Joel Edmundson

Habs acquire UFA rights to Joel Edmundson for a 5th round pick. I don’t know much about this guy other than he’s large. Probably a spare part and this year’s Folin. Makes Oullet and Mete a little redundant

He's better than Folin. That said, he's ideally a 3rd-pairing player as well, so MB continues to add quantity on defence without addressing the real need for a top-pairing LHD. All this assuming we actually sign him. If he stays, we now have Edmundson, Chiarot, Kulak, Mete, Ouellet, and Romanov on the left side. Not a single true top 4 player among them but lots of 3rd pairing guys and spare parts. Would have to think another trade is in the works, and my money would be on Mete leaving.

Don't see how anybody can be surprised about MB loading up on lower pairing D. It's been his mission in life since becoming GM of the Habs. That's why i half jokingly mentioned the 31  year old guy from Ottawa a few days ago. You know his motto,,,, you can't have enough quantity on D. Quality is only an after thought.

Guy is coming off a one year 3.1 mil contract BTW. A 5th is pretty much a 95% chance of never seeing an NHL game but it's still an asset. You have to think MB has a strong inkling that he can sign the guy. He better not be looking for an Alzner type deal. That's the part that worries me.

I'm assuming he's somewhat mobile ...6'4" 215 lbs , 27 yrs old ...last year 7 g 13 a for 20 pts ...plus +25 in career ...53 play-off games under his belt .( over 300 career games ) ..coming off a 3yr deal for 3.1 mill per ...is a UFA  ...2011 46th overall ( 2nd round ) ...he's big and that might be the point ...our 3rd pairing was small ...maybe this is protection for Romanov ...Mete probably gone ...something's up ...maybe Bergevin wants to get him for Chairot type coin ( 3.5 / 3yr ) 5th rounder is peanuts if you want to sign him or flip his rights

Metes value is that he can play both sides of the D - neither exceptional however, and I think you are right that Mete Or even Kulak could be on the block. Edmundson’s size is impressive and a #46 pick in the 2011 draft that has probably not lived up to that billing. Another Bergevin reclamation project ugh when we really need a top pairing LHD. He was a Stanley Cup winner to join Jake Allen in that synergy. Noted his Salary in 2019 was $3m so it will be interesting what term and amount we may sign him for.

MB already liked depth on D, but I think for next year coming up in particular, he's putting a very strong emphasis on quality depth due to the compressed schedule, both in net, and on D.

I don’t know much about him, but on paper he compares well to Chiarot. Chiarot played most the year on the top line with Webber (I could be mistaken, but it seemed that way) on the first pair, where in the lineup did Edmundson play?

In case you're wondering how much this trade shakes up the line-up, in theory it shouldn't have a huge impact. I have no doubt MB views Edmundson as his 2nd best LHD behind Chiarot, but in practice, this is how I would personally rank our LHD in terms of potential utility for next season:

1. Kulak

2. Romanov

3. Chiarot

4. Edmundson

5. Mete

6. Ouellet

Kulak is grossly underrated and an excellent 3rd-pairing player, in addition to being a good match for Petry. He's a great skater, which is what you need to be in today's NHL. Romanov has potential but is largely an unknown. Chiarot is overrated and a decent 3rd-pairing option who is being played over his head. Edmundson looks like he'll be the same. He was statistically the worst Canes D man last year in terms of advanced stats and possession numbers. Worst Corsi. Worst expected goals for. Strongly negative Corsi relative. He was also a negative Corsi relative player his last few years in St. Louis. All that to say, don't hold your breathe for him to be a savior.

It's easy to see why Carolina let him go . They weren't going to sign him anyway . The Hurricanes are solid on D and have Slavin ( 5 more yrs ) , Skjei ( 4 more ) , Gardiner ( 3 more )  , Fleury and up and coming Jake Bean on the left side . If Carolina signs van Riemsdyk they will have Hamilton and Pesce ( 4 yrs ) to fill out the right side .  Their forwards are mostly signed to term as well . Way ahead of Montreal in terms of contracts .

The Canes absolutely have to mourn the day they signed Gardiner for that amount and term, based on last year’s performance.  Their owner is an egotistical know it all, so I expect them to make a move to sign or trade for another scorer, or even upgrade at RHD for their 3rd pairing over TVR / Vatanen. They don’t have a lot of cap room. What is clear to me is that Jake Bean is in a logjam behind Slavic/ Skej / Gardiner / Fleury and would be a waste as a 3rd pairing. Imo He’d be an excellent Prospect acquisition but for what tbd

I can't help but think there's correlation between the Jake Allen and Joel Edmundson acquisitions.  I also think the addition of Edmundson gives a little more size to a blueline and a team overall that has traditionally lacked it.  For those who don't understand what he brings to the table, here's some numbers to crunch:

118 hits-1st among CAR defenders

91 Blocked Shots-Tied for 3rd on CAR

2:48 MINS on PK per game-3rd on team

+7 +/-Tied for 3rd on CAR blueline

His +/- alone would've put him in 2nd on our blueline in that category.  He would've been 3rd on our defence corps in hits and blocked shot as well.  I think he shores up our blueline pretty good, leaving Mete, Kulak and Romanov to fight it out for the final 2 spots in the top 6.  If anything this move affords you the ability to be patient with Romanov and his development.

More of the same junk from Bergevin. He just traded a fifth rounder (admittedly, I don't care about the pick) for a bottom-pairing UFA defender who is coming off of a one-year $3.1 million deal. What are we trying to do here? Pay him $3.5 to be our 6th-7th defender? Is this an apology fifth rounder for the Aho offer sheet?

I can't wait to see all the "This must be a precursor to a bigger trade" comments. Lol.

I watch his highlight reel and this guy looks like an upgrade over Kulak - closer to a 3-4 pairing while Romanov develops. Kulak is likely to get exposed in the Kraken ED with Joel or Chiarot, assuming Petry is resigned. Not a swing for extra bases but not necessarily total junk.

Sorry, I don't mean that Edmundson is junk. I mean that any move Bergevin makes which doesn't bring us closer to being competitive is junk. And this is another one of those moves. Every off-season, my father and I talk about the chance we make the play-offs in the upcoming season. He always believes we'll make it and I always say, "No dad, we won't."

I refuse to pretend that this qualifying round/COVID situation is anything to be happy about. In my mind we've missed the play-offs four times in the past five seasons. And a first round exit to the Rangers in 2016-17 isn't anything to be happy about either.

Maybe the Allen acquisition gets a few extra points throughout the regular season. The Edmundson deal does nothing for us. Just an attempt to spend more money on a weak defender. It might make us a worse team if we have Edmundson in our lineup regularly.

I don't see him that way either at this point ....actually I don't remember seeing him at all but I know he's big , hits and block shots ..  he isn't even and signed he's getting criticism .There aren't many teams that can put together 3 or 4 great defensemen on the same team but simply put this seems to fill a 3rd pairing size need with some experience and protection at 6'4" 215 lbs .

I'm looking at what Montreal has on the farm if their starting 6 is Weber /Chiarot ,Petry /Kulak , Edmunston /Fleury ( with maybe Juulsen in the 7 hole )...that would leave smallish Leskinen , smallish rookie Romanov , Brook , and Olofsson ...Even if smallish Mete or smallish Ouellet are retained the D is thin and lacking over-all size  on the farm ...perhaps the rights to  Edmunston was with this in mind
