Don Cherry

212 posts in this topic

On Coaches corner tonight....Don says habs will be good again next season....was asked by many how the team will do next season.

But,says Cammy is the only top scorer we have...its a must to pick up another goal scorer like Cammy.

Gorges/Markov will be back.....and made a prediction regarding Gomez, says he will have a dynamite yr next season.

I actually agree with that assessment.

Like I said in another thread... We were lucky this season. Despite our top line struggles and injuries (long term to key players), we managed to stay competitive. But I wouldn't push our luck, saying they can do it again next season. We need someone who can take some of the pressure off Cammy. Gio's doing his part on the gomez line, but to expect him to score more than 25 goals a season is unrealistic imo.

I've always liked him, whether I agree with him or not. I think he's got heart, and an opinion. I see alot of people here with opinions too, many of which I don't agree with. So are you all <edit> because your opinion is different than mine? He's a TV personality, and one with a long track record in hockey. He knows what he knows, and says what he thinks, from personal experience and working himself up through the trenches of the AHL to the NHL as a player, then as a coach. He's entitled to his opinions, and he's worked for it, in my opinion. I read his book "Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff". So what - he's no Shakespeare, but it's impressive, in my view, to see what he went through to get to where he is now.

I also met the guy two seasons ago in the Boston Gardens. My brother-in-law who works for an investment firm got box tickets from some fund company and invited me, knowing I was a Leafs fan. It was Boston-Toronto. I wore my Leafs jersey. He was doing a "Coaches Corner" type show between periods, for NESN, with Milbury, and the booth was on the same level as our box seats. I wandered over there to watch, and he sees me standing there in a sea of Black and Gold, wearing Blue and White, and he nods his head and says "taking your life into your own hands, are ya there buddy?". I start laughing, he comes over and we chat for like 7 or 8 minutes until the makeup girl says she needs him.

Very cool, very down to earth. I got a cell phone snap of us together and he signed my Leafs jersey.

People are allowed to have their own opinions. But keep in mind that just as we see Don Cherry in one light, you see him in a complete other light because you are a Leafs fan and Don Cherry likes and supports your team. No matter what happens, Cherry ardently defends his Bruins and his Leafs and his views are biased in these teams' favor. My personal issue with him is that he's not a radio personality airing his own views; he's a staple on a national broadcast for a national, publicly-funded network. And in that situation, he needs to be able to reflect a point of view that reflects that of Canadians and not just those living in Toronto. You can't have someone being paid from tax-payers' money going out bashing the Senators and Canadiens and talking about his dislike for Europeans and supporting violence in hockey. And so while I do agree that he is entitled to his own opinion, the forum for him to be expressing that opinion is inappropriate when he does things that are offensive, racist, or potentially influencing young hockey players in a dangerous manner.

I second this. He should be as neutral as possible considering it is a national broadcast. But ultimately, CBC isn't stupid. They know that Leafs fans are the majority of their viewers and thus cater to them in a sickening, almost TSN-esque manner.

Regardless, he should be on MSG or Leafs-TV if he wants to flout his agenda about. Why should my tax dollars pay for a loud mouthed biased braggart that I don't agree with in the slightest? It's baffling.

Well at least we won't have to listen to PM during TSN hockey telecasts anymore as he is 80% moving to the US networks.

Canadian hockey fans will be seeing a lot less of Pierre McGuire in the future.

The ubiquitous hockey analyst, who has been dividing his time between Canada and the United States since NBC regained the U.S. rights for National Hockey League games in 2006, has decided to concentrate on his duties south of the border.

"It's a chance to spend more time with my family," said the 50-year-old McGuire, who has an 11-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. "I'll be doing two games a week for Versus or NBC, and spend one night in the Versus studio."

McGuire, his wife Melanie and the kids will move in August from Montreal to New Canaan, Conn., which is a hop, step and a jump from the Versus studios in Stamford, Conn.

McGuire said he will continue to appear on TSN's network of radio stations across Canada.

Agreed. When he says the right thing its nice, but his undying love for Boston and Toronto sicken me.

I agree,,,they might not get the ratings for CC, but he REALLY" has to go. There must be a former player out there that is more up-to-date. Perhaps someone "like" Jeremy Roenick. Someone who can speak his mind and still be objective.

Agreed. And it doesn't even HAVE to be a former player. Give the spot to someone like Elliot Friedman. I read his stuff for CBC.ca and he seems to a)have a very level head and b)bring up very interesting points and opinions instead of just rehashing the same stuff that everyone else is saying.

In any case, you can't do much worse than Don. I'm not someone who generally gets offended very easily, so I don't mind watching him and can just tune out the stupid things whenever he comes out with them. At the same time, he gets paid a HUGE amount of money from our public broadcaster to do what he does, and that's where I see a problem with giving him a soapbox for some of his bigoted views. Put him on TSN and I wouldn't really care.

But really, that's kind of the conundrum the CBC (TV especially) finds itself in in general. They're mandated to provide a certain type of national content, but they're not given enough money to properly do it. As a result they go with whatever brings the ratings, Cherry included, to try and compete with commercial stations that have no such mandate - and end up making their own programming the worse for it. It's a viscious cycle.

Wow really?!?!....thanks god I was watching RDS. I probably would have broke my tv upon hearing that. Then again I wouldn't have been watching him in the first place.

Simple solution guys/gals. Do like me and dont listen to the guy at all. No idea what garbage he tossed last night and not interested in knowing either. If enough people tune him out then he'll be gone soon enough and hopefully replaced by someone who has a clue.

1) Saying when someone doesn't turn around he meant to do the hit, Chara doesn't turn around but its Geoff Molsons fault. Disgusting.

2) Calling ex-fighters hypocrites and cowards, disgusting.

Also was it not him who criticized players for hitting from behind into the boards? But a guy gets suspended big time for it and all of the sudden hes on the other side?

Hopefully this is the tipping point which will spare my television from ever being darkened by Cherry's repulsive visage again.
