Leskinen called up to the taxi squad (Ouellet and Olofsson sent down to Laval).

Will be interesting to see if he gets any games. By all accounts he's been the best Rocket defenseman all year as his defensive game has finally caught up to his offensive abilities - that was always the knock, that he was good offensively but poor defensively but it looks like Joel Bouchard's hard work with him is starting to pay off.

Curious to see if he gets any games. I think Mete is still on the hotseat so its quite possible.

Mind you, i dont think third pair is really our issue right now...

I don’t see him playing barring injury. He’s been good. Not great.

they are all steady and good in Laval. No one is exceptional.

the best dman are playing with the big club. It’s that easy.

So who gets the right side in Gallys place?

my bet is Toffoli. That is the best line going right now. Has been for a month. Back to a clear number one.

perjaos that changes with Gally out. He was playing so good and had heated up. The whole line had. Darn shame.

I think tofolli draws in for a look. Especially now that we see the coach is willing to split the Suzuki line up. Which should ha e been done awhile ago. Imo.

I agree.  I think it will be Tofu. So, Tatar, Danault, & Toffoli. Perry, Suzuki, & Anderson, Drouin, Staal, & Frolic/Evans, Byron, KK, & Lehkonen. Not sure what the cap implications are with Frolik, but I imagine with Gally's injury we should have some relief?

Kotkaniemi has been our best centerman for the past two months. Odd that he gets moved to wing to accommodate Eric Staal. Not to say he won't have success there, but I can't stand when the Habs mess up the development of their young guys to favor the veterans. JK has been doing really well at face-offs and positioning and creating offence from the center spot, and then he gets dropped to the 4th line and then moved to wing. We're starting down the Lars Eller/Alex Galchenyuk path here again. Why can't they just keep Danault as the 3C and Staal as the 4C/wing instead?

Hmm. A lot of that could change if Armina is ready too.

id prefer to see a fourth line of Perry, Staal, and Armia. I think that could work very nice.

that said, it seems JK and Lehkonen were the odd one out at the end of last game. They didn’t play the last ten minutes in the 2-2 game with Gally out earlier, They simply rolled three lines near the end of the game.

i Am surprised JK is deemed the fourth line centre. He seems to be playing so well. But he does not do as well in his own zone coverage on D. And that’s big. But neither does Drouin. And Anderson isn’t so great at that either.

And the thing is, with their age, guys like Staal and Perry are exactly the guys you want to be playing 4th line minutes!   I mean we all love what Perry has been bringing but lets face it most games he's invisible except on the plays he capitalizes on.  Staal is the same - both uber elite superstars in their prime, now in the twilight of their careers. If you have the luxury of playing them on your 4th line & using them on the PP then thats great! Why look for them to suddenly defy age & be top 6 players again?  Sure, they might be ok for patches but overall you're going to be way better if those two have time management & are not looked upon to eat lots of minutes.

I agree with the Lars Eller thingy, but Galchenyk ?? come on you have to give that one up. Glachenyk, made his own bed. over and over and over, he was a complete fail. It had nothing to do with where he played and everything to do with how he played.

I am certainly with you on the KK being moved to the wing. He has been developing nicely this year. Why move a young player like that. Makes no sense

So true - JK has been doing really well at face-offs and positioning and creating offence from the center spot, and then he gets dropped to the 4th line and then moved to wing -silly silly coaching.

I can get behind that 100%

Me too and who knows,,,, we could eventually go there,,, but i doubt they plant Staal on the 4th until he goes through a slow patch. That goal last game probably guaranteed him a couple weeks higher up in the lineup.

If I were making lines right now and Armia were healthy, I'd go with

Toffoli-Suzuki-Anderson

Drouin-Kotkaniemi-Armia

Tatar-Danault-Lehkonen

Byron-Staal-Perry

I like it!

I think Danault has been the best for well over a month now. Unquestionably.

The D is a mess. Edmundson-Weber has been bad but Petry has also been horrible the past 3 games. So there isn't much going right for the Habs on the back end right now. I think it's time to move back to Edmundson-Petry, so I'd try

Edmundson-Petry

Kulak-Weber

Romanov-Mete

Very clear need for a top 4 D man here.

Kulak didn't look very good tonight.  Nor Edmundson.  Actually,  they all stunk.

LOL.

That's the difference between getting more easy minutes versus harder minutes game in and game out.

Maybe people realize now that Charriot is better than most think around here.

