Julien & Muller Fired

Recommended Posts

Per Renaud Lavoie

I’m told that last night loss was not the final straw for Claude Julien and Kirk Muller. The decision to let them go was made before and the plan was to announced it today

Well the excuses are over!!!!

Not overly familiar with Ducharme , anyone have any input?

No NHL coaching experience (other than as our assistant) but good pedigree in the minors and international.  I think he will likely be given a short leash- as in, they are probably still actively looking for a HC but if he surprises in the next few gams as interim, he could very well earn the job full time.

I think the first big question is: how will he manage the roster?  If we keep seeing the same poor ice time management that will be a bad sign.

Well, well, well! I guess this was inevitable! Finally we get to say goodbye to a coach that is still living and beleiving in the 70's approach to NHL hockey and another that could not bring the special team to any type of consistancy! Have no idea how Ducharme will work out but it cannot be any worse? Enough is enough!

We have all been complaining about the coaching staff for years now and not sure why it took so long?

The good news is that Ducharme has seen a significant portion of our roster and their playing habits. He has some solid Junior experience with Halifax Mooseheads and Drummondville - he's won at several levels (Memorial Cup, Team Canada juniors) - He has paid his dues and deserves a chance so I don't think this is the peter principle of promoting to your highest level of incompetence. I do expect him to be more flexible on his pairings.

Yeah... if we keep seeing Chiarot in OT, I'm going to be concerned.

Nobody can say they're surprised. MB is running out of lives. It's do or die for him this season.

Actually i think his moves the last 12 - 15 months have probably given him some breathing room.  Ultimately a GM needs to win, but Molson is a notoriously nice guy. I think he will say "well, Marc has had some bumps but he's done really well the last couple of years"  - and ultimately, we've seen that with some of the best GMs in the league. Poile made a ton of gaffes in his first 6-8 years but is now super well respected.

Unless the team absolutely collapses, i think MB is safe for at least 1-2 more years.

For sure. And i do think Ducharme will make adjustments. I wouldnt be surprsed at all to see JK and Danault flipped. I think you may see Kulak in the top 4.  The question is how quickly will he implement it? will he just 'go for it' or will he ease the changes in.  Will be interesting to watch.

Clearly MB had to make a move - he doesn't want to go down without throwing a life preserver out there with Ducharme. Funny how a couple of weeks ago, there was talk of MB being extended for another block of years. Now if this team continues to struggle, and as a minimum not make the playoffs or at least challenge in the first round, it is his line that gets cut.

MB has made 3 great moves in Anderson, Toffoli, Allen - 1 moderate faux paux in duplication of Edmundson to Chiarot - quasi clone. We have 9 picks in the first 4 rounds of next year's draft but with substantially reduced junior/college playing evaluation time, these will be some trials and errors. The good news is our future still looks bright with Caufield, Norlinder, Harris, Struble, Ylonen. The tough calls are still out there on Tatar, Dano, what to do with Byron / Lehkonen / Poehling
