So with Weise and Thomspon being acquired and if everyone is healthy ...

Drouin - Danault - Gallagher

Byron - Domi - Shaw

Lehkonen - Kotkaniemi - Armia

Deslauriers - Thompson - Weise

*Hudon/Peca scratched most likely

Mete - Weber

Kulak - Petry

Reilly - Benn/Folin

You forgot Tuna ;)

I think if everyone is healthy we're likely to see:

Drouin - Danault - Gallagher
Tatar - Domi - Shaw
Lehkonen - JK - Armia
Byron - Thompson - Weise

Thats probably the best group of 12 we've seen in a decade.     Scoring across all 4 lines, defensive responsibility across the roster.    I think Hudon is going to get traded, I think Peca may get sent down and I think DLo will (for who knows what reason) remain with the club but will not play if everyone is healthy.

On defense. I think

Mete - Weber
Reilly - Petry
Kulak - Benn

are pretty much set. I dont see MB making a move for the blueline (aside for maybe some depth) but none will supplant Mete.  I think Julien still believes in Reilly (and he sure has wheels) but he needs to cut down on the dumb moves.  Kulak has cemented his spot on the 3rd pair and Benn has looked worlds better this past month or so.  If we get offered something substantial for benn (like a 2nd rounder) then I think you have to take it but if the return is simply a 4th rounder or something I think they will keep him. If they trade Benn  then Folin moves into that slot I think.

I knew I forgot somebody.  Hopefully that's the line up and DLo is used sparingly.   That 4th line looks a lot better than what we've been running to honest.

Agreed.  Byron will basically play the same no matter where you put him in the lineup. He's a garbage goal specialist and almost is more effective on the 4th line where he can get better matchups. Hopefully Weise can get some of his magic back here too.

Not to mention Thompson being a faceoff option.      I can see that 4th line playing a little more 5v5 than what we've had.

On Tuesday, Weise skated on a line with fellow newcomer Nate Thompson and second-year Hab Nicolas Deslauriers - Nos. 22, 21, and 20, respectively - and believes they'll offer up some stability and grit for head coach Claude Julien.

our fourth line needed to get better so MB went out and made some trades, great!

But why is Deslauriers still playing every game?

The GM can only do so much...Deslauriers is arguably the worst everyday player in the NHL but yet CJ is obsessed!

I do not mind the rotating door on the fourth line to keep it fresh and keep that internal competition going but D-LO has got to sit a few out as well, I am fearful that Hudon gets waived once Byron is healthy...ugh

I would like this fourth line

Byron - Thompson - Weise

Byron - Peca - Hudon

Bryon - Thompson - Weise

but never Deslauriers, even with Byron out

Peca - Thompson - Weise

Cant help but wonder what if Plekanec had stuck it out for the remainder of the season (although by all accounts it was MB who made the decision) AND the coaching staff wasnt scared to give guys like JK and Hudon more responsibility:

Drouin - JK - Gallagher
Tatar - Domi - Shaw
Byron - Danault - Armia
Hudon - Plekanec - Lekhonen

That 4th line was like our 2nd line last year. How much better would the roster look? We wouldnt need Thompson or Weise or Dlo etc etc.

So, it seems Weal played quite well in his first game. Let's keep him in the lineup, I say!

Jonathan Drouin - Max Domi - Andrew Shaw

Tomas Tatar - Phillip Danault - Brendan Gallagher

Paul Byron - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Joel Armia

Artturi Lehkonen - Jordan Weal - Dale Weise

He could/should of had a hat trick last night. Quick stoned him in the first period point blank on a rebound although he was tied up a bit. Of course, he scored in the second. In the third he had a wide open net & shot wide. All three were from almost the same area,

Agreed.  I havent been impressed by Weise & I think Hudon would be better with skilled linemates so Id try a third like of Hudon - Weal - Lehkonen  but overall I like where you're going. Thompson needs to sit.  Dlo should be waived.

I agree Weal should be in but I liked Maas' lineup proposal last night better

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Byron - Domi - Shaw
Drouin - JK - Armia
Hudon - Weal - Lehkonen

BROSSARD - A look at the forward lines and defense pairings featured at Monday's practice at the Bell Sports Complex.

Tatar - Weal - Gallagher
Lehkonen/Peca - Domi - Shaw
Drouin - Kotkaniemi - Armia
Deslauriers/Hudon - Thompson - Weise

Mete - Weber
Reilly - Petry
Benn - Folin

Extra: Kulak

Price
Niemi

Byron given a therapy day

No mention of Danault though

is CJ serious though putting Weal on the top line when does JK get the chance to prove he can play there? Also Peca in the top 6! what has he done to prove he deserves to be there too?

