Poehling has never been a prolific scorer on any level ..I see him as a 3rd liner with a bit of jam and a decent player defensively . You can't say Suzuki is languishing on the 3rd or 4th lines and that's because he has lots of offensive capabilities and is a decent defensive player as well as getting his share of PP and PK time .

The needs for the future are goal scoring as I have some confidence that the defense can improve with Fleury, Romanov (hoping he signs)  Jordan Harris,  Josh Brook, Matthias Norlinder, Jayden Struble in the pipeline to fit with some of our roster

where it is cloudy is after Cole Caufield, we have playmakers - Cam Hillis, Cole Fonstad, Jesse Ylonen and a couple of others so would like this draft to get shooters

JK, Suzuki are playmakers with Domi. I would like to think Gallagher and Drouin can provide supplemental goals maybe with Lehks or Armia. Not sure I would give up a shooter like Tatar and Petry still provides some goals from the defense.

I long for a Leclair type or Kovalev to fill nets with pucks

Should be

Lose 8 thanks to uncle Nate

But to be honest it wasn't just Nates fault why was he even on the ice with Gally anyway? We're Weal and Cousins busy?

Could have been a line change and the play turned towards the Oilers net.

At this point to be honest I don't think Caulfield is exactly a shoo-in to be a consistent goal scorer in the NHL . It's true he has scored at every level but the AHL and NHL are a different ball-game . I hope he becomes what we need but a Martin St Louis rarely happens and his size is the reason he wasn't picked earlier despite being the most prolific goal scorer at last year's the draft . Gallagher is 2 inches bigger and probably 20 lbs heavier and Cole won't even come near matching his grit (or for that matter Byron) . Even Desharnais was a tough kid for his size . I hope he proves  naysayers wrong but I  have some question marks on this one . That being said he's our best chance going forward in the "finisher" category given the present line-up . With the almost certain demise of this year's campaign Montreal hopefully will be turning some assets into more draft picks at the trade deadline and the 2020 Draft . The question for me is will Bergevin and Co. then combine multiple picks together with roster players and or / middle of the road prospects  here or there to acquire 3 or 4 young players with up-side who can play immediately as long as they can get around the NMC 's. There is a decent core of players on this club .Along with the maturation of guys like Suzuki and JK this team will be better off sooner than later . I expect Romanov will make the club next year unless the KHL offers him ridiculous money ( and that could happen ) ...perhaps it really is time to unload guys on the dark side of 30 and use the cap money on a difference maker ….a Hall comes to mind

# 1 LHD has  been an issue for years . Management is betting that Romanov is the guy . Good luck .

As Weber and Petry get older , RHD is going to be an issue . The guys above I have never heard of .

Pretty soon , if not already the entire D is going to be one big mess

Just some random thoughts:

1) We've let 6 more goals in than we've scored, and we're in 26th.  That's crazy.

2) I think we're getting to watch some pretty good hockey AND we may just get a top 10 pick...that's not a bad outcome for this year actually.

3) I really think we need to move Weber while his value is high...some team will pay for him as they go all in for the Cup.

4) Hopefully we can move many of our expiring contracts for late picks / prospects: Kovalchuk, Thompson, Weise, Peca, maybe even Scandella and then resign him in the offseason as a UFA.

I agree, we haven't really played bad hockey and most games we've lost could easily have gone the other way. Maybe that's just the oft-cited parity around the league but when I watch the guys play, I certainly don't see a bottom 5 team. I also don't see a contender though and that pretty much leaves us in no-man's land with a bunch of other teams. When fully healthy, we can give the top teams a run for their money but it also doesn't take much for us to collapse and start bleeding odd-man rushes and high-danger scoring chances. We still have the same glaring holes MB has failed to adress for years so we're still going in circles. I really like how some of the kids are coming along but we absolutely need more skill/talent to be able to compete consistenly without the wheels falling off once adversity hits.

If you look around the top teams every contender has a finisher goal scorer - Stamkos, Pasternak, Ovevchkin, Crosby- Malkin, Kane -Toews when they were up there, Matthews, Barzal, Seguin-Benn, Laine Connor, MacKinnon. Maybe the Blues last year were light with Tsaresenko
They are tough to find and I share the concerns on Caufield but I’m less concerned about LHD - it’s been a massive dry spell since we’ve had a consistent 30 plus goal scorer(s) who can flip the occasional game - we get behind 1 even 2 goals and the percentages are so low that we can come back

it’s time for shooters With some moderate skating - Gorniak, Evans, Barber, Vjdermo, and Mcshane don’t cut it. We’ve been horrible in that drafting capability

We lead the league in shots per game yet we are hopelessly behind the rest of the league. Is it a talent thing that our players just cant shoot precise enough or is it mainly a gameplay problem because we mainly play style that relies on a lot of shots from everywhere in the hope of rebounds?

We've now had two of the longest losing streaks in team history in less than two months. That's brutal and embarrassing for the organization. If there's anything indicative of Bergevin's failures... Well, there you go. If we lose two more games on this current losing streak it will be the second longest losing streak in team history at 10 games.

Surely we'll beat Ottawa tomorrow and the end the streak, though, right? RIGHT:ph34r:

To be honest I really hope we don't, I feel like we should embrace the fact we are missing the playoffs and in reality a high pick from a NEW GM with some clue as to how to draft could be what we need to reboot this team.  We have a ton of picks in this years draft, lets just hope MB and his poor scouting staff are not on board to use any of them

Yeah. To be honest, I am reveling in the failure. I'm so sick of Bergevin being at the helm of this organization and taking us nowhere, I just keep hoping that the constant failure will eventually be enough for Molson to make a change. Would love to see the team win the lottery and get the first overall pick, too.

Must say I was really disappointed this morning when I woke up to find out that both MB and CJ have their jobs still. What is it going to take to get these guys out of here! On a more positive note, The University of Wisconsin Badgers are ranked 33rd in the NCAA so shouldn't make the playoffs and will allow Caufield to be signed near the middle of March

IMO, nothing will be done until at least the All Star weekend, as it gives management time to find someone else, and that's "if" changes might be made.

Those two streaks combined for 16 losses, not may teams can come back from that even good ones. i have been thinking about this since last year and i can't put my finger on why but i am pretty sure the main issue is the coach. now don't get me wrong i am no fan of MB but as soon as CJ  got here our power play took a dump and has never really got back on form. CJ has an ok system and is better than MT  by leaps and bounds especially with the players but i think his system is killing our offensive creativity, his desire to sit on leads and play safe is too predictable and we just don't have a team that can play shutdown hockey which is what is his comfort zone. we are hurting right now but i don't think this roster is as bad as this i agree with most we should be at least a bubble team not the joke we have been for the last few weeks. i really don't know who is out there that would get the job done as coach but i think we will find out pretty soon as we can't keep losing if we want to keep our players on track especially the young guns, i think KK is getting confused about what he is supposed to be kind of like what happened to Galchenyuk and that whole gang of rookies we destroyed, the only reason Gallagher pulled through is he is a tough one who plays super hard and every coach loves that. In the short term at least i would put Timmins in charge and get a good young coach with some fresh idea's who is not afraid to play some rookies and play a modern system, we may be better than it looks we could just be playing the wrong game from another era.
