No, that signing is starting to look real good.

It looked goo the day it was made. Great defensemen made good money, its that simple. He woudl've made more on the open market and I'm glad he decided not to try free agency.

As for the +/-, we should also get rid of half the team.

I think we are forgetting that if our centerman isn't winning critical faceoffs our guys are going to be minus. Look at Koivu's +/-. Then take a look at poor Ryder's. If Koivu can't win the faceoffs in their end he gives up a lot of chances for the opposition to score.

Hes a great team player, i can see him playing his entire career here, or until we are done with him :(

As sad as that sounds, Kind of like Rivet he would have played here until the end of his career, but look @ him now, hes probably loving the change, as he would have been offered 1.5-2 mill this year to stay here.

Now he has a bigger role, and a bigger pay check. That being said, Markov is a great team player, could easily take Rivet's A on his jersey for next year.

And i hope he does have a long great career with us

Just to add Markov is better then 3/4 of these players defensivly also. He reads plays so well, he has amaizing hockey sence. Id put him in top 7 for breakout passes also. Not 2 many D have the vision he posseses.

Markov is the complete package in term of skills.

Which is the reason I don't mind his contract. It's not just the pionts, not just his defensive skill, and not just his non-point offensive skill, it's that a defensman who can do it all is very valuable. He's similar to Pronger and Niedermayer except a step below them and the one element he is missing is the physical one.

Which Komi provides so it's all good :)

Oh it's not a big issue or anything, his positioning is so good I honestly don't know if being physical would really make him much better overall anyways, and as you said he has Komi beside him.

I was just saying that when you look at the ultimate complete defensman in Pronger, Markov isn't quite at his level in a number of areas, but physical play is the only one that he's completely missing. Everywhere else, he's just a step below.

You dont need to play physical when your smart. Look at Linstrom hes not physical and he gets the job done better then anyone else in the league deffensivly, and he even makes it look easy!

A little bias aren't we? :P

Seriously, there are several defensemen I'd take before Markov on that list, and I really like Markov. ;)

What would you guys say were some of the best plays Markov has made and some of the worst?

Hard to pin point specific plays, but his best quality in my opinion is his passing. I'm always amazed to see the cross ice passes in the offensive zone. He sees the play very well.

His down side is his inconsistency. Again last year, he had a very slow start to the season and many were noticing even on this board. As dominant as he can be, he'll go through stretches where he'll turn the puck over too often and make poor decisions with the puck. I guess that's what keeps him from being an elite player in this league. If he ever becomes more consistent, he could some day get nominations for the Norris, as the abilities are there.

Anyone remember the play in 05-06 where he threw it from just over our blue line at the goalie five hole, who was caught off guard and a forward on our team buried the rebound? That was unbelievable Hockey sense, I flipped when I saw that play unfold.

He reads and senses play's very well, and how they will unfold when he makes it happening. That one you named Keith, was a beauty.

I remember what you're talking about, I believe Esche was the goalie, and Ribeiro barried the rebound.

(I also think Ribeiro won that game for us with an OT goal)

A few plays from last year I remember

1.OT winner vs Boston

2.Any one of his cross ice passes on the PP to Kovy

3. The pass where he split the dmen and fed it perfectly to Koivu who ended up scoring on a breakaway.

Plus MARKOV HAS A PERSONALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No question about that. if he can ever get more consistent, he could challenge for the points race amongst defensman. Its no coincidence that the three times Gainey called him out publicly, he responded with 4, 3 and 3 point games. Im not saying he should be called out all the time - that wont help - but if he can find some more consistency (not due to a lack of effort, imo) he'll be (to quote mcguire) a MONSTER. ;)

True. He is highly consistant season to season, but he's kind of like Ryder in the sense that within a season, he is inconsistant.

As for the Norris, I doubt it. Markov has always been underrated accross the league, and the Norris, like the Selke, is somewhat of a popularity award. But I suppose it's possible.
