According to Renaud Lavoie, Romanov will join the Habs for phase 3. He will sign and burn the first year of his ELC and be allowed to practice with the Habs, but for whatever reason the NHL does whatever they do, he is ineligible to play in games. Not sure why Habs did this, but we now don't get to see him in games and lose a year of his ELC, cost-controlled contract.

Yeah seems very very odd.

Maybe they think they can appeal the decision?  I have no idea why you would burn a year of an ELC if there's not even the possibility of playing a game!

May have been a condition on him signing his ELC.

Yeah, seems like a terribly bad idea to lose a year on his entry-level contract. But no worries, we'll soon be in the third effort of Bergevin's five-year plan. Maybe he'll get it right between years 11-15.

Still not sure how this idiot has a job!!  Either Molson is easily fooled or MB gives better BJ's than his wife

Ive read a few places that the thought is that he wouldnt sign the contract if it didnt start asap.  Meaning there was a risk (albeit, probably low) that he would sign another KHL deal if MB had balked at the 1st year going into affect immediately.

The problem for MB is that he's made so many boneheaded moves that we assume he's made another when he may not have in this case.

Agreed, I think the fear of him re-signing in Russia plays a big role here.

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. I've read as well that there's a good chance Romanov could sign a 1-year deal in the KHL if the Canadiens didn't burn a year of his ELC, according to reports the KHL plans to start the new season at the beginning of September, i.e. six weeks down the road. He hasn't played a game since March and training camps for next season probably won't start before November, which is definitely not ideal. Then there are rumors about NHL teams planning to organize some sort of tournament or even several tournaments to give players a chance to play as early as September, which would be good for Romanov to get used to the rink size and experience the NA game first-hand. Plus you're giving him plenty of time to settle down and get to know Montreal before next season starts, which is another bonus.

I think Montreal might have been woae to sign him and burn the 1 year I get it because you burn a year but this way you have him in the bubble getting used to his teammates and even the nhl announcers who did one of the playoffs games said hell be good and another upside to burning a year is that buy the time the contract up the cap will not go up that much so maybe it give the team more leverage

...just saw an interview with  Romanov about his first NHL game .....he already understands and speaks English better than Markov did after all his years in Montreal ....if he can continue to play anything like Andre we'll be fine for years

I'm glad to read that Bergevin will not include him in any potential trade for Dubois. I think we need to sit with Romanov for a few years to see what he's going to be. I do not want to lose him after he just got here.

absolutely ...he's a keeper and already an effective NHLer after only 2 games

He's already our 3rd best defenceman. Will he maintain that level of play? Too early to know.

... he's everything he was advertised to be and he's still learning the North American game ...I don't see a downside to this kid

I really thought he needed a year. I was very wrong. Time to bump him up to Webber’s pair. I’d say Petry but I think their games are too similar. Chairrot would be perfect beside Petry. And frankly I think Edmundson blends better with Kulak.

Chairot & Petry spent time together last year & it wasnt good - but, mind you, that was when Ben was still having trouble adapting to the system.  I feel like he'd do better now but still not sure its ideal.   Honestly, if we could put players where they really should be, skill wise, id do:

Romanov - Weber
Kulak/Mete - Petry
Chiarot - Fleury/Kulak/Mete

Edmundson - Im still not giving up on Edmundson and i wouldnt be upset with him on the 3rd pair, but right now I just feel like he's ranked below all those other guys.

I never pay enough attention to know who's been on the ice against what players, but generally speaking there's usually a difference between the opposition that you're up against in the first pair vs the third pair.  Romanov has looked great so far, no doubt, but I don't mind leaving him where he is for a while longer.  There's nothing wrong with letting him continue to grow in confidence a bit before throwing him completely into the fire :)

No question, although Julien has been using him in most situations - seemingly without regard for who he's up against so thats a very good sign.

I had the kid pegged as being NHL ready going into the bubble and if he had been allowed to play think we would have been able to at least force game seven vs the Flyers. I also said he would\should be moved up within 10 games. The kid is legit, I can't wait for Norlinder, can you imagine that duo!

This is spot on, Julien has the luxury this year of not caring about matchups. Every line and D pairing is getting equal or close to equal time against all different levels of opponents.

He’s caring more than you think. It’s hard when away team though. Buy he’s trying.

I agree on his potential- I’ve been worried about losing Weber as he slows even more in the next 2 years but with what I hope is great upside with Struble (IQ and coaching but tremendous physical ability and skating) , Guhle’s nastiness, Potential steady eddy Jordan Harris, Fleury, and Norlinder, I like the defense pipeline . I just hope none are traded in that zest for proven forwards unless it’s a lopsided deal for PLD
