If Markov wants 2 years at 6 million give him 3 years at 4 million and buy him out after 2 if needed.Better tax savings for him and a better cap hit for the habs

You cant buy him out. He's over 35.  That means if you give him 3 years at 4 million you will pay $4m on the cap regardless of how he pays - of if he even plays at all.

There's been some rumblings about us talking to Edmonton about RNH.

Earlier in June apparently the talks were about RNH for Galchenyuk (not sure which side instigated or if it was even valid but i know the Edmonton Journal got into the discussion).  Now ive heard Gallagher or a package of players + Prospects.

Im not sure how i feel about it.   I really like RNH and have been trying to figure out a way to get him into our lineup but i dont know if id pull the trigger at the expense of Gallagher (i definitely wouldnt move Galchenyuk for him).  Even though the deal would be fair (RNH has put up better numbers over a larger sample size than either player) I dont feel like we "need" to make a move involving one of those 2 guys.  And while Nugent Hopkins did play all 82 games last year, injuries concern me as he's had a history of them.

If we hadnt lost 1/2 our defensmen we probably could have enticed them with a package including Emelin or Beau or something but right now im not sure if we can acquire RNH without losing one of the Gallys.

Thoughts?

Edmonton just needs to dump cap space and we can trade draft picks. RNH is going to be a 6 million $ third line centre. Who knows they took DD of us maybe a first and Shaw.We need to add scoring so I wouldn't send either Gally. Edmonton could use some more grit   SHAW + 2018 first for RNH

That would actually be a great idea - shaw at $3.9m cap hit definitely gives them relief and i think they'd be very interested in adding him to their team.  Dont know if I can see MB trading Shaw unfortunately.

I wonder if you could sell Mike Fisher on a 1 year deal to win it all with his old buddy Shea?

Im sure you could and i suspect MB would love to add him, but I dont think he's what this team is lacking.  I can actually live with our forward group (assuming at least one of Drouin or Chuck are used at centre) but we still have (at least one) glaring hole on defense.

He's definitely cheaper but  I dont think many GMs would consider Kassian and Shaw to be comparable players.

Jimmy Murphy (murphy's law hockey) says we have talked to Jagr.  Not sure what that means (I would hope any team would at least enquire about the cost of bringing in a guy like JJ) but not sure how serious MB is.   If the cost is right (and we can still afford Markov) Id be all over bringing in Jagr.   Could have a Czech(ing) line that would be a threat at both ends of the ice in Jagr - Pleks - Hemsky   Our lines could look something like this:

Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher
Lekhonen - Danault - Drouin
Jagr - Plekanec - Hemsky
Byron - Hudon - McCarron

He's got the big body and still protects the puck... Rads did the same and we need to have that type of player.JJ I feel still can give what this team needs in the corners, but only if the price is right. Doesn't look like we are getting a number 1 centre so Galchenyuk or Drouin needs to step it up. I can wait another year for Johnny T. to become UFA and sigh with his pals Price and Shea. Meanwhile Jagr on the right terms can help.

Jimmy Murphy = Eklund = Tony Marinaro... they all blow a lot of smoke out of their behinds, pretty much make guesses as to what's happening, and sometimes can be right but are mostly wrong. I could make just as many hunches as them and be right some of the time too. Murphy's got a reputation for making a lot of stuff up, and there's no real reason to believe we've spoken to Jagr when multiple reports in the past have suggested MB didn't want Jagr in Montreal previously. I'll wait until I hear it from someone more reliable before accepting this rumor as holding weight...

The latest rumour I've heard is that an ECHL team offered Jagr a job (jokingly) and that he said he had not been contacted by ANY NHL team to date.

According to Marc De Foy of Le Journal de Montreal, the team has made a one-year, $1.5 million offer to former Canadiens blueliner Mark Streit.

Putting the squeeze on Andrei?

Well, he moves the puck and has a solid shot. Not sure if he can still keep up in terms of speed though. It's worth a shot with Weber I guess.

I really liked Streit in his time with the Habs and was sorry to see him move on back when... cheap contract but not sure it is the best option available. I'm getting tired of better than nothing acceptance.

This is fantastic news!!!!!  If we can sign Streit and Markov and Jagr and play them on one power play unit together we could call it our Canada Pension Play ...    :4224:

If we are going to stink big time at least we can have a few laughs along the way. Here's to a high draft lottery win .........

Thats what I was wondering.  Markov has to realize he's more useful than streit but $6m for 2 years vs $1.5m for 1 year... i think they are trying to say Markov is asking for too much without actually saying it.

I dont mind streit at all in a different context.   On a 3rd pairing as a PP specialist he's still probably very useful but 1) we need a #1LD not a #3.  and 2) on our 3rd pairing he prevents younger options (JJ, Davidson, Juulsen or Lernout) from getting a chance.  I dont see a fit.

:P

Im more optimistic than you about our chances for the next 2 years but after that things are looking very bleak indeed.

No more or less  of an upgrade if we're comparing with Markov at this stage of both players careers. A lot cheaper option though.  Neither is an answer to playing on our top pairing but if Markov comes to his senses I suppose they could share those minutes. He'd have to really scale back his expectations to get it done at this point. Looks like he's walking.

I'm OK with this, but I have a feeling we won't like the details if we're in a bidding war.
