly 3x what every GM in the league thinks JK is worth. I understand why/how Carolina did it and it may well work for them (if they then follow this up with a long term deal with a much lower cap hit) but its quite possible JK wouldnt extend the same offer to the habs if he was upset & that means what, qualifying offer at $5.1-6.1m? MB would have to (legitimately) worry about whether JK would accept the same (next) deal to stay with us and if he didn't live up to that $6.1m deal (how could he at this stage) what sort of affect would the fans have on him & his development? If people were getting fed up at $900k... can you imagine the bell centre with him making $6.1m? Had someone come in with a legit offer like $3m he would have matched as you mentioned. Even $4m x multi year, he takes that but $6.1? It was an unexpected offer. Im not MB fan but that's an offer that no one could have legitimately planned for & we have no idea what Kotkaniemi's camp was looking for in a bridge deal so you cant really say "he should have signed him before it came to that"
  12. Agree. There may not have been a space for Poehling to really get the ice time and linemates so maybe this will end up being a blessing... if he can perform. I actually think he's going to struggle this year. I still believe he has the potential to break out but i dont think it will be this year.
  13. Its all good it was just funny because it was loading slow on my computer so i was like "wait, what? "
  14. Lol, Did you mean to post ALL of Marc-Andre Perreault's tweets?
  15. More curious info on JD. He is apparently now NOT giving the big 1 on 1 interview with Chantal Machabee. Someone on twitter asked her if there was a connection between the cancelled interview (its been removed from RDS's schedule) and a possible trade, she said "No link, i will explain the situation soon." So thats 2 or 3 fairly reputable media sources saying something is "up" with Drouin one way or another... some speculate there's a trade, others say no. He was skating (Today I think?) but its definitely odd....
  16. If there are concerns, id be trying to use him as part of a package deal in a trade. Alone, he wont bring much, but he could add substantial value to a team that trades us, say, a young puck moving defensman as he would be a bit of insurance for them. I really like Harris but only the team knows if he's a flight risk. Its possible he just really wants to finish his schooling. Some guys do.
  17. Agree. Edmundson - Petry is basically a 100%. I am almost positive they try Chiarot Savard together which is a big mistake him. Im hopeful they will mix & match. Wideman is still a wildcard imho. Really curious what he brings. Positionally, Brook probably has the best chance. I think the team sees Edmundson, Chiarot and Romanov as locks on LD. They see Petry and Savard as locks on RD but there's a position there for either Wideman, Brook or someone playing their off side. I think they would make room for Norlinder (unfortunately at the expense of Romanov most likely) if he absolutely blew them away but that would be unlikely at this point.
  18. Very very odd. The announced press conference on the 20th too... certainly feels like something is brewing but who knows what. Im not sure id call it one of our worst off seasons TBH. Obviously there were some big changes but there were also big additions in Hoffman, Dvorak and Savard. Lots of the usual tinkering (Paquettte, Perreault, Wideman) but some of those guys we lost were depth players too. I think we once again failed to address our biggest need (Impact Defense - not just bodies on defense) but Im not convinced we're worse than we were last season, we're just likely not better unless guys like Suzuki, CC, Romanov take big strides or someone else (Brook, Norlinder etc) surprises at camp.
  19. Yes and no. Price was fantastic, no question, but in the playoffs, our slow, lumbering defense was more effective because of the box out. They surrendered a lot of shots (that price stopped) but they also kept the lanes open so he could see pucks & basically changed the type of shots he was facing. I think that some combination of Edmundson/Chiarot/Savard can do this effectively too, in the post season, but not during the regular games. I think the bolded part is most important. I wouldnt be surprised at all if one of the guys you listed does, in fact, "step up" but will they get a chance? Lets say Brook comes in & is awesome - as good as we ever hoped - then he should logically slot into the 2nd pair, behind petry, but would DD play him ahead of Savard? We all know that Savard-Chiarot is not a great pairing on paper becaues neither are puck movers... but the coaching staff will likely still play them as our second pair. So while I actually think our D Corps is not as bad as it might seem, im not sure we will use it as effectively as we can or should.
  20. Pretty sure he signed with the Blues this AM.
  21. Not trying to start an argument, genuinely interested since i dont really look at advanced stats as much as a lot of guys - were his AS really good the last 2 years? I know they were terrific in year one (he was very sheltered then) but i think the last 2 years they tapered off? but maybe im totally wrong on this one...
  22. Ex Hab and Ex AHL coach Sylvain Lefevre - who was an assistant with Columbus - was fired because he refused to get a covid vaccine. Oh, Sylvain. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/sylvain-lefebvre-fired-blue-jackets-vaccine-1.6173870
  23. We're in an interesting position with Edmundson, Chiarot and Savard being very similar players (same salaries even). They are all quality NHLers but we need someone other than Petry to move the puck. One of those guys, packaged with one of our excess wingers would possibly do that. Dont know if MB would consider it but there's defintiely some assets there. I would bet you could get Dunn from Seattle for a combination, they kraken may even throw in a prospect or pick.
  24. Further Ettedgui's comments, he believes the opening night lineup will look like this: Tyler Toffoli - Nick Suzuki - Cole Caufield Mike Hoffman - Christian Dvorak - Josh Anderson Artturi Lehkonen - Jake Evans - Brendan Gallagher Mathieu Perreault - Ryan Poehling - Joel Armia With Drouin not playing (Traded or out indefinitely) Ettedgui believes they want Lehkonen playing on the 4th line, they would sign AG27 to play LW, 3rd line and move Perreault to the 4th line. Not sure i buy it but i at least can see his reasoning. I cant see Perreault and Pacquette both being signed & then not on the roster.
  25. Galchenyuk would surprise me because i dont think he left on the best terms. That said, I dont think he has issues with any of the players (I think he and Gallagher are still close) which is more important than issues with the GM. Subban, for example, might be quite useful for us (if salary is retained) but there's no way they bring him back with him and Gally being clearly not fans of each other. I also believe we have way too many forwards and not enough (quality) defensmen. While i think some combination of this defense corps may be ok in the playoffs (especially with "playoff price") Im not sure they are good enough (especially based on how i think they will be deployed) to get us to the playoffs. Ive been wondering about this for some time. Im just not sure if he has any value in a trade (or whether Ettedgui is saying he wont be playing at all). If its anxiety or performance related stress I could see MB sticking with him but if its substance abuse or something I wouldnt be surprised at all if MB is shopping him, just no idea what you could get for him seeing as Seattle just passed him up for free.
