Key penalties and an inability to run the ball in the second half prove to be decisive in a 25-21 loss to Arizona. Detroit had 232 yards at halftime and a 21-13 lead midway in the third quarter after a 66 yard interception by DeAndre Levy on a pass on which Carson Palmer threw into zone coverage thinking the Lions were in man-to-man. The offense would sputter in the second half after Reggie Bush went out with a sprained left knee getting only 90 yards on six second-half possessions.

The Lions were penalized 8 times for 101 yards. One key penalty was a defensive holding call which negated a turnover that would have given Detroit possession inside the Arizona 30 yard line. The Cardinals would convert that break into a field goal. Another key penalty came on Arizona's game-winning drive when Bill Bentley was called for pass interference in the end zone when he failed to turn around and look for the ball. Rashard Mendenhall would score two plays later. Detroit's final chance ended when Nate Burleson was tackled short of the first down marker on fourth and four.

Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson has had a suspension for an illegal hit on New Orleans running back Darren Sproles reduced to a $100,000 fine. Goldson also has a league high 15 personal foul penalties since 2010. And since he has now been fined $130,000 this season, Tampa Bay is expected to pay a $50,000 fine for violating the NFL's Club Remittance policy. The league is allowed to assess a fine if a player is fined at least $105,000 during the same season.

Cleveland has traded running back Trent Richardson to Indianapolis for a first round pick in next year's draft. In 2011, Cleveland traded three picks to select Richardson third overall and gain 950 yards as a rookie last season. But it turns out he hasn't been healthy consistently and lacks the explosiveness Browns' new regime has been looking for and doesn't necessarliy fit the scheme. The first round pick gives Cleveland three in the first round and 10 overall.

There is word they are looking for a new quarterback since Brandon Weedon doesn't seem to be the answer in Cleveland and the team has been through 19 quarterbacks since reentering the league in 1999. They would be well advised to use their picks to rebuild the offensive front line which has difficulty protecting Weedon, who is prone to throwing into coverage.

Detroit is at Washington at 1:00 P.M. with a chance to end a 21 game road losing streak to the Redskins who have looked more like the Deadskins, a streak that started on November 26, 1939. Washington has so far shown an inability to stop or tackle anything, allowing a league high and ridiculous 511.5 yards a game through only two games. Also, Robert Griffin III has looked tentative since his return from knee surgery.

Detroit exploits a porous Washington defense for 441 total yards in a 27-20 for their first win over the Redskins in Washington and first since 1935 when that team was in Boston. Only 63 yards of that total came on the ground against a defense that entered the game with even more difficulty against the run which says something about Detroit's lack of depth at running back. Washington opened the scoring when Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was locked in on receiver Calvin Johnson and also threw behind him and that interception was returned 17 yards.

Stafford was able to exploit a nonexistent secondary on 25-for-42 passing for 385 yards and two touchdowns. Detroit also took advantage of an overturned Redskins touchdown and a Robert Griffin III fumble, but still have issues with discpline taking 8 penalties for 71 yards. Griffin III looked more like the player of last year with 32 of 50 for a 326 yards.

Detroit receiver Nate Burleson broke his arm in two places in a single car accident when he hit the center median after being distracted by an item falling off the front seat. The item was a pizza. He will have surgery Wednesday and so far, there are no plans to put Burleson on injured reserve. As their No. 2 receiver, Burleson had just scorched the Washington secondary for six catches for 116 yards. Detroit will now be Brian Royles, who has had knee problems, to step into the No. 2 role.

Detroit plays Chicago at Ford Field today at 1:00 P.M. Detroit will be without Nate Burleson who is out indefinitely with a broken arm but will have Reggie Bush back in the lineup. Both teams with be without a key player on their defensive lines. Chicago tackle Henry Melton and Detroit defensive end Jason Jones are lost for the season with knee injuries. The Bears will start Nate Collins and Detroit will rotate Ezekiel Ansah, Devin Taylor, and Israel Idonije.

Detroit is still a slight favorite.

Detroit takes advantage of four turnovers by Jake Cutler and dominates Chicago's defensive front line in a 40-32 win over the Bears. Cutler threw three interceptions, one coming after a costly penalty that would have given the Bears a first down. Detroit converted that into a field goal. Nick Fairley run in a fumble from four yards out. That would be needed by the Lions since they played a little loose in the fourth quarter. There's already the issue of a weak pass defense. Detroit also missed scoring chances and had to settle for field goals. The Lions got three sacks against Cutler for 31 yards in losses.

Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer will miss the remainder of the season with an ACL tear in his right knee that occurred in a scramble in the first quarter against Buffalo. It's a major blow for Hoyer who releases the ball quickly and is considered calmer in the pocket than starter Brandon Weedon.

Detroit plays at Green Bay at 1:00 P.M. where the Lions have not won since December 16, 1991 for a total of 22 straight home wins. The 21 straight regular season homes are an NFL record. Green Bay is displaying a reemerging running game with 100 yards rusher in consecutive games, something they didn't have for nearly three years. Aaron Rodgers will certainly give the Lions problems as this will be their first test against a top quarterback. An upside for Detroit is Green Bay has one of the worst defenses in the league. Another is they have forced 11 turnovers and have so allowed a league best 21% conversion rate on third down.

Big plays, penalties, and the absence of top receiver Calvin Johnson, who was out with a sore knee, give Green Bay a 22-9 win over Detroit. Johnson's loss allowed the Packers to key on Reggie Bush who was held to 44 yards on 13 carries and to limit the Lions to short and intermediate throws. The Packers also got five sacks against Matthew Stafford. Defense kept the Lions in the game as they were able to force Green Bay into settling for field goals as Mason Crosby kicked five field goals, one of which was set up by a 67 yard run. The lone touchdown for Green Bay was scored on a 83 yard pass from Aaron Rogers to Jacoby Jones.

San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith's career has taken at least another setback as he has been arrested for possession of illegal assault weapons according to Santa Clara County prosecutors. The arrest stems from a June 29, 2012 party at Smith's home in which two men claimed they were shot by "an unknown guest." A lawsuit against Smith has resulted. It was during this investigation that the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office found multiple assault weapons, three of which were deemed illegal. The 49ers' front office has stated they are aware of the new charges and are monitoring the situation closely.
