Habs not extending him during the season. I'm getting the impression that Bergevin no longer wants to be here.

A friend of mine told me he wants to GM in LA, no idea where its coming from though. But he did also say, he would "honour the last year of his contract" and now this. Doesn't sound good to me.

The only people that likely know are MB and Molson.

Lots of speculation but most seem to believe he wants to stay - but wants more than what the team is offering him - and so the "will honour the contract" line is a bluff.  Like "dont value me & I'll leave"

The other rumour is that he is looking for a "president of hockey operations" title instead of GM.

Its possible he wants to go to California but I know of no ties there, so I would be surprised if that was his ultimate goal.

Well, Molson said that as a young owner, he's not looking for a president of hockey operations.  He just hired France Margaret Bélanger as the President of Sports and Entertainment of Groupe CH.

If he stays and does good work then good if he leaves good I want a guy who wants to be here and if he is playing games right now I want him gone as I see it as him putting himself ahead of the team something he does not like in his players so.......

He's starting to show who he really is. He is putting himself above the team. He has that "his way or the highway" mentality.  Who knows, he may have given Molson a take it or leave it offer. I say, time to part ways with bergebin. Promote Ducharme and bring back Bouchard. That was the original plan.

Good riddance.  I feel he has generally improved over his time here, and he's definitely made some really good moves that I've got to give him credit for, but for the most part I don't see him as doing a substantially better job than the average GM.  Certainly not enough to justify a giant pay raise, if that's what he's holding out for.

I mean when we're talking about a guy who played hard ball with our players so often, I'm not really inclined to give in to any big demands that he's putting forward.

See I still think he's the best GM we've had in almost 30 years and I'd say like a top 5 GM in the league. I also think its going to be an embarassment if he chooses a different team, it makes us look like a second class organization... and really maybe that's what we are now

MB has kind of grown on me over the years. He did a lot of good things at the beginning, followed that up by a whole lot of questionable moves, and most recently he's been slightly trending upwards again I think. I disagree with a lot of things he has done but there's also no denying that he's pulled off several very good/excellent moves, especially as far as trades.

It's always the same question though, who's a suitable replacement? It's usually slim pickings given the bilingual requirement and I'm not sure who can be considered a clear-cut upgrade right now.

In my opinion, the guy who really has to go is Timmins. Its so hard to judge scouts, and he does well rounds 2 to 7 but man oh man have we drafted poorly in the first round. I know few agree with me but I'm really worried about the future of this team if MB leaves

Maybe so, but isn't the GM responsible for hiring and firing? Doesn't he get the blame for putting together the staff responsible for drafting and player development? I think this is one of the areas where he's failed as a GM personally (among others). I won't lose any sleep over his walking away, but i do worry about the replacement, same as Ted. I view it as a chance to improve, if Molson takes it seriously. His not having a deal in place with MB by now leads me to think that he has another plan in the works. Let's hope it's a winning one.

Lets face it MB has been a brutal GM.  Last year was a total fluke, don't think anyone can argue otherwise.  MB has given out some really bad contracts but has been saved by a few very lucky deals IMO.  I for one wouldn't upset to see him shown the door

And yes agree 100% Timmons and his entire staff should be sent packing as well

found this which I find difficult to believe

Since Bergevin took over as general manager, the team played 234 games, including this season, recording 141 wins (141-68-25) and posting a . 656 winning percentage in the regular season, placing the Canadiens fourth in the NHL and first in the Eastern conference.

That's obviously a very old stat. In his first 5 years alone the team would have played over 400 games at 82 a season

Also, those stats were from an inherited team(players) It's gone down hill since.

I don't see how the replacement can be better. He has to be french speaking, that's the reality. And I've said in the past many criticisms of MB that are made and I think are valid can be made about most GMs/coaches maybe as much as like 90% of them.

Promote Ducharme and bring back Bouchard. That was the original plan.

Could this be referring to playoff games? Seems kind of high though for that. I guess the other logical explanation is that the article might be from his early days as Habs GM.

They would have had to go deep in the playoffs every year to reach that number, and bergebin will NEVER reach that number with the Habs. He's lucky to just get the Habs INTO the playoffs,  without devine intervention.

After extensive research (I had to go to Wikipedia,  of all places) The Habs, played in 72 games in the playoffs,  but that includes the "play in" games. So.....

The Leafs in that time is 40.

Yeah that makes a lot more sense lol

Also nice to see the Habs at almost double the Leafs over the same timeframe LOL

He's definitely grown on me. There are certain things I think he does well and others I really dont like.  Like others have said, i wont lose sleep over losing him but Im also not sure his replacement will be any better (could be worse) than him.

Its really tough to know. We've had a lot of bad luck in the first round too.  Many of the times we've picked in the top 15 have ended up being fairly weak drafts...

I have a hard time forming an opinion on Timmins since im not entirely sure how much control he has over who we draft.

People say this kind of stuff a lot but how can we criticize him for the bad things he's done & then say his good moves are all lucky or a fluke?  Im not the biggest MB fan by any stretch but he's made good trades, good contracts and good overall moves.  He's made plenty of bad ones too but if im going to be critical of his bad ones I have to give him credit for his good.

If you believe Dale Weise - and he's a pretty straight shooter - Bouchard is not the guy we'd actually want in that situation. It sounds like despite his great media sound bytes, Bouchard is actually very tough on players - he plays heavy favourites and Weise called him "tortorella light."

Now, im sure Weise has some resentment & the truth is probably somewhere in between the two but as a few of these types of reports have come out lately I dont think losing him was the worst thing that could have happened.
