Guest jzun00
NHL.com ranked the top 10 captains of this year and Saku came in fourth, only behind J. Iginla, J. Sackic, and R. Brindamour. Here is what they said: "4. Saku Koivu -- Montreal -- Like Sundin, Koivu has the expectations of a passionate and knowledgeable fan base to live up to in Montreal. If possible, Koivu actually has more stress placed upon him than even Sundin. Yet this unflappable Finn has handled the position with nothing but grace since assuming the head role in 1999. This is a man that has quietly returned from cancer and a near career-ending eye injury since becoming captain. His courage, it seems, knows no limits and makes him ideal to continue his franchise’s proud legacy of elite leaders. " http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&pa...rticleid=282595 This is so true and without this guy, this team is nothing.
habs-24
For everyone who always trashes Koivu...did you see his reaction on the Lats goal...there is no other team player like him. He knew the goal could have been his but didn't care, was happy for the yougn guy to get his first. His interview after was all about Lats. This is a true leader and team player without a selfish bone. I don't care if he never get teh 70 pt mark...i would never trade this guy. So much heart and so good for the team. I love how excited he gets when the team scores. On a side note...priceless pic of Ryder on the goal too...what a face hehe Who in this world trashes Saku? tommyv
You know, alot of people always come here and say Saku is nothing compared to guys like Beliveau, Richard, Gainey etc. but 20 years from now, id like to see if one of us will ever forget this guy. His point production is so underated in the league because of his injury plagued career, his leadership is starting to get noticed finally, and his character and love for this city and his will for it to succeed is truely amazing, he has been my Favorite player here for a long time, and i say if he does spend his whole career here, he will have earned every right to be up there with the guys like Richard and them, he deserves it. Guest StratfordStreak
To me it seems like he is getting better as the years go by. Maybe he just has better caliber players on his line now. Still I can't see him hanging from the rafters unless maybe the habs suddenly win a few cups before his career is done. Guest habs_fan1160
He does get better every year, he never has a huge blow out year but he's consistant. At least he's someone we can always rely on. He seems genuine and definitley makes the fans feel like they're part of the teams success. Go Koviu, turn the trick vs the Leafs on Sat!! Still I can't see him hanging from the rafters unless maybe the habs suddenly win a few cups before his career is done. I'd say one cup, especially if that cup comes in our centennial. Either way, if anyone shows what this organization is all about, its Koivu. Great captain, great person. He may not be the same as our "typical greats", but he does the unthinkable all the time. He shows that small guys can play hard, that europeans can be great captains and gives us all a little hope with his never give up attitude. Nothing keeps this guy down and thats a great message and really represnts what this franchise is about. He also reminds us that, as much as we love this game and team, there are more important thing than hockey. In the end I feel he'll be deserving of having his number up there, but lets not expect it anytime soon after retirement. It seems to take us a long time to honour our greats. roy_133
There are a few Koivu bashers out there who argue that if he's not scoring goals, he's not helping this team, they keep bringing up his goal scoring slumps... First of all, Koivu is a playmaker, plain and simple, he will put up points, he has a very good career PPG and he's played with some bad wingers over the years... So I don't think there's any doubt he's a skilled player, at all... Koivu's value to this team is SO much more then statistics... It's no coincidence that when he went down in the playoffs we lost in 4 straight... It's no coincidence that when a young player plays with Saku their game rises to a whole new level (Higgins, Latendresse, Perezhogin - at the start of last season). Koivu does everything for this team, he leads, he kills penalties, he works the power play, he makes our number 1 line tick, he puts up points, he's great with the media and he's gone through more then any captain should and he's taken everything with grace and dignity, he's an inspiration, on the ice and off it, he never backs down from anyone or anything and he handles every situation with class, he's answered the call every time the Canadiens have needed him, every time the Finnish National team has needed him. He's a true leader and it's not hard to figure out when you hear how teammates, ex-teammates and anyone else in the hockey community speak about this guy, I don't think I've ever heard one discouraging word from anyone who has ever met this man. For all the flack he gets for not speaking French, for not scoring 50 goals a season, for not being Canadian he deserves 500x as much credit for all the great things I mentioned about him, I hope this guy retires a Hab because I wouldn't be able to stand seeing him in another jersey. NB-HABS-FAN_mtl
He is an awesome leader for this team. I could not imagine anyone else as captain nor would I want to have anyone else. He is passionate about the team and his line mates. Certainly a great playmaker, and sure he may not score every night, but he doesn't have to. He only needs to be in the game for the team to do better and be better. He is the heart and soul of this team......by a mile. I'm proud of all his accomplishments on and off the ice. GO SAKU! Habs-fan-UK
King Koivu is amazing, underrated around the league I think his number should be retired when he retires as he can come back from cancer to still be an amazing hockey player. This shows us what we can do when we put our mind to it. One of the great captains and an inspiration to everyone (i just ordered a shirt with his name n number on for xmas as well:D )
