We've been getting killed on draws so far this season. Like, seriously owned each night. I don't know who among our myriad assistant coaches is in charge of face-offs but it feels like all our centers have gotten substantially worse at draws this season.

I don't think we were overly fantastic last season either. We also don't have a go-to right-handed face-off specialist. We've had guys like Perreault, Koivu, Metropolit, Halpern, etc. in past years, who have done a very good job on draws. But frankly, I don't know that we have the horses to win them now. It's been more than one coach who's tried to get these guys going on face-offs and not even one center has been that great.

The team is pretty small up-the-middle too; while not the "be-all, end-all", size and leverage can help play into things, especially during scrambled face-offs.

Also, we just shouldn't get penalties. Ever again. Nothing good ever comes of it.

We have no choice. When we get the lead, the NHL will call penalties against us to even things up. When we're behind, the NHL will call penalties against us to keep us behind.

I don't care about a couple of 3 game winning streaks, these are 2 pretty bad - mediocre hockey teams playing mediocre level hockey.

If not for three goals, that would have been a boring period. I'd agree, these are two teams probably playing above their heads right now that would have difficulty keep up the play over the course of a season.

Which would make sense, except that plenty of smaller players are excellent face-off men too. I understand how a guy like DD will lose out on strength battles, but a lot about face-offs is timing and angles.

We need to enjoy while it lasts. We didn't see too many stretches like this last year.

Are we a legit Cup contender? No. But this is a short season, and winning 3-4 games in a row on a handful of occasions can be enough to propel a team towards the playoffs, especially since all these games are "4-point games." If we can beat Was, NJ, and Fla, I'd be inclined to believe we can at least play with teams like Tor, Ott, TB, NYI, Buf, Car, and Wpg. And that right there means we have what it takes to make the playoffs. One stretch of games doesn't make a season, but while we're not overly great, I don't see a lot of those other teams being that dominant either.

I hear ya. How do you think I felt cheering for both of these teams? I had about three weeks of happiness in December.

I would have killed for 3 weeks of happiness last year. This place was damn right depressing.

Decreasing the sample definitely increases the odds of something weird happening but I'd say it would be somewhat surprising if either team was a playoff team right now.

This is how I feel as well. Short seasons are flukey and strange. I don't think it's unreasonable or too homerish to think we might be able to squeak into the playoffs. I also don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility for the team to collapse and shatter into a million pieces like Toronto did last season. For the time being, I'll enjoy the modicum of success we're having and watch our young players develop. Seeing two young Habs players compete at the NHL level like this is something I haven't really seen in my adult life. So, playoffs or not, I can't complain. :D
