i have no doubts he's our no 1 d-man. he's pretty much under the radar in nhl, but soon he can become one of the best d-man in the league (in my opinion he's not in that category yet, but he's very close)

I was just listeniong to Tony on the Tem 990 and he said that not only are the Habs not loking to resign Markov after this year, but he might be looking to play in Russia. Please someone shien some light on this and tell em hes resigning in Montreal.

This sounds completely fabricated to me. I wouldn't worry about all these rumours. There's a whole season of hockey to play and it's absurd to think that Gainey and Carbo would be focused on the offseason right now. And the idea that we would have no interest in re-signing our top defenseman is pretty hard to swallow.

I think he is too important a part of the puzzle for Gainey to let him go quietly.

He is our PP quaterback, a huge defensive presence and a cornerstone to the Habs organization at this point in his career. We may have to give him a larger contract than we want, but frankly I think it would be worth it considering his role.

Hopefully the other Russians on the team will try to talk him into staying. The fans love him too, so hopefully that will be a factor as well.

Totally. He's not only our best defensman, he's probably our best defensman since Chelios - thats the best defensman on this team in over 15 years, folks.

He's offensively miles ahead of our other D - and he's also probably our best defensive D (he doesnt get as much defensive duties because he needs some rest time too! lol).

A healthy markov could top 60pts this year, I think.

My guess is, on the open market, he'd fetch over $5m a season. I would imagine Gainey is trying to resign for between $4 - 4.5m...so as not to offset the balance with guys like koivu, kovalev etc. (Although you could probably argue he's as important as anyone to this team).

I hope he gets locked up long-term...there's very few people id be more upset to see leave than Markov.

The fact that he's very shy and now plays on a team with several other russians (and former USSR born players who speak russian) probably helps montreal's case a lot.

I'd be happy if we signed him for 4-4.5 mil a season for around 3 seasons.

Anything more than 5 would be unreasonable IMHO... We don't need to throw around Chara-like salaries.

Indeed. I see Markov as the type of guy who is happy where he is and wouldn't like to see a change of scenery. Let's hope he stays healthy and proves everyone he truly is one of the best D-man in the league.

Emerging as a premier D-man and definately integral to Montréal's success. I hope we lock him up long term and that he continues to improve in all aspects of the game.

You know, Boston didn't overpay him in a bad sense, they overpaid him because they know he's an integral player who makes a difference.

It is (I'd much prefer 4), but when you look at what other top D-men in the league are making...

I know he doesn't have the "superstar" quality of a Pronger or Niedermayer...but he's an integral member of the team and by far out top defenseman.

Zach you're right, I feel the same way too, you just have to have a good 1st line, Markov, superstar or not, definitely provides it, I'd prefer we pay him 4m as well.

Yep...sometimes you have to make tough decisions in keeping players, but I think Markov's worth it.

If guys like McCabe and Kubina are making $5m+  Markov at $4m would be a steal :D

HELL YES! What were they thinking?! I would've scrapped McCabe(or traded for something worthwhile to a sucker team) got Chara with that money, and maybe sign a good forward or solid d man.
