On opening day, a Giants fan was beaten in the parking lot by two Dodgers fans and is in still in critical condition in a medically induced coma. This is has always been a heated rivalry. Today, two reporters blamed Dodgers owner Frank LaCourt for his indifference to fans' complaints about deteriorating conditions at Dodger Stadium, especially increasing fans' misconduct. LaCourt was painted as being indifferent to this beating. How much truth is there to LaCourt being to blame for this?

Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell received a two week suspension for homophobic slurs and threatening a fan with a baseball bat in front of his two sons and saying children don't belong at the ballpark. The fan in question appeared on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" saying McDowell should be banned from baseball in view of the fact players get 50 game suspensions for steroids.

Justin Verlander becomes the 30th pitcher with at least two no-hitters. I had switched to the game from the Kentucky Derby and didn't realize he might have a no-hitter going until the announcers mentioned he retired the first 22 batters before giving up a walk. The final out was also No.1 on ESPN's Top Ten plays.

Verlander goes 5 2/3 innings of no hit ball in an attempt to become the second pitcher to throw consecutive no-hitters before giving up an RBI triple in the sixth. Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati remains the only pitcher to accomplish this feat having no hit the Boston Braves on June 11, 1938 and the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 15, 1938.

Today, Detroit gets slaughtered by Boston 14-1 in a game shortened to eight innings and last night, Philadelphia beats Cincinnati 5-4 in 19 innings. Second baseman Wilson Valdez pitched a hitless and scoreless 19th inning to get the win making him the first player to win a game after starting at another position since Babe Ruth in 1921. He is also the 95th not to allow an earned run.

Yesterday for only the fourth time since moving to the West coast, the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame a five run deficit after seven innings or later by scoring five runs in the eight to eventualy send the game to extra innings. They would score four in the eleventh for an 11-8 win.
