This team is going nowhere as long as coaching insists on playing Weber and Staal as if they were still elite.   Perry I can stomach, his high hockey IQ seems to let him get around his skating deficiencies ... but Staal is just brutal, and getting top icetime with two of our best wingers.

Other example both Suzuki and JK have struggled last 20 games, JK however has picked it up huge in the last 5-6 games and gets 2 assists the other night and is still put out as a winger or as a C with bottom pairing wingers.  Suzuki? Nah, just keep throwing him out there with two good players.

I agree Stall should be no more than a 4th line guy

I didn't like the Perry signing but boy has he proved me wrong. He has so much poise and patience and just makes it look easy. Always subtly making the right play. I'd re-sign him to another one year deal if he was interested

no taylor hall and we lost Mete for nothing. Why couldn't we trade him for a pick? It's crazy!

With Armia back we needed that roster spot to keep Staal in the lineup. A 3rd, 5th and Mete. Totally worth it.

I'm very glad we didn't get Hall and other GMs are not as dumb as we may think, Mete for free may be worth it as a space filler but why waste a draft choice on him. Losing Mete makes us better by subtraction and forces us to move on to our prospects. Mete was not an answer to any of our problems on defense. I wish him well in Ottawa.

Who ? Maybe MB tried but no one wanted him at the time .

I suspect Ottawa claimed him 'cause they traded Mike Reilly ( for a 3 rd ) and Braydon Coburn ( for a 7 th )

Agreed. You always want to get SOMETHING back for a player in your organization, but it's not always possible. Mete didn't really bring a whole lot to the NHL squad and it felt like the time to move on from him. Romanov has come in and immediately supplanted him on the depth chart.

Hopefully there will be some other prospects coming along soon that will add more to the Canadiens.

Mete was a 4th round overall pick at #100 - we were fortunate to get some mileage out of him at that level. We always think our players are better than someone else's? Other than Jesper Bratt at the 6th round, nobody lower than Mete achieved much from this draft year, and you have to go up to the top of the 3rd round to find anyone better than Mete in that year. So based on those odds what were the expectations in a solo trade for him - another low level 4th round maybe even a 3rd round pick? Bottom line - he has speed and is so undersized, but he's a #5#6 defenseman on a crappy team so that's why he fit in here. We have tons of #5#6 d-men that can fill his shoes. Mete was not destined for a top level contending team at this stage of his career so I am not surprised Ottawa claimed him because their ownership is cheap!

You could argue that IF we had not added Merrill but with the addition of Merrill there still isn't a roster spot for a prospect. Losing Mete for nothing is moronic, plain and simple. We already had the cap space to add Merrill without waiving Mete so what was the point?

I am not sure anyone would have given anything at all for Mete. he is fairly quick for a Dman and that is about it, he is easy to strip the puck from and never really gave us much offence either.

I think BigTed put it most succinctly:  Great skater, bad defensman.   Kind of hard to work with that. I think he looked ok next to Weber for that year (because Weber himself was still a top pairing dman) and that made a lot of people think he was better than he really was...

IMO he really wasn't given much of a chance as well outside of his rookie season when we absolutely needed LHD. He played well beside Weber but then MB went out and got Alzner, Schlemko, Benn and others which unfairly pushed Mete down the lineup when he couldn't play 3rd pairing he was taken right out of the lineup. Mete is a top 4 or nothing D man, he will never play well on the 3rd pairing. You have to utilize the strengths of your players while mitigating the weaknesses the best you can. Play Mete with Weber and he is good play him with 3rd pairing guys and he can't defend. The issue is he needs a strong positional partner in the top 4 not a defensive specialist on the third pairing where he is going up against primarily checking lines.

We don't know the circumstances but maybe they tried to make a trade but no one needed a bottom pairing D man then Ottawa traded 2 D men away so they needed a body .

Not a big loss, look at Nikita Scherbak, he was claimed off waivers by LA and isnt even in NHL today

It is not a huge loss but is still bad asset management to lose a player for nothing on deadline day. Why didn't we just hang on to Mete and see if a trade developed while still trading for Merrill? We could have just as easily waived Mete after the deadline if nothing else developed.

Ohh yeah let Mete go for free so we can open up a roster spot for the OLD OLD veteran Staal.   I'm seriously very close to just giving up on this team and the dysfunctional leadership they have in place.  From the scouting staff right to the top with ownership it's a constant state of disappointment

I agree, why leave a 22 deeman unprotected, I think he will do really well in Ottawa, What have we given up now for nothing, 4 draft picks and a 22 year old deeman who already has NHL experience. For players that will not help now and will likely be gone after this year and will certainly not be helping in a couple of years.

I think if you have Mete in your top 4, you have issues on D.    Mete is a fringe NHL player.   While he could skate ... his shot wasn't great, he got pushed around on the boards, and his hockey IQ wasn't the greatest.

Mete had nothing to do with a roster spot for Staal  ... one is a forward the other D.   Leskinen took Metes roster spot last game and looked a hell of a lot better than Mete has.    At best losing Mete was to open a sport for Merrill.     And bluntly, Mete's ceiling is "fringe NHLer"

This.  Mete looked pretty good  in his first year because Weber was still able to cover up a lot of flaws in his partner back then.  Since then, nothing really has improved with Mete.  He is a great skater & ... not much else.   It sucks to lose young players yes but he's fallen down the depth chart on this roster & will continue to do so in the next few years.

And as for the draft picks we've lost this week: 5th rounder (Ottawa's) for Merrill,  7th Rounder for Erik Gustafsson, 3rd & 5th for Staal

Im no to too worried about losing 5th and 7th rounders.  Sure the 3rd has a chance of being an NHLer but we still have a ton for the next draft.

Everybody wants to roll the dice for the Cup but only 1 team gets it . Realistically Montreal has an only outside chance at best to go anywhere in the play-offs so losing a fringe prospect and 4 draft picks no better than a third is easy to swallow in trying to shore up their D somewhat. Sometimes the Habs can look unbeatable as a team and as we know sometimes they can look really terrible . Toronto has 5 picks left in the next 2 years worth of drafts : 1 -1st 2 - 2nds a 4th and 5th rounder so another 1st round exit would be devastating to that franchise's future ...  . As for Mete lets see him for what he really is ..I wish him well but probably no one wanted him even as a trade throw-in  .

I would actually say that would be a bad evaluation of Mete. He is a really good skater and acutally not as bad a defender as people think. When he does get beat  usually because of his size - I agree. However the things he does do well help him more then others in the defensive zone. He gets to the puck quicker then any defender on our team. He has a good  outlet pass and see the ice actually quite well.  He was never given an oppurtunity on the PP even though we have struggled for ever.

And just to put things into perspective.

Since 2017. He has the best plus minus of any habs defensemen. +30. Not bad for someone they consider weak defensively and only 22 years old

Player GP P +/-
Victor Mete 185 34 30
Joel Edmundson 38 11 28
Shea Weber 187 102 19
Brett Kulak 147 28 15
Jordie Benn 158 37 13
Alexander Romanov 37 5 6
Noah Juulsen 44 8 6
Mike Reilly 90 23 3
Ben Chiarot 94 26 3
David Schlemko 55 7 2
Marco Scandella 20 3 1
