2021-22 State of the Habs

Thanks for that post Electron58.

Ultimately, as far as I can tell, his punishment was pretty lenient and his suspension from the OHL with possible reinstatement for January 1, 2021 is the first punishment he's experienced from the hockey world.

If he shows growth and learning, I am sure he will be given every chance to play in the OHL (if he wishes to) after his suspension.

Yeah couple of side to every story. what the guy did was wrong we all agree on that! seems that once it was out and the victim reported it he went along with everything and did not try to hide anything he paid the fines that were as per the law over there he screwed up paid for it this should be the end of it. but he is going to end up being a victim of his own crime too which is fitting in some ways but I have a feeling he is going to pay far more than folks who have done far far worse than he has! I an not sure if the league is doing the right thing here, are they now going to judge weather or not someone has the moral fibre to play in their league? do they have the right to do that under our laws? is this the way forward? there is a lot going on here!

Again.  What were the Habs thinking?  Or should I say, What was bergebin thinking, because I'm pretty sure, Molson would NEVER have done this.  Too bad he has to protect bergebin.

Molson has said on record that he knew about the pick before they made it and he gave his blessing prior to drafting what they knew was going to be a very polarizing player.

Good question.

Without going too far into the current situation around social justice, I think part of the reason why we see an uptick in situations like this (i.e. societal/fan pressure applied, media reaction, OHL punishment, etc.) is because the actual real world justice systems have probably been letting people down for a long time.

It's not a stretch to imagine woman feeling let down for many, many years as it relates to sexual assault and harassment against them. We've now reached a stage whereby, if the actual systems of justice won't do their job, social media ends up being an ignition for other means of punishment. Each and every situation warrants specific consideration. And I'm not advocating for additional punishment for Mailloux, but... This is where we've come to as a society.

I still don't know what Mailloux's actual legal punishment in Sweden (was it Sweden?) was.

I suppose the question is whether it’s the hockey worlds place to dole out punishment, or is that what we have real world justice systems for?

yeah I always feel weird about people outside the justice system, where you don't have a court to defend yourself in, deciding punishment for people. If we want to change the justice system, I'm all for it. I'd like to see people given more second chances and not making a capital case out of everything but I'd also like to see more serious punishment for serious crimes. But anyway, whatever it is each of us wants, it should be a political issue that we decide democratically. It's weird to me that other entities get to give out punishment

Wow!  I did not know that! I'm actually,  really, really surprised & disappointed to hear that. If all the teams would have respected LM wish of not drafting him, maybe that would have been punishment enough.  Although,  the OHL is going to want to get their 2 cents in. How does that saying go? Bad news is better than no news? Yeah, I'm kinda thinking that's not the case this summer for bergebin.

People need to lay off Logan, what he did was not all that bad. "no nudity she was an adult not a minor only his team mates saw the photo not millions of people ect" not saying what he did was good but He paid the time for the crime its time to let him live. People that act like they are better than a 17 year old need to take a breather.  we all make mistakes its time to move on. Imagine all the stuff kids do that are not reported on, this is way out of control. we got a really good player out of it lets just support our prospect. Molson also probably saw this to be blown way out of whack and the montreal canadiens did the right move in picking a really good D prospect. Just read the report it really was not all that malicious. Molson knows better than us fans what's good for the team.

I know its the sort of think that SOUNDS worse that it is. Most people believe its somewhere on the internet and will never go away but its notlike that. If this was "revenge porn" I would not be so sympathetic, as that is an absolute cruel thing to do to someone. But its not that, it just sort of sounds like that

It's crap that our two highest draft picks of the last 10 years haven't worked out with us. Galchenyuk and now Kotkaniemi. I feel like we need to do better when drafting #3... My goodness.

I really hope Cole Caulfield turns into a star for us... Since Leblanc, Tinordi, Beaulieu, Galchenyuk, McCarron, Scherbak, Juulsen, Sergachev, and Kotkaniemi aren't helping out our team.

#3 is a high pick but also a crap one! #1 or #2 are the sweet spot!  Lol!

Maybe we'll just tank this season and hit another rebuild. Maybe Bergevin resigns after his contract ends.

No chance we tank.  We are going to surprise a lot of people.

Agreed, we had quite a long stretch where I was constantly scratching my head over our 1st round selections. A couple you have listed didn’t look bad, just didn’t work out. Beaulieu looked promising, just turned out he stunk. Juulsen looked promising, just took to many pucks to the face. I still think we overrate Sergachev because of the circumstances, and I understand that. Really wish we could have seen Drouin and him head to head in the finals, that would have been fun. But the last few years our picks seem to be looking better, with the exception of Kotkaneimi. Nothing against Kotkaneimi, I just never liked the selection. But Poehling, Caufield, Guhle, Maileaux (and from a a draft analysis perspective) Sergachev all look to be much better. As long as they are properly  developed, not rushed into the league, given ice time in Laval, I think we’re looking pretty good. I actually wish we had a rule in place that no prospect gets a taste of pro, not preseason, no first 9 games of the regular season until they are eligible for Laval. And even then, we should really insist on a minimum time spent in Laval before being called up. A standard that’s regardless of whether your 3rd overall or a 3rd rounder. Scotty Bowman’s way. Yzerman seems to follow that strategy, and same goes for Briesbois in Tampa.

Nah , it’s just a different group of prospects that are being hyped as better than the last group of prospects . Time will tell for all of them. Team will be lucky if one or two make the nhl

We could pick FOA, and STILL screw it up. The thing is, the Galchenyuk pick wasn't a bad pick, if you consider the way the Habs screwed around with him. They still turned that pick into a desirable asset, (even though they tried their best to devalue him)  so that in itself makes it a good pick. Obviously, Sergachev was a great pick, but again, the near-sighted Habs didn't give him the same chance as Mete, and sent him down and subsequently traded him during the Russian purge.
