Matthew Stafford exploits the New York Jets secondary for 360 yards and two touchdowns on 24-for-34 passing in a 24-17 win. Jeremy Ross got Detroit's first score when he got behind safety Antonio Allen who then missed a tackle for 59 yards to give the Lions a 10-3 lead. The other touchdown pass went to Eric Ebon for 16 yards. Stafford ran for the other touchdown on a 1 yard run capping off a 90 yard 14 play drive that saw two critical third down conversions.

Detroit, however, would have some difficulty getting off the field allowing 7/15 on third down conversions and were a bit soft in the fourth quarter. Only two turnovers by Jets quarterback Geno Smith kept the game from becoming a complete meltdown, one on a interception in which Smith overthrew his intended receiver and a fumble by Smith in which a linebacker got around the Jets' left tackle.

Oakland has fired Dennis Allen as head coach and named Tony Sparano interim coach. Sparano inherits a talent deficient team that is last in the league in four offensive categories - total offense at 270 yards per game, 5.7 yards per attempt, and 61.5 yards rushing per game, and first downs at 16.0 per game.

Denver has released kicker Matt Prater as a result of his four game suspension in favor of rookie Brandon McManus. McManus has made all of his field goal and extra point attempts. So it means Denver didn't want to risk losing McManus if Prater were to run afoul of the league's substance abuse policy again.

Failure to finish off drives proves decisive in a 17-14 loss to Minnesota. Three of those drives resulted in missed field goals Alex Henery hitting the right upright on a 44 yard attempt, shanking a 47 yard try, and badly hooking a potential game winning 50 yard attempt. Henery is now heading for the unemployment line. Detroit's offense was largely held in check with 263 yards total offense, only 69 yards rushing. The Lions also allowed big plays at critical moments. Two of them came after Buffalo had been flagged for consecutive holding penalties setting back to their own 39. A 21 yard pass play put the Bills back in business and that would result in Buffalo's first field goal. A 20 yard play set up Dan Carpenter's game winning 58 yard field goal. Detroit has been on the losing end of three of the longest game winners in NFL history according to STATS.

Detroit also had difficulty keeping Matthew Stafford upright as he was sacked six times for 27 yards in losses.

Detroit shuts down Minnesota limiting the Vikings to 212 total yards offense in a 17-3 win. Minnesota's front line would have difficulty keeping rookie quarterback Terry Bridgewater upright as Detroit's front line was repeatedly able to collapse the pocket and forcing Bridgewater into three interceptions, two on tipped passes. The first was thrown into coverage in the end zone on Minnesota's first drive, a ball that was underthrown and Bridgewater didn't see the cornerback undercutting the pass route. The Lions' field goal kicking remains a problem as Matt Prater was 1-for-3 with both misses wide left.

Seattle has traded injury prone receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick. Harvin has played in only 43 games since being drafted by Minnesota in 2009 and only one game for Seattle last season because of hip surgery. Harvin has had anger management issues since entering the league and has struggled to get open on Seattle's pass schemes. The trade was first reported by Fox Sports.

Detroit hosts New Orelans today at 1:00 P.M. This will be the biggest test for the Lions' defense which is ranked first against the pass and second against the run. New Orleans is ranked second in total offense with a much improved running attack. The Saints, however, have issues on defense having surrendered an average 380 yards a game and it has not stepped up when it has mattered most in surrendering late leads on the road against Cleveland and Atlanta. Detroit still has issues in its kicking as newly signed signed Matt Prater converted one of three field goal attempts last week.

Big plays, key penalties, and mind boggling play calling by the Saints allow Detroit to score twice in the final five minutes to pull out a 24-23 win over New Orleans. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was 27-for-40 for 285 yards and two interceptions which resulted in 10 points by the Saints. Stafford was off target on some throws and that stalled a few drives and did not hit receivers in stride often enough. His first interception was thrown into coverage and gave New Orleans the ball at the Detroit 29 and that resulted in a 13 yard touchdown pass. His second occurred in the red zone and was a mistimed pass that was tipped by a Lions receiver into the hands of Kenny Vaccarro and that was converted into a field goal.

Detroit's first score was a 21 yard field that Matt Prater banked off the left upright and came a pass interference penalty that should have been called defensive holding. With the score 23-10 New Orleans, Detroit receiver Golden Tate took a routine pass on third and 14, escaped a missed tackle and outran two Saints defenders for a 73 yard touchdown. With 3:38 remaining and needing to run the ball to run down the clock, the Saints went to the pass. Why throw the ball in the closing minutes? After two earlier incompletions, Drew Brees threw late and down the middle on third and nine and did not see the safety who picked off the pass to put Detroit in business at the Saints 14. A pass interference penalty against Rafael Bush gave the Lions a new set of downs at the five and Stafford threw to Corey Fuller in the back of the end zone for the winning score.
