11 million a year

That's money better spent than on a goalie.  At least there is a return on goals!

Holy Moly! John Tavares chose the Leafs rather than speak to the Canadiens.   How the hockey order has changed!  The proverbial boot is truly on the other foot now.  How low have this team sunk.... :6351:

Stupid, stupid move. It's no wonder we're a garbage team.

Well it’s good to have him finish his career in Montreal.  Maybe they can treat somebody the right way!  If it keeps up maybe we can sign some hockey players and stop giving them away all the time?

Creating a winning team in Laval is not a bad idea. Maybe when we recall someone who is playing on a team that is doing well they will pass that on.

Stastney at 6.5 and Bozak at 5 million. Wow that is not a way to bulid a team. The deals not made today in my mind are the right choices.

Plekanec with bonus wil make 3.5 million not sure that should of been done.

The guy grew up a leafs fan.  He left a lot of money on the table to sign there instead of another team (especially those in the no income tax states) so i dont think anyone could have won him over TO.

Yeah i really dont have a problem with pleks back on a 1 year deal.  I think they are approaching this season as a transition year anyway.

Absolutely.  If you're one second line centre away from a cup run maybe you overpay for Stastny or Bozak but we have so many holes it made no sense.   I never really have an issue with bonuses.  Generally, if a player ears them, he's had a great year so its a win for everyone.

Telling that we dont seem to be going hard after any guys.  Lets hope this means that we're actually looking to rebuild this roster properly. Really wish it wastn MB at the helm to do so though.  WIll Weber or others be shopped now?   I doubt it, but he should be.

The Leafs definitely need D more than centers. They're actually pretty stacked at center already. However, I wonder if this signing means someone else is available, be it Kadri or Nylander or someone else. If you're Toronto, you sign the all-star you can get for free without giving up assets, then you work on making a trade to acquire the part you can't sign (no elite D men on UFA market).

Yes, Karlsson is out there as a trade option, but he's a UFA after this season, the Leafs would never be able to afford a 10-14M salary on him thereafter, and they'd certainly be unable to take on Ryan as part of the deal. I don't see any way those teams could work out a deal. This is where I'll come back to the Habs. Babcock loves Weber. He's drooled over him in the media repeatedly. I could without a doubt see Toronto being over the moon sliding Weber in next to Rielly on their top pairing. And frankly, we need to get out from that contract, which would allow us to re-sign Pacioretty long-term too.

I have no interest in Kadri. He's already 27, which is too old a player to acquire if your Cup window target is in 3-4 years. So the guy you target has to be Nylander. He would give us a right-handed top 6 center. He's an RFA who will probably get 4-5M per year on his deal, and the Leafs had already been entertaining the idea of trading him for D help last year. If they get Tavares and have Matthews and Kadri down the middle too, I think that could be what pushes them to make the trade. I also think that signing JT would make them feel they're really close to a Cup, and they may be more willing to overpay for what they might view as "the last missing piece" in Weber. We know Babcock has been heavily involved in meeting UFA's this off-season, so he's obviously got some pull in the decision-making with the young GM. Dealing Weber for a package that includes Nylander just makes a lot of sense for both teams. So I'd propose

Weber for Nylander, Tor's 1st in 2019, and one of Liljegren or Sandin (Tor's choice of who they want to give us).

Toronto gives up futures with a legit Cup shot for the next few years. We get room to realistically sign Pacioretty and acquire assets for Cup runs in a couple of years. MB pulled off the type of trade with Wpg I suggested, and if he's reading this, Toronto signing Tavares would be exactly the thing to put us in great position to deal them Weber for Nylander plus.

Some sort of Nylander for Weber deal could make a lot of sense for both teams (not sure Weber is worth quite that much to also involve a 1st and top prospect, but I'd consider the deal 1 for 1). Weber is relatively cheap for a top dman and is liked by Babcock and Toronto has clearly just entered a Stanley Cup window - perhaps apart from some questions on defense. While Weber may not be quite a top-10 dman anymore,  his addition would still make Leafs strong contenders for at least the next few seasons.

Agreed. I think the best you could hope for 1 for 1 (weber for Nylander) or *maybe* Weber for Nylander + _____ one other piece.

The holdup would be MB imho.  I cant see him trading Weber.  He's just too stubborn.

On JT: Ya, that cap hit is downright reasonable for a UFA signing. I thought he'd get like 13-14 million (which would be a bit of an overpayment given he's not quite in the upper echelon of centers). And like you said, Toronto (while mildly better than Montreal) isn't in a great tax situation.

On Pleks: I don't have strong feelings either way. I could buy the argument that it would be better to give those minutes to someone younger with long-teram upside, but it's not like we're stacked with promising young centers, so I doubt it makes much difference long-term. And he is a player I've always liked. So I doubt it helps us much, but kind of nice to have him back.

On Stastny: I actually don't mind that deal since it was only for 3 years, but ya I don't think Montreal made a lot of sense to offer it.

Plekanec back to MTL, one year deal, $2.25M base salary,

$250K for each of 30, 40, 50 GP and another ( should be easy the way he plays to not get hurt )

$250K for 10 goals OR 25 points.

That’s $3.25M in salary and achievable bonuses.

Also a $250K bonus if MTL makes playoffs. ( not going to get that one )

Since they already announced their press conference for the afternoon, it looks like MB is done shopping today.  I'm really glad he didn't do more damage by signing Bozak or Stastny.

Barring a major trade, the current roster looks absolutely brutal and we're certainly one of the worst teams in the league. It also seems we're starting the season with plenty of unused Cap space again. That's fine though, we won't be able to turn this mess into a contender via trades/free agents anyway. Let's give Poehling, Kotkaniemi and the other kids plenty of time to develop and acquire as much young talent as we possibly can. It's the only viable option we have at this point.
