There seems to be quite the movement to lockup young players for potential as part of your core- clearly the Bruins think McAvoy will be part of their core 5-6 players. We have made the move with Suzuki, Anderson, Price, Gallagher and To some extent Petry, Evans , Armia and gulp Savard (ffs) - the latter 4 on 4 year deals. I wonder who our next core D player is as until a few of our prospects show something, we don’t have one , unless traded for.  I’m curious who Morgan Rielly will move to as he is certain to get 5 years and $7.5m or more.

For sure & the philosphy makes sense but at that price they arent getting any favours.  If he had been an UFA this summer im not sure he makes that money so getting it when his team owns his rights is a major overpayment.

Right now he's probably worth $6.5-7  so i could see locking him up for say $8m for 8 years but...

Seeing some of these contracts come out makes me glad that we signed Suzuki when we did and not a week later

Seeing some of these contracts makes me think Kotkaniemi @6M/year maybe isn’t so crazy after all :P

The Seattle Kraken have lost one of their expansion picks to waivers, as Dennis Cholowski has been claimed by the Washington Capitals according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. To make room on the roster, the team has loaned Beck Malenstyn back to the AHL.

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has been suspended one game for roughing Mathieu Joseph of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Friday.

The incident occurred during the second period of Thursday’s game when Larkin was knocked into the boards and retaliated by taking a swing at Joseph. Larkin, who scored the Red Wings’ opening goal in the 7-6 overtime loss, was handed a match penalty while Joseph received two minutes for roughing.

I said that when the contract was signed. It's certainly more than he's worth this year and more than you would want to pay. But if he was really penciled in to be your 2C and you actually gave him that chance to play with Drouin and Anderson the way Dvorak has, then there's a reasonable likelihood he puts up 50 points. If JK shows progression and proves he can play as a a 2C, you're probably looking to give him a long-term deal at 6M+ per season and all you've done is spent a bit more a year early. And if he flops, then you overpaid by 3-3.5M for one single season and you know that. There was no long-term commitment to paying him that money and you'd have had the option to sign him back for much less or trade him and recoup some value.

And Joseph received nothing for hitting from behind 🤦‍♂️

The New York Rangers announced that center Ryan Strome entered the COVID-19 protocol established by the NHL. Though the team chose not to provide a timeline, he’s only unavailable with certainty, for one game. In his place, the club recalled Greg McKegg from their AHL affiliate squad.

The Anaheim Ducks have received some bad news early into the season. John Gibson will be missing at least tonight’s game with a lower-body injury. Anthony Stolarz will draw in. As well, Troy Terry is ill and Max Jones will replace him.

Per head coach Don Granato, of the Buffalo Sabres, both Casey Mittelstadt and Henri Jokiharju will be out for at least a couple of weeks.

Casey Mittelstadt, their top-line centre, left the game with an upper-body injury. Now head coach Don Granato announced defenceman Henri Jokiharju is out with a lower-body injury. Both players will miss a few weeks while treating their injuries. It could be worse, but losing two of their top players will surely hurt the Sabres as they continue the season.

The league will cry when star players are hurt and try to take any hitting out of the game instead going back to having an enforcer who would take care of this crap. Unfortunate for Larking but if the same hit had been on McDavid the other player would have a lengthy suspension.

Technically, Larkin is the Red Wings star player. Just not of the same magnitude, as a McDavid. Tom Wilson never got anything last year, when he threw Panarin around like a ragdoll.  That's why the Rangers went out and got Reaves. It's like the Red Wing coach said, the players think they have to start enforcing things themselves. Nobody seems to want to step in for their teammates. I will give Ben Chiarot & Joel Edmundson full credit for standing up for their teammates.

Marc-Andre Fleury‘s latest return to Pittsburgh didn’t last too long as the former Penguins goalie was pulled 11 minutes into the first period.

Fleury allowed four goals on 10 shots before the Chicago Blackhawks decided to put in backup Kevin Lankinen.

I guess Chicago is another team having their problems.
