hockey_gal89
The day Koivu stops playing for the habs I am going to call in to work and ask for a few days of bereavement leave It is painfully difficult for some of us (myself included) to picture a Habs roster in the modern day without Saku Koivu. Guest matt_the_fan
He's a survivor. Cancer, and a poked eye. Now hopefully he can go uninjured during the next few years, in witch he will hopefully play at his prime and bring home a cup or two.

I think if Koivu wins the cup for the Habs within the next 2 seasons, then he'll retire...but fans will have to cross the retirement bridge when Saku comes to it

Good thing Saku came along to make things better !!! I will feel the same on that dreaded future day too !!!
Guest 1970 Habs
Franchise players like Saku are hard to find and even harder to lose (when they retire). I expect (and hope) when he does retire that there will always be a place for him in Montreal.

Guest Un_Lavalois
Koivu for GM Seriously, Koivu is always there for the team! If I was him, I dont know how many times i'd ask to be traded and I LOVE the Canadiens, cant imagine how much he does.. would he even accept to wear another nhl jersey? That man is our franchise player! He's not a "franchise" type of player, but he's our little franchise player who is the REAL face of the team. Not a Souray who wants to look good before leaving, he is the REAL deal! Koivu! Koivu! Koivu!

Without a doubt, if he ends his career with us. It will take a few years though...

tommyv
Well if Koivu remains a Hab his entire career, I think that will require a long hard look regardless who is still up for retirement. I mean if he stayed here another 5 years and retired, he'd be one of the longest serving habs in history, the longest serving captain by quite a margin, I mean even the whole battle with cancer with the team by his side has something to say in this matter. And if we managed to capture a cup within those 5 years, I think that would put the cherry on top of the decision. imo

It will prpbably be a double ceremony like when they retired #12.
Guest Renko
I dont think cups should be the only requirement to a retirement of a jersey. I think you have to look at how the player made the fans feel over his tenure with the team. It isnt fair to say "Koivu didnt bring us a cup" because hockey is a team sport and the Stanley Cup is an award won by an entire team. On one hand, Koivu hasnt had FANTASTIC individual success with the club but I think he has had enough that if he remains the team's longest serving captain, he should have his jersey retired. As a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, honoring Saku for everything he has done for this hockey team, on and off the ice, would make me happy and I think the happiness of the fans is the goal of organization. Its still too early to be talking about this, but Saku has already done enough in my books.

Possibly, but if so, it has just as much to do with Yvon Lambert wearing the number. Saku has done a great many things for the team and city, but as Regis mentioned, several other numbers aren't retired but have been worn by great names. We can't retire everything. Guest CanadianMike
Do you guys think Koivu's number will be retired when he's finished? I think it should be and it will be. NO...why? Would we be retiring his number for what he has done on the ice, or what a great story he has? (comeback from cancer)? His numbers are nothing to retire a players number about. Those that say it is not the numbers, well he hasn't won anything either.
