Obviously line mates and ice time is important for most players but for a guy like Bourque its hugely important. As bad as he's looked for stretches, I dont actually think its been due to lack of effort most of the time. I am hoping he gets off to a strong start this year & can get back to a 20-25+ goal season again.

I agree he never looks lazy to me,just unlucky,he started last season well twice he scored on PKs stretch passes, but nothing went in for him after that,he would look good holding the cup really high.

Which Rene will we see this time around? The guy who couldnt find the back of the net for strecthes or the guy who looked like a man on a mission during the play offs?

Tell him the playoffs start on Oct 8th.

I think there will always be stretches, with him, where he gets lost but I do expect a better regular season from him this year.

oh for sure. All players have those stretches where nothing seems to go right . Pleks has one a year it seems. If Borque could replicate even his 40 point season with the Flames here I would be content.

I am, unfortunately, totally expecting a return to "form." I think his post-season was the obvious anomaly and we'll get the Rene Bourque who finds himself in the pressbox after about 10-15 games into the season.

I think he just needs ice time. I feel like every time he's been put in more of a scoring role he produces. If they commit to playing him on the second line for 15 games or so, I think he will surprise many of us

being as objective as i can be, i dont rank bourques tenure here as such a failure.

first season with us he had a stomach issue that required surgery in the offseason.

second season he was playing very well and producing on a line with plek and gionta, then had concussion and injury problems for most of the year , came back and had a very good playoffs against ottawa

last season reg season was admittedly horrible, but bounced back with a huge playoffs.

so in conclusion thats 2 good playoff showings, 1 good re season showing, unfortunately a short one, and one horrible reg season showing.

i dont mind him being on our 3rd line at all, he can contribute where he is, play top 6 in a pinch and he can be replaced by bournival easily enough if he decided to start mailing it in.

I tend to agree. I think that the line of Sekac-Eller-Bourque, should they stay together, may well be very surprising this year.

i think even if the offense isnt huge from him he can still contribute defensively and physically on a shut down line with plekanec, and still chip in with a goal here and there. thats where i would have started him but either way im expecting him to contribute, theres no reason he cant

Agreed, which is why i still think Sekac-Plekanec-Bourque and Gally-Eller-Gally makes a lot more sense than what MT is apparently planning to start the year (bourque-Eller-sekac, gally-plekanec-gally).

But either way, i think both lines can be effective.

I completely agree with you. I think most people do. I think its a matter of not being able to put Pleks on the third line but he's getting older and I think there is better chemistry on that line (I mean on-ice chemistry).

Pleks will be up against top scoring lnes, more often than not. Montreal braintrust would like to see Galchenyuk develop a two-way centre's game. Pleks is the best one on the Habs to learn from. Ergo, Therrien has Galchenyuk starting the season at wing with Pleks, getting major minutes while skating alongside and watching a master two-way centre at work. It also allows Galchenyuk to work on his offensive magic, knowing he has two defensively responsible linemates covering, when he does have a solo-go.

That's what I am seeing, and it all makes sense to me.

Don't understand why some people still want to get rid of Bourque  ? This is a BIG guy with SKILLS to boot B) . He can out-muscle defenders and shove his way through.

He just needs more consistency and probably more TLC from the coaches to bring out his best. Give him more time to gel with Sekac. Eller is looking more and more like the weakest link on that line.

Don't ever trade him, unless in exchange for a Malkin/Crosby type.

He's been playing quite well, and could easily have 3 goals thus far if the puck was over by an inch. Solid play on a line which may surprise...

It would be advantageous for him to score a few soon, though, if only for positive reinforcement.

So far, he's actually been playing a lot better than the stats indicate. I feel like a goal in the next game or 2 and that 3d line is going to light things up. But if they dont score soon, I can see all of them tightening their sticks and making things much worse if they are not careful...

That's what I'd worry about, too. Stats are always more magnified at the start of the year. If a player hits a cold streak and goes 5 games without a point in February chances are that nobody will even notice the anomoly. When the same thing happens in the first 5 games of the season it's seen as a huge disaster.

Well... I have defended Rene often enough... but I'm beginning to wonder if the Habs have a better option going forward.

9 game played. 0 goals, 1 assist. :( I had a feeling the playoff "burst" was just an anomaly.

Yeah, its like if he doesnt get on a hot streak he's just completely invisible. Even things he's doing well right now (ie playing the body) he is doing in a way that has little impact (getting in the face of a forward at his blue line when play is near the net etc). Poor Lars looks lost because he has no one to back him up - last night in Edmonton Eller made 3 or 4 plays where if he had had a little support, we would have had major pressure but instead it was Lars against 3 oilers & voila, transition back to our end.

Id definitely consider sitting Bourque for Sekac or Bournival at this point. I suspect he'll be in tonight against his old team but if he doesnt score or at least come close, look for him to be a healthy scratch come thursday.

I think it would be more of a message if they did sit him against his old team. We have some hungry kids waiting in the wings. Maybe some press time will help get his motivation back up,, assuming he's able to work his way back into the lineup.