^^ Danault also had a therapy day with his facial injury and/or new child... he should be in the line-up tomorrow. The question is who's playing with Domi-Shaw, is it Byron is someone else? And assuming it's Byron, what is the 4th line going to look like when your 3 better players (Lehkonen, Weal, Peca) are being used as subs on higher lines in practice? Really hoping we bump Thompson and Weise out of the line-up and keep Deslauriers in the press box too. Any of the other 4 guys (Weal, Lehkonen, Peca, Hudon) can play and I'd be fine with that.

Yep time to focus on what got us here which is speed! the 4th line needs to be able to keep up.

Yeah its tough to say with guys nursing injuries/ therapy days etc.  Assuming everyone is healthy the best we can hope for is probably:

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Byron - Domi - Shaw
Drouin - Kotkaniemi - Armia
Hudon - Weal - Lehkonen

Mete - Weber
Reilly - Petry
Kulak - Folin

Im guessing Benn and Thompson (and probaby Weise) will be in there though.  I doubt if JK will be given a chance higher up the lineup after being a scratch to 'rest' - i dont think they are going to work him harder.

Its going to be an interesting couple of weeks.  If we cant get something going soon, this is going to be a bad finish. I still have faith but we need to string some wins together asap.

I don't know if i see it as a bad finish we were supposed to be a cellar dweller this season we had some good runs with the guys we have but really we are short on talent. also we are paying for a sad sad power play! imagine if we were even a few % better on that! and lets face it i like Mete but he has never scored a goal in the NHL and he is on out first pairing! Petry is quite good as is Webber but the rest of the D is pretty much spare parts so really we are doing pretty good sad as it is!

Would like to see

Drouin-Domi-Gallagher

Tatar-Kotkaniemi-Shaw

Byron-Danault-Lehkonen

Hudon-Peca-Armia

Mete-Petry

Reilly-Weber

Kulak-Benn

Time to stack the top 2 lines with your best players. Time to put an end to the slower big bodies like Weise, Thompson, Deslauersi, etc. Time to give Petry a better partner than the Benn/Kulak/Folin rotation he's been given. When he isn't paired with a lug, he's proven he can play like a top 10 D man in the league. Time to cut back on Weber's minutes until he proves he can play better (or to do so because of injury, whichever the case may be), all the while still giving him a mobile enough partner to cover for his lack of speed.

Wholeheartedly agree.  That said, here's what Julien did at practice today:

Tomas Tatar - Phillip Danault - Brendan Gallagher
Artturi Lehkonen - Max Domi - Andrew Shaw
Jonathan Drouin - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Joel Armia
Paul Byron - Nate Thompson - Jordan Weal

Victor Mete - Shea Weber
Brett Kulak - Jeff Petry
Jordie Benn - Christian Folin

Antti Niemi
Charlie Lindgren
(Price had a therapy day)

My main concerns here are

1. Lehkonen and Armia can't score reliably, so this seems like a waste of Domi and Kotkaniemi's talents as distributors. Even Drouin hasn't been able to finish of late, so he would probably benefit from playing with two offensive players and not just one.

2. Unclear to me why CJ wants to stick it out with Danault in his top 6. Let him play the shutdown role.

3. Petry needs to play with a better skater. If note Mete, then it needs to be Reilly. Not to say Reilly has been good lately, but at least he allows Petry to be better. Any time we've seen Petry paired with a slower third-pairing type guy, his own game goes down the toilet.

I agree with all of this.

Im all for balanced scoring lines but when most of the roster is having trouble scoring maybe its time to put together your best offensive forwards & create a singular shut down line.  I love Danault but he looks totally off with the cage.   Domi, Gallagher, Drouin, JK, Tatar are your 5 best offensive weapons.  Byron can play pretty much anywhere and Shaw has been excellent in a top role so I would use those 6 in my top 2 lines.  There's no shortage of shut down players for the bottom 6.

LIke you, i think something is off with Weber. I would suspect its an injury. I believe putting Petry with Mete & giving them top minutes, while Weber is allowed a little less ice time and a good fast skater like Reilly (or Kulak) then i think our top 4 would be better.

how many times has this been said on this forum in the last 10 years!?

carbonneau, therrien, julien, we just keep hiring coaches who fall in love with their plugs, then we make a bunch of minor trades and waiver pickups to make sure the plug pipeline is nice and deep, and then we sprinkle them throughout the lineup and go out there and battle for 8th.  the modern era montreal canadiens