Its going to be interesting to see what they do now.  Merrill and Gustafsson in quarantine, Chairot coming back soon, Leskinen on the Taxi squad...

When everyone is available, they will basically have the following to choose from:  Weber, Petry, Edmundson, Kulak, Merrill, Gustafsson, Chairot, Leskinen & Ouellet

Despite Leskinen looking good last game, I think he's going to be on the outside looking in.  Imho Chairot gets into the top 6 when healthy. I think thats fine, I think he's one of our best 6 but imho he's #5-6 and im worried they will play him with Weber again.  I think Merrell is going to be the guy to get 3rd pair (next to romanov) both are LD but both play RD as well.

So what im expecting is:

Weber-Chairot
Edmundon-Petry
Merrell-Romanov

Kulak, Gustafsson will be extras, Leskinen will go back to laval.

That said, there are some interesting variables right now (and ive been pleasantly surprised with how they've been using Kulak) .  I havent followed Merrell closely but my friends who have (and scouting reports) make him sound like your "not so average" defensive defenseman. Its like he's a non-offensive puck moving dman.   That would possibly work next to Weber.

Kulak-Petry
Merrell-Weber
Romanov-Edmundson

Might not be horrible.  Wont happen of course because at least 1 (most likely both) of Edmundson/Chairot will be in the top 4, you can bank on it.

Gustafsson is the real question mark here.   He's defensively porous but would he be just the right sort of compliment to Weber?  I actually think there's a possibility that pairing works, especially if you push them to the 2nd pair:

Edmundson/Kulak - Petry
Gustafsson - Weber
Chairot-Romanov

Will be interesting to see what they do. Probably something we'll curse. lol

I agree Weber/Chariot eat up a lot of the tougher minutes helping pairing like Edmonton/Petry , Kulak/Romanov. Look at the difference in Petry's game since Chariot being out. Kulak looked better with Chariot in the line up also, because of easier matchups.

Hard not to keep Edmonson/Petry together as well as it worked earlier this season. Also Kulak isn't near as consistent. I could see Weber/Chariot and then possibly Weber/Gustsfsson in different games situations.

1. Kulak is still a better defenceman than Edmundson and he's way better than Chiarot. Just because it wasn't as easy for Kulak next to Petry, he still performed well and he's still a better complement to Weber than either slow-moving alternative. People cite Petry's offensive numbers as having dropped with Kulak compared to Edmundson but let's also remember a few things:

- Kulak-Petry was being used as a #1 pairing whereas Edmundson-Petry was used as a #2 behind Chiarot-Weber.

- Petry and Weber are "older" players and always seem to do better at the start of the season and when rested. There has been natural drop-off in performance from Petry mid-season every year.

- Half of Petry's points when paired with Edmundson at ES came on the PP, so not all of this has to do with who he's paired with at ES.

- Many of Petry's most productive games came against Vancouver and their wide open style of play, and we finished all our games against them.

That said, I also favor putting Edmundson-Petry back together, as I posted above. I think it frees up Kulak to play elsewhere (such as next to Weber).

2. Chiarot didn't fare well next to Weber as a 1st pairing no matter how you judge anyone else in that role. You still can't go back to that, even though it's likely the Habs do. I think all we've learned is that the Habs don't have a first-pairing LHD, which we kind of suspected all along. Chiarot is still best-suited to a 3rd pairing role, as is most of the Habs defence.

3. Gustafsson is probably the hardest player to fit in the line-up. I don't think you can play him in tough match-ups next to Weber, he's just too much of a question defensively. He's ideally getting protected 3rd-pairing minutes at ES (again, as most of our D needs) and then helping as a LH shot on the PP. At the end of the day, you have to wonder how much value the Habs think Evans/Armia/Staal/Byron are bringing and whether Gustafsson as a 7th D man and PP specialist can be an option.

Sorry, I just don't see Kulak as better than Edmundson I watched Kulak give the puck right to Winnipeg forwards three times in a row on one shift last game they played! Kulak had more potential to be a great Dman but I am pretty sure that will never happen because he is so hard to trust one shift he is brilliant the next he is lost. Edmundson is a far safer player to have in the lineup in my opinion. As for pairings I see something like this

Edmundson  Petry

Merril  Webber

Chiarot  Romanov

that being said we will have to see what is up with Gustafsson as he could be really helpful if he seems to have his game in order and for me Kulak is a spare.
