As the poll indicates: Rumours abound that Pacioretty's tenure with the team is coming to a close.  If that happens, who becomes our next captain?

Weber is the obvious choice as an alternate with team Canada and a past Messier recipient, but how long will he be with us?
Gallagher is the new guard. Is the perfect combination of skill and toughness.  Leads by example
Drouin is the speedy frenchman - probably the most talented francophone we've had since Damphousse
Danault is also Quebecois and there's a long history of having a 2 way forward as captain (Carbo, Gainey, Keane etc)
Price is probably the main leader on the team anyway.  Luongo did it recently. Durnan was Captain for the habs years ago...
Other  is there another worthy candidate?  Or maybe we trade Patches for one... Or maybe we go with 3 alternates for a while..

So, have your say:  Who will be captain if Patches is traded and, if different, who would you like to see captain even if that isnt the teams' choice?

I voted Weber because I think it's basically a lock he'd be the captain if he's still here (and I think the odds MB moves Weber are very slim). I'd rather it be Gallagher though because if we're moving on from Pacioretty and retooling, we should also be moving on from Weber.

I find it strange how it's generally accepted that 29 year old Pacioretty can't be around next year because he's not worth 8Y/7M, but it's fine to have Weber (who will be 33 by next season) around at 7.8M until the heat death of the universe.

absolutely....and how about the fact that one of the big excuses used for doing this move, was that we had that horrible year and it was blamed on this lack of leadership (as in lack of leadership by selfish cocky subban) and weber is just chemically composed of character and leadership and this kind of thing would never happen if we had a guy like him on the team.

well 1 year later its happening EXACTLY the same...so what exactly is this guys function?  his leadership hasnt made a lick of difference, and his shutdown ability has not lead to us winning a whole lot of 2-1 games, and yet hes untouchable and a lock for captain...

and I agree, he will get it. crazy.

Like you, I think Weber would be captain if Pacioretty is traded. I think he's the safe choice and the obvious choice and I don't think Julien/Bergevin would go against that. I also wouldn't be surprised if they go with no captain the rest of the season though and then name one next year, in which case who knows what the roster will look like. Heck, maybe Markov returns as captain! JK I think...you're absolutely right that it makes more sense to keep Pacioretty on a long-term deal (albeit I think he'll log in closer to 7.5-8M a year) than Weber if you look at things in isolation BUT

1. Weber is already signed, so it would mean we need to find a trade partner for Weber and then even if you do, you need to factor in whether the return for Weber is as good as what you should theoretically get for Pacioretty.

2. The bigger thing, I think, is our organizational depth. We have none on defence. None. It's abysmal how we have to use guys like Alzner and Morrow as regulars, and there's really not anyone who's ready to step into a top 4 role next year. You have Petry and probably Mete and then who else? So if you deal Weber and don't make other moves, you pretty much have to get a top 4 D man back. And then that doesn't address the fact that we're overloaded at wing and weak down the middle. If you deal Pacioretty, you deal from your strength and you fill a hole elsewhere, but you don't create another hole with your move.

Now as to who I'd pick as captain? Danault. A couple of years ago, I would have chosen Subban over Pacioretty, but if it was neither guy, my choice was Eller. Now, it'd be Danault. I think there's some danger in choosing a scoring forward who's streaky, because when they don't pick up goals, the pressure really mounts on them, as it did Pacioretty. I don't see Drouin or Galchenyuk as being any different. A defensive forward on the other hand just has to show up, play hard, skate, check, and so on, with less objective measures of failure and success. Danault's good enough at both ends of the ice that he can contribute offensively, but he doesn't have to do that to be an on-ice leader.

i would hope if Pacioretty's on his way out weber would be to, i would fully expect MB to be 100% behind Drouin for captain, staying with his french 1st policy, but i will keep my fingers crossed on weber being moved to edmonton for a centre

... which is possible, but more of an off-season move. Edmonton is having an awful year too and needs to sort out its cap space as well. So I doubt they acquire Weber in-season. And if they were to deal for Weber in the summer, they'd almost have to be willing to part with Draisaitl to make the money work and not sabotage their roster.

What do you think of Gallagher’s behaviour during & after the Nashville game?

Captaincy worthy or childish?

I don't think we need a statesman for captain.  I think we need a bulldog terrier that goes out, scores, hits, and then has the balls to tell anyone who didn't already know why PK was traded to now know.  He's the hardest working player in hockey and he leads by example.  If Max is traded, it will be interesting to see if management puts it to a vote again or not, and who wins the next vote.

BG leads by example every shift.  He's a little guy who takes an unfair pounding every game and he keeps getting up.  If he can work that hard, surely the bigger more talented higher paid guys can too no?  There's a reason teams are calling on him, why we never talk about trading him for a center, and why he's not going anywhere.

It was great to see more of Brendan's personality come out.  He always gives pretty boring canned answers.  I loved it.  Emerge BG emerge!

Besides, why are we asking if BG said childish things...didn't PK say pretty much the same stuff?

I wonder why the team was able to come together and play their hearts out in that game against Nashville...I just can't quite put my finger on it...oh yeah, they hate PK.

I thought it was childish. And it made Gallagher look like the club's yes man. I don't need my respected leader talking trash about a well-liked personality throughout the city.

It wasn't just the talking trash. Gallagher also went out of his way to hit Subban, he apparently dog-whistled at him, he went over to the Preds bench after he scored to say something specifically to PK, and then he made those comments after the game insinuating PK wasn't as good as the other D men on the team and wasn't a reason for the Preds success. As I said, I lost a lot of respect for Gallagher that night. His behavior was embarrassing.

I'll bet PK was trash talking Gally the whole game. He just left it on the ice and didn't say it publicly.

I'll bet he was too. But PK

1. Wasn't running out of his way to after Gallagher

2. Didn't celebrate a goal in Gallagher's face

3. Didn't sound like a baby after the game

It was pretty clear that for Gallagher, it was all about Subban.

I dont disagree with any of this but at least Gallagher has some passion/heart.  This team has turned into boring-ville with guys like Patches, Weber, Price, Drouin - you barely get any emotion whatsoever out of them.

Sure. But hatred directed at one particular ex-teammates isn't going to get you anywhere in itself. Gallagher plays the game with energy, which is good, but he's got to focus on the right things, not trying to settle a personal vendetta.
