2019-20 State Of The Habs

Habs are now the 7th-worst team in the entire league. They are 5 points up on being 3rd-worst and 8 points up on 2nd-worst, with NJ having two games in hand on us. Conversely, we are now 6 points behind Tampa for 3rd in the division (with TB holding two games in hand) and 7 points back of the wildcard. Julien announced today that he does not expect any of Armia, Drouin, or Byron back before the all-star break, meaning they are all at least 3-4 weeks away, so I'm not sure this is getting any better in the short-term.

To me, it has become very clear that we are not winning anything this season. We should be all in on

1. Playing our youngsters to get them experience

2. Aiming to move older players for ones who can help us past this year and next

3. Aiming for the best possible draft pick

Time to fire the coach and bring up a rookie goalie and hope to go on a winning streak like St Louis did last year

I would settle for just fire the coach

I don't think it would change anything . This team didn't; have what it takes to make the playoffs from the start of the year IMO .

Better off firing MB , and let someone else build the team . MB has had long enough to build the team .

Even if we fire CJ and don't make the playoffs it would be way better than having him play Cousins and Weal higher up the lineup than JK, Suzuki, Lehkonen, Armia, Poehling and even Domi. The line combos alone would be enough to make the team better.

Considering that JD, Armia, and Byron won't be back until after the all star break, we have to do with what we have. It's a mish-mash of lines at this point.

I don't dis agree with that but can you honestly say Cousins on the 1st line makes more sense than Suzuki, Lehkonen Domi or Poehling? I get that Domi, Lehkonen and Suzuki are playing well together but shouldn't we be putting our best 6 forwards in the top 6 positions? Even if you have to move Domi to the wing for a few games to fill the top 6 holes then do that before putting a 4th liner on the 1st line.

Tatar-Danault-Lehkonen

Poehling-Domi-Suzuki

Cousins-Kotkaniemi-Vejdemo

Wiese-Thompson-Weal

Looks way better at least on paper than having Cousins on the 1st line. I liked Poehling with KK and would like more of it going forward but not if Cousins gets 1st line duties.

if we assume that 98 points is the benchmark for making the play-offs Montreal would have to play at a .680 clip for the duration of the season...with 5 regulars out this must gives Hab fans something to think about..I'm optimistic as the next guy and this was done just one year ago by St Louis but I believe they had pretty much a full roster and at least 3or 4 rookies wasn't  part of their equation ...this is the task at hand and though I like their 100 % effort each and every night I must say post-season aspirations are far from realistic unless an extended winning streak starts now ……..I'll be tuning in

I think, once again, the question will soon turn to, should Marc Bergevin be fired? And when?

I don't think we're going to make the playoffs this season. That's another missed opportunity for Molson. How many more seasons is he willing to keep taking this ride with Bergevin at the wheel? Tons of missed revenue for him.

I don't think Molson cares too much about the financials if making the playoffs especially if it's just for a single round. I read somewhere that the average profit for a single playoff series for a team is around 8 mil. Let's make a couple of assumptions to calculate how to easily make up that loss. The Bell centre holds about 21000 right. Let's assume an average concert ticket costs about $200 and Molsons cut is 10% of all sales. If Molson holds a concert both Saturday and Sunday for all 6 weeks of the playoffs the math works out like this

$200 x 21000 x 0.1 x 12 days = $5,040,000

That's just from weekend sales of concert tickets. I don't think he is going to whine about 2-3 mil when he could easily double that by hosting weekday events.

St Louis despite being the worst team still had a far better lineup than we do.   Even if you argue they have a similar talent level ... are you really saying "lets just luck out and ride the hot streak of a rookie goalie to a cup" is the best plan?

It's better than saying let's teach the kids how to lose instead of let's show the kids what it takes to win in this league.

Yeah, I don't get the St.Louis talk either. Sure, it's mathematically possible that we still make the playoffs and of course everybody loves a great Cinderella story but I don't think that the craziest run in the history of hockey could be repeatable, especially with this roster.

This.   I don't understand the complacency with this roster on the off chance "we get lucky" or "things come together at the right time"

Lets ignore the current troubles, lets even say we make the playoffs.    Is this roster a playoff team?  Not even close ... they lack in so many areas that any playoff appearance will be short lived.

1. St. Louis had a legit #1 C, a legit elite level sniper and a legit top 4 headed by a legit #1 D.  the crazy thing was them being in last place, not them being a contender. not in any way a comparable situation

2. the time to fire bergevin has come and gone a long long time ago. we are so far off the reservation now I think I see the tin man and the cowardly lion

I just don't even know anymore. I'm so tired of these guys depressing me my whole life.  Now what, we were close and we had injuries bla bla bla take another year Marc. Ugh

Yup, the closest comparables we have to O'Reilly, Tarasenko, and Pietrangelo are probably Domi, Tatar or Gallagher, and Weber. Without even taking the rest of the respective rosters into consideration, I know where I'd place my money.
