Very good. One-year deal for the right amount of money. No complaints here. I wonder if that means the team will move on from Weal.

This is horrible.  It looks like the bargin bin of old has returned.  Of course Bergevin resigned Nate Thompson.  So he can have another excuse for why yet another 3rd overall pick of ours can't play centre but he'll make an awesome LW on a 4th line with Thompson and Weise.  :5785:

You're presuming JK doesn't play exactly where he did for 99% of the season?  at C between Lehkonen and Armia?

My guess is that they went to Weal first & he is looking for term.  If i was betting on it, id say that guys like Folin, Benn, Thompson, Weal - etc - would only be offered 1 year deals.  So even though Weal may be a more versatile player, if he wants more than 1 year, then they said bye bye.

Thompson at 1 year is no biggie. He was quite good on the fourth line once he got good wingers and at the price, he's another player who can be sent to Laval at basically no cap hit, if it turns out there's no room for him.

Yup ... given all the young guys close to or ready to join the big club ... the hole plugs we've had will only get a 1 year deal.

Nothing wrong with this signing in my opinion, he's a reliable 4th line center capable of winning faceoffs. I'd obviously prefer Weal, not sure if we should sign both though.

How many 4th liners does 1 team need?

3 ... Deslauriers, Weal, Thompson would count as our 4th liners.   Weise is likely done in the NHL and is at best injury insurance.

Well lets hope that Delauriers and Peca are sent directly to Laval during training camp.

Waste of money and gives the coaches another marker to sit one of the young guys when they make that first mistake.

We did not get better with him in the lineup the team actually got slower and the 4th line got worse. We were a 500 team with Nate in the lineup

If you dont believe me check the corsi numbers Agostino had a corsi for over 56%, Chaput was 52 % Nate was 50% They were both better skaters and much younger..

Here are our top 10 forwards (barring moves) in no particular order: Drouin, Domi, Gallagher, Danault, Kotkaniemi, Lehkonen, Tatar, Shaw, Armia, Byron. So one of those guys and everyone else is considered a 4th liner until proven otherwise. Right now, the 4th liners signed include Thompson, Weise, Peca, Hudon, and Deslauriers, although I have no doubt Hudon will be traded. Weal would be another name on the list if he signs, and apparently we're still negotiating with him, so signing Thompson hasn't ruled out Weal returning. Then add on the possibility that a player like Suzuki, Poehling, or Evans could make the roster. At the very least, having Thompson around might hopefully push one or both of Weise or Deslauriers to the minors. I have less of a problem with Peca here, but Weise and DLo both need to be gone.

I like him and for one year at that price i am fine with it. he can still skate pretty good and is really good on faceoffs.

:4224:  Your comment made me laugh instantly.  Bergevin has become so predictable, eh?  We know what (little) to expect from him every time.  Same old, same old.

Yup......If Thompson wasn't already a Hab you just know MB would have gone out and signed him.

I forgot about Peca ... I think he's gone too.     I can see MB signing Weal and that Thompson/Weal are your 4th line, Weise walks and DLo is gone.

I think Charles Hudon is gone. As in... not signed to a contract by Montreal for 2019-2020. Whether he's traded or just not qualified, I don't know. I don't really care, to be honest.

I expect Deslauriers, Peca, and Weise to all be in camp since they already have contracts with Montreal for next season. I don't believe they will have locks on spots with Montreal though. They may be demoted to Laval. Which is fine.

I would expect Thompson will see plenty of game time in Montreal. We'll have to wait and see what happens with Weal.

I want to be clear.  I do not have any issue with Nate Thompson as a player or a person.  I take issue, however with how the signing of Nate Thompson will affect the playing time and usage of younger players like:  Kotkaniemi and Poehling.  And maybe it is just a paranoia of having watched this same scenario play out for the last 8 years.  I guess I'm trying to say I do not trust Bergevin as a hockey executive.

I feel like its unlikely they let Hudon go for nothing. I think they will qualify him but i think they will try to trade  him.  I mean he clearly doesnt seem to be in the plans but on the flip side they know they have an asset there or they would have sent him to Laval & risked waivers.   Very very odd treatment of him - especially after his breakout season just the year before.

This actually surprises me.  Not that we are talking to weal but i would have expected a logical course of action to be talking to weal first and then if we couldnt reach a deal, doing the 1 year deal with Thompson.  Im pretty surprised we gave NT a deal before we even talked with Weal.   Bergevin knows there's only 12 forward spots on a roster, right?

Although considering we had like 42 defensmen in camp last year I guess MB just likes loading up on quantity - quality be damned.

I have no problem with either of them being signed but it seems sort of odd to sign both with Poehling and Suzuki both having a good chance of being ready next year...

Its a fair point. Not only bergevin but julien too. I like Julien, I think he's a competent coach but there's no question he favours "safe" roster moves over giving kids a chance.  I suppose the biggest hope is that a guy like Suzuki plays so well he bumps a player like Armia or Shaw down to the 4th line.

I don't know if it's just a case of covering your bases if the kids don't work out but I have serious concerns now that the kids will get a fair look with all these veteran bodies to choose from. Like maas said,,, Julien seems to favour his vets over developing his youth. At least it seems we have competent coaches to do the heavy lifting in the minors now.

OMG did we seriously just sign Weal to a 2.8 mil contract??  Are mediocre NHL players suddenly a premium? For the love of god plz send MB packing ASAP

We have young players that deserve the chance or seasoning more than Weal WTH!!

Except ....

Both Poehling and Suzuki are not shoe-ins for a roster spot ... you lose nothing signing Thompson/Weal and then sending them to the minors if the young guys steal a roster spot.    You do however have to scramble if any of the young guys struggles at the NHL level and you've not signed NHL capable players to cover.    Weal and Thompson are both slated to be on the 4th line ...

So if both Suzuki and Poehling make it out of camp, then perhaps you see :

Drouin - Domi - Suzuki

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher

Lehkonen - Kotkaniemi - Armia

Byron - Poehling - Shaw

And we roll 4 lines.
