Not bad actually, Patches should be worth more on the open market but I expected us to get less given how badly MB handled this from the start.

Tatar is okay and Suzuki seems interesting. We need skilled centers, so I'm generally fine with the deal, but isn't it funny that it took MB 6 freaking years to finally double-down on the most glaring hole this team has?

Also, didn't McPhee just acquire Tatar for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounder at the deadline?

As for "skilled" centres - Suzuki is great defensively but not a great skilled guy from what I remember.  Tatar has been playing wing for a while, no?

Yeah, sorry I didn't mean Tatar – I was referring to the most recent draft and now acquiring another center in Suzuki.

Ar you sure about Suzuki projecting as a shutdown guy? He finished 4th in OHL scoring last season, which may not mean much in the long run but certainly shows that he's got some offense.

Yeah sorry I got him (Suzuki) mixed up with a different prospect, lol.  My memory is going in my old age. :P

I take back my original thought - this may be a better return than i initially thought.    Curious to see if Tatar is flipped or if he stays on the roster.  I suppose he may get moved back to centre?

Drouin - Tatar - Danault - Plekanec  ?

Wow, so basically McPhee paid a 1st rounder, 2x 2nd rounders, a 3rd rounder, and Nick Suzuki for ~30 games of Tomas Tatar and possibly 1 season of Max Pacioretty? Seems a little steep... but could turn out okay if Pacioretty resigns and regains his scoring touch, which I fully expect. Looks like they've found their replacement for James Neal.

Not a big fan of Tatar to be honest, so I wouldn't mind trading him again.

I mean he's not horrible.  27, $5m cap hit till he's 30,  good for 20g, 45-50pts.  Nothing to sneeze at. At least he's not 34 with grit or something.

I can see Julien liking him a lot to be honest.   I would be fine flipping him too if thats an option.

I expect Pacioretty to regain his touch too.  I am not sure if he will resign there though. Thats a tough one. I mean we have no idea obviously but the sense I get is that he had a very small list of teams he was interested in signing an extension with.

For sure, I don't mean to be overly negative. I've watched him a little in Detroit and he's a useful player, we need scoring so including him makes sense. If another team was willing to pay what Vegas did at last year's deadline, I'd pull the trigger without ever looking back though.

Yeah, tough to say. I think he actually likes it in the East and Vegas is... well... VERY different from Montreal. Let's see, I wish him nothing but the best though. He didn't deserve all the crap that was being piled on him. Good guy, not ideal as a Captain maybe but still an elite scorer who was massively underrated around here IMO.

Yeah I was gonna say, Suzuki had 100P this year in the OHL!

I'm pleasantly surprised, disappointing return in the grand scheme of things and a sad end to his career in Montreal, but given the circumstances Suzuki is a great return and Tatar is a serviceable middle 6 guy with some goal scoring ability.

Agreed, I expected less given the circumstances. It essentially comes down to a pretty good prospect, a decent roster player and an okay draft pick for Pacioretty on an expiring contract. Not sure we could have done much better at the deadline, plus there's the added risk of Pacioretty underperforming or possibly being injured, so I'm fine with the deal.

Habs retain 10% of Max' salary for this season, LV retains 10.6% of Tatar's salary for the next 3 years. So Habs get Tatar for 500k cheaper for years 2 and 3.

Given the circumstances, the trade isn't bad. You just wish MB hadn't painted himself into a corner the way he did and the return probably would have been better (namely, I feel like that pick would have been a 1st rounder).

One added benefit to the trade not being discussed: without Pacioretty, the Habs have almost zero pure goal scoring and mainly set-up men left up front. This probably helps the tank more than if Max played 2/3 of the year here, and as such, maybe it helps the odds of getting Hughes.

Terrible trade, I've watched the Wings a long time and Tatar has been on the decline for a long time. He didn't even crack Vegas line up during most of the playoffs. I imagine Max will probably explode playing with Vegas. I wouldn't be surprised to him hit 40. Great trade for Vegas I didn't like the Chucky trade but at least Domi has upside , this trade is horrible.

Absolutely, I don't think Suzuki is ready this season and going from Pacioretty to Tatar is definitely a downgrade that pushes us closer to the 1st OVA pick.

Seeing as their annual golf tournament takes place today (I believe), I wonder if MB pulled out all the stops to complete a deal asap and avoid further disctractions/questions regarding Pacioretty...

The Suzuki kids seems super interesting. 100 points in the OHL. That's nothing to sneeze at. Most of his assists have been primary, so he's not being dragged around on someone else's coattails.

Yeah, he also has like +30 points on the team's 2nd best scorer in the regular season. Playoff numbers look a little different though. Definitely an intriguing prospect, maybe he's Laval-bound this season?

Terrible Trade?   This is a good trade in my opinion. The best he's made so far (and yes it wouldn't take to much) Now we have two really good prospects for (FUTURE CENTER).  This trade is not about this season. The habs are going no where this year. So get some prospects and hope for a very good draft pick again next year. This is going in the right direction But with MB the possibility is always there to screw that up as well.

The comments I see here show me that none of you buy tickets to games. WHO? and I mean WHO is going to pay some of the highest prices for tickets in the NHL to watch a team that couldn't compete in the minors? With Max gone we lose more goal scoring so it is obvious that either MB is doing this on purpose so that Molson can sell the team (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sell the team, you have done enough damage). Last year you could see the empty seats (of course HABS TV won't show you that). This year I bet you couldn't give away the tickets. I won't be spending any money for this "team". It appears that the move to the Bell center has not done anything but line Molson's pockets. This trade frees up more cap space in that they won't have to negotiate with Max for a new deal that will see him get at least $6M a season. Price is a good goalie (best years are behind him), but he can't score any goals, so even if he spins on his head MTL will be in the basement again this year. No NHL Center Ice for me, and NO trips to the Bell center either. NOT WORTH my time or my money.

Ok looking at this trade as a good thing is optimistic. Your trading size and skill of a first line winger for a so so 2nd line winger at best and 2 unknowns. Hope the unknowns work out but Suzuki isn't even proven at the AHL level. MB totally screwed the pooch on this one, if your going to trade Pacioretty forthe 2 picks at least get a decent winger back.

No idea, but I'm happy to have acquired him! Tatar is the throw-in, as far as I'm concerned. He'll probably put up 40-45 points with us. At 27 years old, he probably still has some decent productive years left in him. I'm quite happy to acquire a 2nd round draft choice and Suzuki.
