Atlanta picks off five passes by Drew Brees enroute to a 23-13 win over the Saints. After building a 17-0 lead, the Falcons were unable to get a first down and got only 283 yards against the league's worst defense (they're last in total defense and against the run) and one that was on pace to give up record yardage.

Today the Kansas City Chiefs experienced a tragedy when 25 year linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and turned the gun on himself in front of the head coach and general manager in the Arrowhead Stadium parking lot. The motive for the murder-suicide is unclear at this point. Belcher had played in all 11 games so far this season. The NFL league office advised the Chiefs opponent, the Carolina Panthers, to continue to Kansas City for tomorrow's game scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Eastern time.

The murder-suicide resulted from an argument in a Kansas City neighborhood. Belcher encountered Chiefs' staff thanking them for all they had done for him. The staff had attempted to prevent Belcher from committing additional acts of violence before Belcher turned the gun on himself. He played 59 games in four season with the Chiefs and had started every game this season. The Chiefs-Panthers game will be played as scheduled.

I'm still in shock over what happened in Kansas City.

I'm a little surprised they didn't at least cancel today's game.

Hard to deal with a death at any time, but when it's in a manner like this... Wonder what the mental state of his teammates are today.

There's a feeeling the Chiefs did the right thing in playing the game as scheduled just from the people I talked to. Carolina players were saying that while they felt for the Chiefs they had a job to do and the they were preparing to win and Kansas City wouldn't have expected any less.

Kansas City stepped up, in the words of quarterback Brady Quinn, and won 27-21.

Defensive lapses by the Lions at the end of the game, including failure to even spot Colts receiver Donnie Avery on a crossing route give Indianopolis a 35-33 win over Detroit. Avery's 14 yard pass reception came on the final play of the game and after quarterback Andrew Luck slipped away from the Lions' pass rush and spotted Avery wide open at the 9. Avery ran the remaining 9 yards untouched to give Indianapolis the win.

It also didn't help the Lions' pass rush couldn't make the needed stops when it mattered most. There was also the failure of the offense to finish off drives and had to settle for field goals. Detroit also became the first team to blow leads in three straight games with two minutes left in regulation since San Diego back in 2000 and the first do it in three straight home games since at least 1983.

Detroit rookie wide receiver Ryan Broyles will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL ligament though not the same joint he tore at Oklahoma. His loss leaves the Lions dangerously thin at wide receiver as Titus Young has been sent home a second time and is not expected back by the Lions's staff.

Greg McElroy comes off the bench to lead the New York Jets to a 7-6 win over the Arizona Cardinals after starter Mark Sanchez had thrown two interceptions. The only reason for that was second quarterback Tim Tebow was out with broken ribs, otherwise he would have been sent. That would have been a joke since Tebow isn't exactly an NFL quarterback. It does raise a debate as to whether McEroy should be the starter instead of Sanchez.

Detroit wide receiver Titus Young is to have knee surgery unless he doesn't show up for it - in the words of head coach Jim Swartz. Young is likely on permanent exile from the Lions for agitating coaches by lining up in the wrong positition multiple times against Green Bay and reportedly on purpose.

Detroit plays at Green Bay tonight at 8:20 P.M. Aaron Rogers will likely have his way against a thin Detroit secondary and the Green Bay defense will likely have its way against a dangerously thin Lions receiving corps. Worst of all, the Lions have been finding ways to lose games in the final minutes.

Defensive lapses, thin secondary and receiving corps send the Lions to a 27-20 loss to Green Bay. After scoring on their first two drives for a 14-0 lead, Detroit could not move the ball effectively and managed only two field goals by Jason Hanson. A 43 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Mike Daniels got the Packers started on their comeback. The Lions also allowed a 27 yard touchdown by Aaron Rodgers when he should have been sacked. Last night's loss was the third straight in which Detroit has blown a 10 point lead, a record they share with six other teams. Green Bay has also won 22 straight home games against the Lions, the longest current streak in the NFL.

Everyone really needs to watch this story, about JJ Watt of the Houston Texans taking in a orphan family after their auto accident which left their parents dead. Watt has taken these kids in and befriended them. A class act if ever there was one.

Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue vacates the suspensions of four current and former Saints players in the bounty scandal. He did, however, find three of the players engaged in conduct detrimental to the league. Scott Fujita was cleared of any charges. Not surprisingly, Drew Brees congratulated the players on being vacated of any suspensions.

A further note on the bounty scandal: Tagliabue also said the players engaged in a performance pool that rewarded key plays that could merit fines. He also stressed that Saints coaches were very much involved engaging in a deliberate, unprecendented, and effective effort to obstruct the NFL's investigation.

Detroit plays at Arizona at 4:05 P.M. The Lions may have a chance against the worst offense in the league, last in points scored and in rushing offense. And also against a team that has lost nine in a row after a 4-0.start. Detroit, however, isn't taking this game for granted, viewing the Cardinals as a team setting their own sights on the Lions.
