Guest Karinne
Letting players go or loosing them is part of the game, but I think id have a really tough time with loosing Markov....And the team would suffer.
Guest habs_fan1160
The team would suffer without Markov no doubt about that. I'd like to see him sign a nice and long contract so we can be comfortable in the fact that we have a reliable and solid defenceman. I think he's one of the most consistant D-men I've seen on the Habs in a long time, it'd be a shame to lose him.
tmash
Then why go and trade for Janne if there are prospects waiting ?As for MArkov and Souray, if they continue at this pace they can expect to look for about $ 4 million each next year from some team Your optimistic. If last season was any indication, I think Markov will get about 5-6 million, Souray possibly more if he can keep scoring.

That means bob might be able to lock him up longer, to stay with his friends & place he is comfortable, for $4.5m for say 3 or 4 years. Souray is still a little one-dimensional though. I think he could probably get $5m from a team like toronto (who like to overpay one-dimensional dmen)...but not more. Actually, one-dimensional is harsh. He brings a lot to the team besides just scoring - he's tough & a great leader - but what i mean is, he's amazing offensively...adequent defensively. Markov is arguably the best offensive threat on our blueline AND maybe the best defensive dman when put in that sort of a situation. Then again, what do i know! 100proofevil
For the right price, i think we could resign both markov and souray but that would mean losing bonk and Johnson

Guest StratfordStreak
I still think Markov makes some terrible choices in the Habs end, but he is a great offensive threat with the puck, and has a knack of getting himself in the open when it counts. I think he's one of our most solid defencemen. He's pretty quiet but he's always there when you really need him.
tommyv
And he is quietly our second leading scorer on the team, not to mention the fact he was the ONLY defencemen we had capable of stoping Afinogenov from causing chaos. Markov is our best defencemen, all there is to it, he the best defensively, he gets the most minutes, and his outlet passes are unmatched, of all the UFAs next year, he is the one i hope we sign first. True dat. Maybe now people will understand why Ovechkin thinks he's the toughest D-man to play against in the NHL. Markov is one of the best positional players in the league, which is why you never see him getting undressed by a forward. If I'm Bob Gainey, my top defensive priority is getting this guy re-signed to a three or four-year contract.
Guest NothingGreater
Guest Hi Alex -- So far in the NHL, who has been the player you played against who has most impressed you? Alexander Ovechkin Peter Forsberg, because he is one of the best passers I've ever seen and he's so good. Scott Hannan from San Jose and Andrei Markov from Montreal are the toughest defenders I've had to play against. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After reading what you said I didn't believe it, but...Go Markov!!! Guest #19
Didn't someone point out that Ovechkin had never actually played against Markov when he made that comment? (edited) Ovechkin and Markov haven't played in the NHL only...Please watch your comments directed at others. HabsAdmin
Guest StratfordStreak
Ovechkin and Markov haven't played in the NHL only... Well Markov is 27, Ovechkin is probably around 21, so unless they played against each other during the strike year...... Nice response to me by the way. (edit) - be very careful about how you choose your words. I appreciate they were said in response to a flame - but two wrongs don't make a right
Guest StratfordStreak
Well, I found out Markov and Ovechkin both played for Moscow Dynamo during the strike year, so Ovechkins comments must have been based on practice sessions. They played for the Russian National team as well. Besides as the previous message suggested Montreal and Washington had played 4 times last season, though I did not check if they played before the Ovechkin's interview and if Markov and Ovechkin were on the ice. Guest cup crazy88
That comment was made early on during the season last year, I think he may have played us once or twice max.. possibly not even at all.. but it wasnt recent or during the offseason, I heard that one a while ago.. roy_133
If you can believe it, this guy is underrated, yes a player playing in Montreal, for the Canadiens is underrated... I think this guy is a stud, a star, his point totals, his +/-, the minutes he logs for us, the difference in our record with and without him last season was no fluke... This guy NEEDS to be resigned, it's that simple, he's probably our best player.
