Andreas Engqvist

This move really confirms the Habs stance on Maxwell... Eller's acquisition put him back a notch and DD and Engqvist have both jumped him in the pecking order. I think this spells the end of Maxwell here.

Been like this for years for poor Maxwell... Last time up, he looked much better than his previous call ups. May be the end of Maxwell with the Habs, he may have a chance with another team. He's small and doesn't seem to like the physical at the NHL level. This is the wrong team for him, put him on a team surrounded by bigger physical players and I believe he may have a chance.

Until we get rid of some of our small guys, Max doesn't stand a chance with the Habs.

6'1 is not chara but it's not exactly small... i agree with the rest of your comment though

This is a good opportunity for Engqvist, I hope he makes the most of it. I've never seen him play so I'm curious now. It will be strange to see a tall guy at centre on our team, providing that Martin does give him some minutes.

Andreas had a very good training camp IMO and if not for the aquisition of players like Halpern and Boyd may have made the team then... Played a good two-way game and was very good in the face-off circle. He has had time to adjust to the North-American game playing with the Dogs... it will be another step-up though to the NHL and the relevent speed of the game vs. the AHL. Still, I'm happy to see him get the chance.

This is the right move. With Pouliot and AK filling in for Pacioretty and Cammalleri in the top six, we need lower-line guys with a good two-way game. Engqvist looks to be able to play a strong defensive game without necessarily sacrificing offense. He's a big kid and a good forward prospect. Martin made the right choice IMO.

Exactly how good a prospect do you project him to be?

He was good enough for the Habs to sign him a year before he came over, that's not a customary signing. My guess is they signed him before his contract ran out with Djurgarden, while other teams were waiting for his contract to expire. He could become a regular on the Habs checking line and be a fill-in for the second line center if there are injuries, for the present time he's getting his feet wet with a little icetime in the NHL.

Agreed. It's always nice to see some size down the middle, even if it is in a bottom 6 capacity.

Agreed that it will be nice to get some size at center, although we're really not as small a team as many people think we are. I think it just seems that way because so many of our skilled players our tiny. But while we have our Gio's, DD's, and Gomez's, we also have guys like Eller (who can play center), Pouliot, Pacioretty, Moen, Darche, AK, and now Enqgvist and White... we have a decent number of bigger guys, we just lack bigger guys who play key roles. We don't have that big scoring power forward, we don't have the top 6 guy who stands in front of the net, and we don't have a big guy with a mean streak. But it's not purely a lack of size that hurts us. My feeling is that Engqvist is not going to be a guy with a mean streak either, but at least maybe he won't get pushed around the way some of the smaller guys do.

Sounds like a really sound defensive forward. The size should help handle big players as they do seem to have the ability to run over some of our smaller D around our net. I hope that Halpern is back soon. But maybe the truth is that our team could use Engqvist long term based on this call-up as a big strong defensive forward could make a huge difference against other big forwards like Malone, Carter, Lucic, Malkin who play for teams the eastern conference that Montreal will likely face in the playoffs. Montreal has not had a big defensive forward since Bonk. Bonk was able to play effectively against big power forwards, IMHO.

A bizarre move, in my opinion, if indeed we are tight against the number of recalls we can make the rest of the year and especially if Pleks or Darche might get back in soon. I don't know that Engqvist vs. Palushaj is going to have a big difference on our line-up, but we're burning bridges in terms of the number of recalls we have left.

Could Andreas be with the Habs come next season? His cost is high for a 4th liner at $900,000 so the numbers may handicap him.

How is he doing in the AHL playoffs?

I think he will likely be in the line up at the start of the year because of Ellers injury. Unless another centre like Trotter completely out plays him at camp. But with the size advantage over Trotter, I think we have Engqvist in a hab uniform for a while.
