5'10" and 180 lbs... why would the Habs even be considering this move? Another smallish player for the back-end... yeesch!

Because size is pretty much worthless in predicting the performance of players in the NHL, I'd imagine.

Who are the other smallish players on the back-end? Everybody except Markov is 6'2 or above I believe, including Sergachev and Juulsen. Nesterov won't be here next season.

Not sure which data is correct but Jerabek is listed as 5'11 and 190 lbs here: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=33045

I agree.  If he can get crisp, break out passes onto the sticks of players, at the pace today's game is played at, I don't care that he's 5-10, 180.  Put him out there with Weber.  If Emelin is worth a look at that position, so should this guy.  Especially if he can be an NHL ready strong puck mover and PP guy.  Knowing Bergevin and his management core, they already know and understand that he's defensively responsible.

Picking up good players the way the system is with salary caps is not easy. This is one area I give our scouting staff and Bergevin a good mark. Our staff has allowed us to find players late in the draft or Europeans that want to play n the NHL. If he is for real we may improve our defence and have some others available to use in a trade. This  could be a great signing if he can play

I'd imagine they'd consider it because he put up 34P in 59GP in the 2nd best hockey league in the world.

The left side defense is a bit of a disaster right now. Markov will be 39 next season, he's aged gracefully but it's not hard to imagine him falling off any time now. Emelin is having knee surgery. Beaulieu is as good as gone. Nesterov has been underwhelming in Montreal. Benn/Davidson are both great players but don't provide enough offence to be ideal top 4 options if you want to contend. If this guy can step in and play as a solid #4 next to Petry it'll be a huge success, and even if he can't they got him for free. There's no risk here and potentially medium-high reward.

I really don't get the complaint about him being 5'10". He would be the only Habs regular under 6' and Weber, Emelin, Beaulieu, Petry, and Benn all have a physical element to their games. Even Markov doesn't really play "small".

Sounds like  a similar size to Svoboda and there was nothing wrong with him. I think I've actuallty seen Petr listed at 6 ' He never looked that tall.

He was IMO the best Czech Dman at Worlds last year.
Very smart player with an excellent first pass. He's a great passing PP QB, and responsible defensively; almost like a younger Markov.
On the downside, he has rather average shot, doesn't shoot enough and isn't the fastest skater.
Also he isn't very physical player but when he has to he can hit people pretty hard.

IMO he could end up being solid top 4 Off. D, PP specialist.

Sounds intriguing but the bolded part makes me think he's not a great option next to Weber, but you never know.  Going into next year, assuming we dont move any of core dmen and Markov resigns I would rank our corps as:

______ Weber
Markov - Petry
Davidson/Beau/Emelin - Benn

Sergachev and Juulsen might well make the squad & there's certainly good chance one or more get moved but right now i see no one who is a sure thing to suit up next to weber.  I dont Imagin Jerabek is that guy but we definitely need to figure out who is.

Oh, c'mon now. If you wanted a player who could do pretty much all that stuff you'd have to find a player like PK Subban and they're not to esy to come by. :)

The Habs new acquisition is described as a defenseman who likes to control the puck, has great skating ability and uses these skills to bring the puck into the offensive zone. Not the fastest player doesn't mean he's slow. It just means that. There are others who are faster.

I"m really amazed at how much negativity there is about this guy. There's literally zero risk here, and 34P in 59GP in the 2nd best hockey league in the world is pretty impressive.

I am of the opinion that even if this guy turns out to be the second coming of Pk, it wouldn't matter. Maybe... well this works with women sometimes. Perhaps this rose will convince them otherwise. ~~~~8~{<@                                                                                     LOL

I understand there is zero risk

They can sign all the guys they want , I don't know anything about him and such Im not expecting him to make the big club . If he does great . Look at last Barbiero, Zach Redmond , bunch of guys  from the AHL , no one stuck around .

"Bunch of guys from the AHL" is kinda important context. Jerabek's a top pairing defender in the 2nd best league in the world, Barberio, Redmond, etc. were undervalued bottom pairing guys in the NHL/1st pairing AHL guys.

Are we going to dump on every forward signing because Parenteau and Semin didn't work out?

FWIW Barbario was playing mostly 1st pairing minutes & assignments in Colorado to end the year.  Mind you, its Colorado, so...
