^^ I think there's a lot of smoke about the Habs being very interested in Stamkos, so it's likely true. Big names like Dreger, Lebrun, McKenzie, etc. all suggesting we're in on him. However, those same sources suggest Detroit is the front-runner and that Toronto, Tampa, and Buffalo are all very much in as well. Again, the money will likely be comparable everywhere, so it's up to Bergevin to sell his vision and product. If I'm MB, I'm pointing out

1. No other team has a goalie as good as Carey Price.

2. Very few teams have a D man as good as Stamkos' friend PK Subban, and those that do aren't among the list of likely suitors.

3. Montreal's core is in the same age-range as Stamkos, making this an ideal group to make repeated runs at Cups.

4. Montreal is a much better team than last year's finish. This team could win Cups with Price and Stamkos added to last year's roster.

5. Montreal will spend to the cap to provide Stamkos with the supporting cast he needs. Good ownership, good spending ability, no concerns about budget.

6. Montreal is a hotbed for hockey. Opportunity for extra money from sponsorship revenue is high.

7. Opportunity to be the undisputed #1 center and play with Pacioretty on the first line.

8. No having to sit through a re-build.

Please. please, please get on the phone & talk to Don Meehan on our behalf Ted :)

'Pierre LeBrun shared that the Canadiens might be interested in bringing back Dale Weise, while Pierre McGuire argues that Montreal needs to do a better job at selling itself to Steven Stamkos.'

A lot of talk about Perron and Ladd... I'd still prefer Hartnell especially since Columbus may be willing to retain salary... even better player to consider in Columbus but I don't they'll be moved. The NHL really needs to do something about our cap system cause it hurts a lot of the bigger markets and Canadian teams. Taxes are killing us

Perron 28 years old - UFA

Ladd 30 years old - UFA

Hartnell 34 years old - $4.75m cap hit till he is 38 years old

I would have interest in either Perron or Ladd for mid-length deals (3-4 years) meaning they would be 32 or 34 years old respectively when the deal was up. Hartnell just doesnt interest me because of his age & the last few years of his contract, although i think he'd be a decent fit here for at least 1 year. Plus we'd have to give up assets to get him.

Yes, but Bergevin just stated he thought Markov played great at 36. He just dealt Subban for a past-his-prime D man who is 4 years older. Our GM has no idea what he's doing and obviously doesn't feel age is a factor. So who knows what he's planning here.

One more year!

One more year!

One more year!

And maybe Mike Richards is available too. If we're trying to compile players who dole out dirty hits (Weber) and who made homophobic slurs (Shaw), then a dirtbag like Richards should also be high on our wishlist.

That's so much character, though. Can one team handle that much character?

Of course it can! Let's get Shane Doan and BJ Crombeen while we're at it.

I really thought at least some of you would react better than this. Weber is in no way a horrid return for Subban. It freed up cap space. We'll probably be able to add a decent top 6 forward with the cap savings. Not Stamkos but maybe Ladd. I'm sad to see him go, but in no way do I think Bergevin is just casting him aside, it was a tough decision for him to make and I think he's sad to see him go as well. He definitely saw more in him than Therrien. But in no way do I feel we got shafted or that BErgevin's lost direction of this team.

Weber is 4 yrs older and signed for the next 10 yrs . He is in his prime what you see is what you get , or he will start to regress.

Any cap space needed to be freed up could have been accomplished by getting rid of DD or any of the number of 3 rd or 4 th liners that MB keeps signing.

Stamkos wasn't coming here and LAdd wont either IMO

You wanna change the culture get rid of the coach

But what cap savings? We have 1.1-1.2M extra for the next 6 years, then we have 7.8-7.9M extra cap hit for the 4 years after that. All in all, we lose cap space, although we put off the hurt for a few years. I don't think 1M in extra cap space is giving us an extra free agent. If we really needed an extra million we just shouldn't have handed out boneheaded deals to the likes of Byron, Mitchell, Shaw, Flynn, Emelin, and Desharnais. Or else we could just buy someone out or demote them to the minors. I don't think the 1M played a big role in this trade; this trade was made because the triumverate of Bergevin, Therrien, and Pacioretty all disliked Subban and wanted him out. End of story.

The cap space we saved is equivalent to what we're paying for buying out PAP (another Bergevin error)

Weber was an awesome defenseman 5 years ago. I don't think he's very good at all today. And the game is changing further and further away from his style of play.

We had the best defenseman in the league!

This is another day that habs fans will be talking about for the rest of their lives not knowing that another trade is just around the corner. It's like we are trying to lose

As much as I loved PK In my opinion I think this is a pretty even trade. PK is better on the offence side but Webber is better on the defence side. He's bigger and more of a force back there (and gives the puck away alot less). He'll only be 31 next month and still has a few good years left. and lets not forget no distractions either. Over half of Webber's contract is already payed out. And I"ll guarantee you he'll retire at 38. After all the money he's made he will not play for a million dollars a year. The last 3 years of his contract his salary is 1 million per. So we`ll be off the books for that. We also have a number of GM`s that won`t even put him on team Canada. I loved PK as much as the next fellow but Shea Webber is the better player in my opinion right now maybe not in 3 or 4 years but right now he is.

Every advanced metric suggests otherwise ... that PK Subban is in fact a far better player than Weber is at this time.

We totally got shafted ... most points of any dman in the last few years other than Karlsson, every advanced metric showing how much superior PK is to Weber. Older player, worse contract, slow and not mobile like PK ... in every aspect we got shafted. This trade was about getting rid of PK and minimizing the damage (Weber) not about making the Habs a better team.

I like the trade and the more I hear about Weber''s contract and Nashville being responsible for monies if he chooses to retire early. PK did not improve in my opinion last year and was a big distraction. I love what he does for the community, but that opportunity comes because he is a hockey player first and I think PK will do fine with his talents outside of hockey. We'll see how Carey responds but so far the silence has been deafening from his teammates. I have watched a lot of habs come and go and am aware of the history of payers like Harvey being dealt, and while many feel PK has already established as an icon I haven't seen it myself.

As for those who sight the Chelios or Roy trade I don't see it. Roy wanted out and got out. Corson and Chelios like Gilmour (St. Louis) and Ciccarelli (Minnesota) had some public image problems that put them in a poor light. I'm afraid I'm missing much of the hype. It is obvious we can't change who PK is, and I wish him well, but I look forward to seeing what Weber and our first round pick can provide. If nothing else our young vore will learn a lot and have a little more room out there with Weber on the ice.

Pierre LeBrun says we're interested in Lucic. Fantastic. Do it. Sign Lucic AND Weise. Make it happen!

That's more than a little impolite to your fellow poster. That said, here's the best NHL analytics website: http://corsica.hockey. Fortune favours the brave, so take a look.

At this point though, maybe they should. We will certainly have an identity at least. If you're gonna do it, do it

Lucic, while i dont love his after whistle antics is still a useful player. you'd have to make sure its a 1 or 2 year deal only but I would be ok with that if the money wasnt outrageous

At least he won't be pitch-forking our players. <_<

At least, I hope not.

I'm telling you whoever we sign will be 5-7 years at 7-8 million, and that include Lucic
