Any news about Emelin? With all the UFA's we have going into this summer, if we could bring him over by next October this could be a huge chance for him to crack the lineup.. Or is their something about the Russian leagues barring him from making it over anytime soon?

I think that if the player wants to come, they come. I don't know of any single player that is playing in Russia against his will. Matter of fact there seem to be a lot more Russians wanting to get out of their NHL contracts to go back to Russia. All the babble about the Russian Ice Hockey Federation not allowing it's players to leave for N.A. is mostly NHL player agent (or G.M.)propaganda. I think that Montreal might like to see all three of their Russian defense prospects, Korneev, Emelin, and Valentenko, come to North America.

Of course we would love to see them come over! That being said, is there any news or hope that one of them might take the boat ride over in the Summer? I surely hopeso, with the 4 UFA's this will be the best chance for a youg D-man to crack the roster. And to be horifically honest, our d-prospects that are here and willing, don't exactly look wonderful or to full of potential.

The problem is that they are already under contract in Russia. Emelin signed a 2 year deal with Lada this past summer and his dad is the coach, so one has to wonder if he would jump ship on signed contract like some of the other Russians did this past summer. Valentenko signed for 3 years, not sure about Korneev but if he's not signed this summer we lose his rights, personally I don't think he will come over, he's on the top pairing on a young CSKA team. I know he was making 350K with AK Bars, so he'd be taking a big pay cut unless he made the Habs full time.

I know that they wanted Valentenko to come over this year, so we'll see what happens. Would be great to see Emelin come over next year, we are lacking on the LD's next year in Hamilton and who knows what will happen with our UFA's.

Well, Hopefully these three are paying attention to the current UFA D. Situation in Montreal. I'm sure one of them realizes that we have 4 UFA D-men and how easy it could be for them to crack the lineup if they just came over and had a strong training camp. Also, 350k isn't that much, as league minimum is 500k or something isn't it? Would be a heft raise for them just by making the team!

But he would have to leave his job come over here and tryout, if he didn't make the team then he'd be in the ahl, making around 60-70K. Plus he makes more then 350K, there are other benefits included in contracts like no taxes, free car, house, etc.... it all depends on the player and the organization. I've heard that AK Bars is one of the top teams to play for in terms of how well they treat their players (rich owner) I don't know what he's getting paid with CSKA though, but I'd assume it's around or more then he got last year. Either way we'll see what happens if he comes over or not.

Also Emelin is still out with the knee injury, it caused him to miss the Sweden games, but Korneev made the team.

A German player named Jan Benda played for AK Bars a few years ago. He was no star, but he earned with around 1 million dollars per year. Plus free housing, free car and other benefits. So Emelin could probably make more money staying in Russia.

When do we have to sign him by? If you don't sign a player after so many years, he can re-enter the draft and anyone can sign him, correct? Just wondering what that time frame is.

June 1 2008. And if he isn't signed by then he re-enters the draft.

8. (9) Alexei Emelin, D, 21

Acquired : 3rd round, 84th overall, 2004

Emelin has rebounded from a controversial end to last season when he was involved in an on-ice incident that earned him a suspension. But he's put that uncharacteristically thug-like behavior behind them and has again been a cornerstone for his Tolyatti Lada squad in Russia.

The 6'0 blueliner shows a solid balance to his game, maintaining his defensive responsibilities while showing a solid understanding of when to jump into the play. He's also shown a willingness to be Physical without being bruising.

In 38 games, Emelin has posted adequate offensive numbers, with two goals and seven assists. He's also cut back on his time in the penalty box, with only 65 minutes in penalties to date as opposed to his career-high 129 minutes earned in only five more games last season.

The goal for the Habs is to see Emelin make the jump to North America next season to continue his development in the AHL. The idea is that he's progressed as far as he can against the Russian competition and it's now time for him, like Grabovski and the Kostitsyn brothers before him, to learn the ancillary lessons that complement the on-ice knowledge that he's displayed.

I know that I was impressed when he played in the World Junior tournament a couple years ago. I wondered what happened to him.

Thanks for the update and it is good to here that he is still in the mix.

Hopefully, he will develop into another Andrei Markov.

or komisarek lol

Get this guy signed and even give him an NHL spot if you have to. I think he will be a very good D-man in the future, do what you can!

Emelin's team Lada is having major money problems again and could be expelled from the RSL. There are reports from the Russian media that Emelin might come to the Habs training camp this fall, if Lada can't find the money to pay their players and build a new rink, then Emelin's contract with Lada will be void and the team will be out of the RSL. A similar situation happend last year with Grabovski and Dynamo as he wasn't paid for months by his team, thus his contract became void.

If he's able to come over, (and makes the team) I think we should put him on a pairing with Markov. It would really help Emelin get accustomed to the N.A style of game quicker because he's playing with someone who went through the same thing. His physicallity would compliment Morkovs, just like Komi's. Playing with a countrymen can't hurt either. (Unless you're name is Samsonov)

Emelin played his first game for Team Russia at the WC's. He was a +1 same as Markov.

Korneev was the last defensemen cut and is on the backup roster in case someone gets hurt.

Basically, Yemelin is saying that he'd love to play in Montreal next year but he's still under contract with Tolyatti Lada until 2008, that negotiations are ongoing but he's not bringing his hopes up that an agreement will be reached and expects to have to play out his contract.

Too bad he's still a year away. We could really use this guy soon, and he should probably spend a bit of time in the AHL as well.

I don't know... seeing guys like Semin, Ovechkin and Malkin coming straight out of the Russian Elite league makes me think that the caliber of hockey out there is pretty darn good, especially that he was picked to represent his country at the World, he must be pretty good... I'd certainly like to see him at least try out here. He can't do worst than Bouillon, Dandenault, Niinimaa or Streit in my opinion.

Would a new transfer agreement between the NHL and the Russian teams make any difference to Emelin's availability? Because I heard that one was close to being worked out.

I also agree that the Russian Elite League must be pretty good to keep producing talents like Semin, Malkin, etc. That being said, if any player position dictates a year in the AHL learning the North American game, it's defense. Defencemen take longer to mature anyway, and being effective on the smaller ice surface takes time.
