Jonathan Drouin

Pure speculation by a writer.

... who also added: " That could leave Drouin playing third line centre on a purely offensive line with Mike Hoffman and Josh Anderson."

Since when is the 3rd line a "purely offensive" one? These writers - I don't know ...

This idea of Drouin moving back to center is interesting. I don’t particularly love the idea, but I don’t hate it either. I know that he didn’t work out as our #1 C when we tried it, but I don’t exactly remember what specifically made it a failure. Was it face offs? Positioning? I know he has improved in general on a lot of the things like back checking, defence. Might those improvements translate into his ability to play center? I don’t know. I don’t think it’ll hurt to try it out, especially if the pressure of having to be the go to guy has been removed. One thing I will say, as unenthusiastic as I am about it, like him or not, he is a better hockey player than Kotkaneimi is, at this moment. Maybe time proves different, but for now this is the case. Drouin is more offensively gifted than Kotkaneimi. I’d still like to see Poehling get a shot first, but it’s an interesting plan C

I dont think he's suggesting a third line is traditionally an offensive one. I think the idea is that your top 2 lines would take more 'even' shifts while a line of Hoffman-Drouin-Anderson would be sheltered (thus 3rd line minutes) with more offensive starts etc.

Its not a bad idea if we had a good 2nd line centre... you're going to play Evans there after only 60 nhl games & projecting more like a defensive specialist?  Could be risky, although Lehkonen - Evans - Gallagher would be great defensively and pretty tough to play against... so who knows.

I assume if we dont get JK back, we will almost certainly trade for a 2nd line centre but then maybe Drouin doesnt need to move there?  I dunno. Big mess.

If Drouin moves back to center this season, I can live with that. Maybe this'll be his breakout season. Who knows? If Kotkaniemi comes back, Drouin certainly won't be the main media scapegoat for the year. KK will have that locked up.

Thats for sure.

As you said this morning - im back and forth on whether we should match or not, but one thing is for sure: if we do match & he does anything other than coming out and scoring a PPG, i think he's going to hear the Boo Birds like no other player - maybe ever - to play for the habs.

He was actually ok for stretches ( i think there was a patch of like 30 or 40 games at centre when he put up a PPG) but he just isnt a #1c.   #2 or #3? Maybe.  He's also matured defensively since then.

The big thing though is that (assuming CC is locked in with Suzuki) Drouin would have 2 of:  Anderson, Toffoli, Hoffman or Gallagher. Yes he had Gallagher and Pacioretty for a time at centre but he never gelled with Patches. Gallagher had a great season next to him - one of his 30 goal years.

Jonathan Drouin said he expects to play center for the Montreal Canadiens this season.

"It looks that way for sure," Drouin told the Montreal Gazette for a story published Monday. "I don't make those decisions, but that's where I played last year and I feel comfortable coming in this year and knowing that I'm playing center."

Did he actually play much center last season - or does he still have "issues"?

I don't know.  I watched a lotta games, and I don't remember JD playing any center.  Sure this article wasn't a few years old? Then it might make sense. Or, JD is in a time warp.

I guess a couple of questions is 1) who is locked in with Suzuki and Caufield? And 2) Has Drouin effectively shaken the cobwebs out of his head? I’d love to think that he’s had some sort of transitional turning point. Everything is sorted and in the right places.

What could these lines look like?

Toffoli - Suzuki - Caufield

Hoffman - Drouin - Anderson

Lehkonen - Evans - Gallagher

Perreault - Pacquette - Armia

But I also like

Drouin - Suzuki - Caufield

Hoffman - Evans - Gallagher

Toffoli - Poehling - Anderson

Lehkonen - Perreault - Armia

Either way, I don’t think these look all that bad. Which plays a roll in why I not only hope we don’t match Carolina’s offer, but also hope we don’t rush out and waste the return assets out of desperation, because I really don’t think we’re anywhere near as desperate as it may seem.

I guess I'd be OK starting with this lineup.  And that's saying a lot,  as no JD fan here. BUT, we HAVE to get a PMD! No good having good potential at the forward positions if we can't get them the puck.

It'll be Brisebois levels of booing, I think.

RDS  says he is doing an interview Sept 20th should be interesting.

Pretty strong speculation that its performance anxiety depression / mental health for Drouin - regardless I hope he conquers whatever demons he possessed and recovers

More curious info on JD.

He is apparently now NOT giving the big 1 on 1 interview with Chantal Machabee.   Someone on twitter asked her if there was a connection between the cancelled interview (its been removed from RDS's schedule) and a possible trade, she said "No link, i will explain the situation soon."

So thats 2 or 3 fairly reputable media sources saying something is "up" with Drouin one way or another... some speculate there's a trade, others say no. He was skating (Today I think?) but its definitely odd....

I think Jonathan knows what is going on and we are the ones creating the drama. He is entitled to his privacy as are all of us. Hope fully he comes back and has a great year so we can create a new and improved drama. The media always needs something to talk about. It appears to be the nature of the business.

Amid rumours that the whole thing had been scrapped, both RDS and TVA in Quebec will be airing one-on-one interviews with Jonathan Drouin of the Montreal Canadiens Monday night. Drouin left the team mid-way through last season and did not return due to "personal reasons." There was a ton a of speculation as to why he made the decision, but Drouin had never spoken out on the reasons himself. In a teaser clip for the interview, which is in French, Drouin added some insight.

He told Chantal Machabee of RDS that there were times he would go three consecutive nights without sleeping and then, in some cases, have to play back-to-back games. In the clip, he insisted that he never lost his passion for hockey and spent time watching games, sometimes six a night, before taking time off. Ultimately, he said he took time off to put his life in order and find a healthier pace, adding what he was doing just wasn't viable any longer.

In a brief clip released by TVA Sports, Drouin told Renaud Lavoie he has suffered from both anxiety and insomnia.

Drouin is attending training camp with the Montreal Canadiens and is expected to start the season with the team. We should know more about his reasons for his time away when the interviews air Monday night. The sit-down with RDS will be broadcast at 7:30 Quebec time, while TVA will air its interview at 8 PM.
