alright boss...il predict koivu getting 3 assists vs the islanders

Lol, says the boss with 47 posts.

Anyway, what a game by our captain last night.

Another two goal game. How many of these has he had this season? I want to say three but I'm not too sure.

I wonder when this guy will turn the trick - he's coming mighty close that's for sure.

I bet when Janne got smoked Koivu was thinking "FINALLY it wasn't me." lol.

Anyway, great effort by him - he takes such a beating and it never seems to ge to him.

Despite not being a hall of fame player or whatever I still think his jersey should be retired by the Habs, he's done a lot for the organization more than some. He definitley has all the qualifications the Rocket, Boom Boom etc did in terms of his goals, personality, heart and love for the team. The only thing he hasn't done yet is win a cup (which I'm confident he will before he retires) and he doens't produce great numbers.

Most times you can replace a player who has great numbers - it's hard to replace a guy with the heart and dedication of Saku Koivu.

I would say this is Koivu's best season thus far. The way he is playing looks like he is on a mission. Mission 25 Stanley Cups!

Funny, I've been saying that (to my game-mates), for a while now. Seems like he's having the best season of his career (since the cancer), this guy's tearing it up out there!

Does anyone else agree, that Koivu seems to be playing better, this season?

The guy just gets better with age, like a well aged bottle of whiskey!

I agree. I always liked this guy (obviously), but never really defended him when the Saku bashers had stuff to say. I wonder where they have all gone to this season? lol

He is such a surprise this season(more then what we could have expected esp. after the eye injury)....plays HUNGRY all the time and deserves that "C" no doubt about it.

He really is, I wonder if he's going to pull off a career year this year. He has gotten better and better each season, at this rate look out when he's 50 :D

I'm so excited to watch him out there and I'm excited that he's been a part of the team for this long.

Class act, we really lucked out with that draft pick way back in 1994.

Yeah I too thought for sure he'd struggle after the injury to his eye last season. But he's come back better than last year.

Hmm, maybe that blind spot does him some good out here :D

Blind spot? What blind spot? :D :D

In all honesty, if you didn't know he'd suffered a severe eye injury last year and was playing this year with a cataract that will require offseason surgery, would you be able to tell based on his play? :D

All i can say is, what a guy, what a captian, and what a leader! I'm every bit as proud of Capt. Koivu, as i was Capt. Carbo!!!!!!!!! The plus side of Saku is, that he put's up more point's than Carbo did.

For me, Koivu has surpassed most of the old Habs as my favourite, I still love guys like Carbs and Lafleur, Roy and Boom Boom but Koivu is amongst my favourite.

My all-time favourite is the Rocket, and I don't think I could pick between the Rocket and Koivu.

Both brought so much to the team and both will be remembered for generations to come.

ps- you know what's sad? When Koivu retires he'll probably move back to Finland meaning he won't be around MTL a lot.

At least the Rocket was around a lot :D

Well said. I remember when Saku was the NHL's leading scorer back in 96 or 97, and then blew out his knee in chicago. I thought he'd never be the same, but it looks like he has made it back! Go Saku!!!

Let's all knock on wood those knees stay healthy. Doesn't he wear two full braces, one on each knee? Anyway, yeah, he's playing great. I hope this guy will be a Hab for life.

I got a question for you fellow Koivu fans.

Should his number be retired even if he doesn't bring home a cup?

of course my answer is yes because im answering with my heart but not my head.

imo i think he deserves it.he still has a couple of years ahead of him...we have time to answer this question.but if he were to retire today i think i would do it but not right away maybe in 5 to 10 years

Well, other than k. Muller in the early 90's, # 11 belonged to Y. Lambert from about '71 to '81, of whom i personally met on a couple of occasion's ( centre molson) I do hold Saku at the VERY TOP of that list. For MANY reason's.

FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!

I personaly would say yes with what hes done for a habs team in an era where the habs have been terrible (95-03), If he ever wins us a Cup, its guaranteed his jersey will be in the rafters, if not, he MIGHT have a slim chance.

I think his number should be retired and I think if it isn't the Habs organization is crazy. This guy is amazing.

ahh the old retire Saku's number discussion. I think they will retire number 11 someday but will do it like they did for Moore and Cournoyer. They will retire it for 2 or 3 guys at the same time.

If anyine deserves to win a cup, it's Saku. I am sure he will win at least one with the Habs in the very near future. There's a good chance that it'll be THIS year! :D

Cheers!

It would be nice if it was this year, but I think more realistically we won't be Stanley Cup ready for another two years or so.

It would rock to win it this year, but there's so much more developing we need to do as a team - with Saku at the heart of it.

But while we wait paitently for our boys to raise the Stanley Cup again I think it's fun watching the team grow and evolve :D

You're probably right, but it feels SO good to have realistic hope again! It's been a while, eh? :thumb:

I was just looking on nhl.com at Saku's stats. He's had some good seasons.

Like his 71 point season in 2002-03, where he scored 21 goals and had 50 assists.

He had 62 points in 2005-06 too which isn't too bad.

Something that does make me happy is that we're only 1/4 through the season and he has 10 goals, last season he only had 17 and his record year he had 21 - he's definitley on pace to break that this year :D

God willing he'll keep this pace up and play a great season.

Oh and he has a total of 487 NHL points - coming up to the 500 mark on that. :D

For sure, a couple of years back I was getting a little worried we were goign to end up like the Leafs - but with the coaching staff we have now, the palyers etc., my nightmares can finally come to an end.
