On a site today,,,,there was a pic of Pleks in his uniform. The pic showed each one of the advertisements,,,,and there were around 20 of them  , not including his name, number, team etc.

Was it Pleki or rather Pacioretty? Kladno's uniforms have a bit of advertisement on them but they're not too bad compared to the Swiss league's.

Pacioretty: http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/pacioretty.html#tl-733520a1

I think it's horrible, I don't like the look of jersey's with sponsor logo's on them. They're already plastering the boards and the ice, don't need to make the players into mobile billboards.

I understand, advertising keeps the league and the teams afloat, but still for me, it takes away from the jersey's. Some jersey's are really nice, cluttering it up with advertisements takes away from the esthetics of the jersey, the colour and team logo.I really hope we don't see that here in North America.

I was watching a bit of the marlies game and even they have too many logos on the ice IMO, and a small logo on helmets which I'm not a fan of. Watching the 1979 Habs/bruins game last night, now that's more like it lol

Exactly!

Was kind of odd seeing white boards. I grew up watching hockey in the late 70's, but mostly in the 80's. I never got use to the boards covered with advertisements. I don't mind the 75th anniversary or the 100th anniversary that the habs had on their shoulders. Or a number on the upper chest/shoulder some teams have to honour a player who has died, but leave the advertising to billboards please.

Well, ya know with the Laffs organization it's all about the $$$. <_<

This has been an ongoing debate in the NHL. I don't know if they honestly considered it or if it was just a passing thought. Gary and his greediness I wouldn't be surprised if it was his idea. <_<

Could've been brought up during the last lockout, but it isn't the first time I heard mention of advertising on jerseys.

Ya I'm aware that they need to make money but I'd rather them take a stand and say for example, were going to have a maximum of 4 ice advertisements and you will have to pay X amount of dollars if you want one, instead of washing it down and having 12 different ones for the same total income. A lot of companies couldn't afford it, but some can and will because they would stand out that much more.

The laffs it's always about the money. <_<

Wonder what they would've done in the 70's when players didn't wear helmets. If it was during the ballard years he probably would've shaved logo's into their hair. It would've been in their contracts as well.

20 years later and we're still talking about Ballard. Laffs haven't been the same since he ran them into the ground. Ballard never cared about the team, he knew he'd fill maple leafs garden regardless of how they played.

It sounds foreign and and upsetting initially but if they did it people would get used to it, especially those young people who grow up with it. Like I grew up with ads on the boards and when I watch a classic game with the all white boards, they strike me as very odd.

I do understand in sports culture the jersey means quite a bit more so there would be a lot of resistance but I'd be surprised if many people actually followed through and stopped watching because of it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Would people be as upset if the jerseys were untouched but the pants had some kind of ad? Maybe pants/helmet or 1 or the other and the actual jersey remains untouched. Could be a happy compromise.

The NBA is most likely to have advertising starting next season. A small ad on the players chest around where the "C" is on a hockey jersey. It won't take long for the other N.A. leagues to follow suit. There is a ton of money in it.

I am a traditionalist,,,,1st it was the board adverts,,,,and that ticked me off,,,,,,then came the on-ice adverts,,,,and that ticked me off,,,,and now I know that adverts on the uniforms is coming, and that will tick me off. The naming of the arenas is bad also.

It's bad enough that "this puck drop is brought to you by,,,," or "this replay",,,,,,,or the "net-cam",,,etc.,,,etc.,,,etc.

I know it's coming (the uniform adverts), and it won't be long (8-10 years maybe) before the POs will have a sponsor as well "This 1/4 final round of the Eastern Conference POs. brought to you by". The ice in the defensive zone is up for grabs as well for adverts,,,,,,adverts on the seats maybe?

Advertising rakes in BIG bucks, and we all know that the owners LOVE money.

I'm like you on that front... I can deal with the boards-but really miss the white boards, especially after watching some of the old games CBC is airing on Saturdays-the ice having a chevy logo in it, the arena name, etc... But for the love of hockey, please leave the uni's alone!

Look at some of the Euro leagues that have advertising on the jerseys. Some are so cluttered it's hard to make out the teams logo. I think hockey uniforms are some of the nicest in all of professional-team-sports. It's one of the only one I can think of that has full sleeves. Basketball is basically a tanktop, football has short sleeves, so does baseball and soccer. There's so much to a hockey uniform, the jersey, the shorts, the socks, gloves, etc... I really think they'd be doing a disservice to those who created the uniforms by cluttering them up with sponsor logos. Put a sponsors logo on every pillar in the arena, every escalator, outside window, but leave the uniforms alone please-they're perfect the way they are.

If that's the case, I'm buying a few jerseys now. This way I can show my children and grandchildren how beautiful the old hockey jerseys were. Before corporate sponsoring came in and ruined it all.

Football/Soccer has full sleeves, as does rugby union, its just optional

I don't mind at all if there's no sponsor's on the jersey's EHW said he was european so he's used to it.. well hockey has been around in Canada forever and never have there been sponsors in the NHL jersey's.. i couldn't stand it if the NHL allowed them to put sponsors on the jersey's.. pants are fine but it would look dumb on the helmets too.

Exactly Kinot 1,I still think of the days of the Montreal Forum and Danny Gallivan,"Good Evening everyone live from the Montreal Forum".If they start ruining the uniforms like the "Glowing Puck Era" somethings should retain their original beauty and besmirching the Hallowed Logo on the Habs jersey's with ads is like defacing the "Mona Lisa" in my world.
