Dave Pagnotta on Sportsnet going further now and saying the Habs have had significant trade discussions with Winnipeg for Laine. Also says Laine's camp is hoping for a contract in the range of 10M AAV. Not sure he's worth that, but I think an AAV of 8M for 7 years would be a good compromise.

As far as trade return goes, I think Drouin has to be a guy they're discussing. It gives Winnipeg a scoring winger back but at a cheaper cost. Laine is obviously a better commodity than Drouin given he's a better goal-scorer and younger, but with the contracts likely being in Drouin's favor, I wouldn't see the overall compensation as having to be too much more. I wonder if something like Drouin + Hudon + 1st would be enough, or Drouin, Hudon, Juulsen, and a 1st. Otherwise, the Habs could theoretically offer-sheet a 10M 5 year deal and it would be 2 1st's, a 2nd, and a 3rd... I think Winnipeg would be happier with the player compensation above in terms of getting NHL players in on cheaper contracts though. They need bodies to fill their line-up.

Problem is if we give Drouin Hudon and Juulsen we now create a hole on the Left side of the top 6. I hate doing that to fill out the right side but I know we do have an abundance of filler wingers so not as bad as other moves.

If Drouin left (no pun intended), we would still have these players as left wing options:
Tatar
Byron
Lehkonen
Poehling
Cousins
Weise ahem
And possibly Domi if he's moved off C, and Kotkaniemi if he's moved off C

I don't think MB is eager to get rid of Drouin, but if he's the main piece for Laine, then so be it.

Perhaps:
Kotkaniemi/Domi-Kotkaniemi/Domi-Laine
Tatar-Daault-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Poehling-Armia
Byron-Thompson-Weal

This is exactly what I was saying it's not Ideal to move either Domi or KK off centre especially if you are developing KK to be your #1 C but the hole can be filled rather easily but not ideally.

IF we got Laine my preferred lines would be

Lehkonen-Kotkaniemi-Laine

Tatar-Domi-Gallagher

Hudon-Poehling-Suzuki

Byron-Danault-Armia

But Lehkonen right now is not ideally a top line winger. I really like the 2nd line though cause I feel that would just wear out opponents. I also think Suzuki will start the year in Laval so you have to move Armia up a line and add Weal to the 4th line. Of course all of this hinges on IF 1 we get Liane 2 we resign Lehkonen, Armia, Hudon and McCarron and 3 Drouin is part of the package to hat Laine.

One more point no trade can be made for Laine until the Aho situation is resolved cause if we tie all our money up then I could totally see the Canes just out of spite allow Aho to go thus voiding his contract to us cause we don't have the cap space

Posted on RDS that Pierre Lebrun says Hudon has been traded to the Minnesota Wild for a 4th round pick... can anyone verify if this is true or not?

Sorry about this... I misread this comment which actually meant "should have" rather than "did"... my bad :5141:

Was it rumored that he might be on his way to Minnesota or was it just speculated/recommended by someone in the media? I'm guessing it was just Pierre Lebrun was just saying it might be a good destination or something?

The Athletic suggesting that a reasonable price for Gusev would be something like a 2nd round pick and a B level prospect, which seems like a reasonable gamble to make if you're MB. We have an extra 2nd rounder from the Shaw trade, and a B level prospect could be someone like Evans, Hudon, Ikonen, Fleury, etc... we don't know whether Gusev will actually play in the NHL, but his upside is rumored to be in the range of Panarin offensively, so it certainly seems like it could be worth a gamble.

If that's the ask, then... yeah, I am calling Vegas immediately.

Sabres acquire Jokiharju from Chicago for Alex Nylander. Buf now has a heap of RHD, further fueling speculation they will trade Ristolainen shortly.

What the he'll is Chacago doing now they only have 2 NHL quality RHD and 1 AHL RHD. There's your trading partner we give them Juulsen for Gustafsson.

I think we would regret trading Brook in a major way. I honestly think he's got the most potential out of any of our dmen not in the NHL right now, including Romanov. May take him longer but in 3-4 years I think he's going to be our anchor on the blueline.

Yeah I corrected it to Juulsen cause I would rather keep Brook

Vegas is reportedly trying to get Gusev to sign for just $2 million AAV over the next two seasons, whereas the player wants double the money for the same term. As such, George McPhee is considering a trade to make his roster work, meaning Gusev’s first real NHL contract would be someone else’s responsibility.

That term works for us. We don't need money until 2 year from now

I'd be willing to take a chance on Gusev. I mean, heck, we're not going to use the cap space for anything else. He could prove to be a good offensive addition. Maybe something like Anaheim's fourth rounder in 2020 and Chicago's third rounder in 2021 could work.

I am not sure that would be enough, I would be willing to go as high as say Hudon + 2nd in 2020. They could easily sign Hudon who is still a top 9 player and get a decent pick plus shed that cap space.

Yeah there's definitely a few options out there for a forward that shouldnt really cost us any players.  Gusev, an UFA like Dzingel or even putting in an offer sheet to someone like Puljujarvi (compensation for like a $4m deal is pretty tiny & Edmonton is up against the cap). So we need to trust our pro scouts to find the right fit for our needs. Kevin Labanc is another player that is under the radar but may be attainable for a $5m offer sheet.  I think thats the only type of OS that wont be matched. Any player worth $8m+ is going to get matched imho.

The bigger hole remains that #1LD. I just cant believe MB thinks his defense is good enough the way it sits right now.

Labanc signed a few days ago for $1 million for 1 year.

AH I missed that. What a crazy low deal! I guess he's banking on having an even better year next year so he can cash in.

Yeah. I was reading an article that was blown away with that deal. They were saying he's much better than that deal, but... I guess the guy loves San Jose and is banking on himself doing well this season. Or... Maybe he has a really, really bad agent.
