do you want me to cry because he doesn't want to play here...yet or ever?

I am disappointed, but I will not waste my time with a player that doesn't want to play here. <_<

Look if this guy wanted to stay in Russia that's fine. But why enter the draft if your not totally committed to come over here. That to me is a punk move.

So when you were 18 you knew exactly what you wanted to do? When he entered the draft the climate for hockey in his nation wasn't good and the NHL was the best option. That is not the case today. He has options and he choose to play hockey in his country. That's not a punk move, that's business and he just made a ton of money. You better get used to it. The league in Russia will just keep getting better and better, and owners willing to pay big bucks. More and more players in Russia will have the option to stay and make money in their own country. Seems like a no brainer to me.

This kid said he had no idea Montreal was interested when he signed with this new club. HELLO that is a big fat lie. Everbody new that Gainey wanted him. He can't be that bright of a person he he doesn't realize that a team that drafts him actually means that the team wants him. And if this guy doesn't want to play over here just put the Habs on notice instaed of hanging on. He is a punk.

We should trade him for a prospect or a draft pick before it's to late to get anything.

I do not know if there would be any takers but it is worth a try.

If Freddybeach is right about the Russian league ("The league in Russia will just keep getting better and better, and owners willing to pay big bucks. More and more players in Russia will have the option to stay and make money in their own country.") then without a transfer agreement the Habs (as well as the other NHL teams) should be careful drafting Russian players.

Maybe if the NHL boycotted drafting Russian players the Russian League would come back to the table to negotiate a transfer agreement.

i agree we should be careful drafting russian players. i think if their russian team offers them more money than their nhl club, they will stay in russia. in a lot of cases it's all about money. i don't believe emelin didn't know about habs wanting him to play in north america, or that he's got one more year to sign with us, if he doesn't he can come back to the draft. but it's really hard to tell if he's confused, or he just doesn't really care about nhl, or he knows he will make more money if he stays in russia.

i just hope emelin's got out clause and the habs can work things out with him. but i'd be careful drafting russians.

I don't know how many people commenting have a strong command of French but in this article (http://cyberpresse.ca/article/20070619/CPSPORTS01/706190534/1006/CPSPORTS01)

his agent says he was pressured into signing.

"«Il est clair qu'Alexei a été victime de pressions pour rester là-bas, a estimé Diamond. "

Pressured or not he made the decision to sign for whatever reason.

However, I do not begrudge him for making the decision as it is difficult to leave your homeland, family and friends.

How many people on this Forum have stated drafting prospects is sometimes a "crap shoot". The Habs just happened to lose on this one.

I wouldn't be surpised if he got pressured. Like in olympics and stuff they're insanely competitive and will do anything to keep/pressure/threaten their athletes just to win. Whatever this kid just lost a lot of my respect. And i don't care what you say. If I was a hockey player even making just 1 million or even the minimum of 450k, i would still want to play against the greatest players in the world, and there's no contesting that that is the NHL and he fits NHL's grittier style much better IMO. Very dissapointed.

Easy folks, His Agent is also dumbfounded by it all, and blames "Extra" pressure on the part of the Russian team for what happened. He claims that behind closed doors Emelin wants to be here immediatly, he feels Emelin was heavily pressured into the contract and its not in fact what he wants.

They did the same thing to him as they did to Malkin, there is much more to this story than "He turned his back on the team". Behind the scenes we don't see what kind of pressure these desperate Russian teams place on these young guys, to the point of intimidation and threats even.

the article is in french but the part i'm talkin abut, and I quote in translated form "It's clear that Alexei was a victim of Pressure to stay over there. Its a shame, he's ready for the NHL and its in the NHL that he wants to play. The fans in Montreal would have loved him because he is fearless on the ice."

It may be some time before we hear the whole story. Since the fall of Communisim in Russia, it has certainly been a different place to live and operate. I'm not so sure democracy has been better for that country(something to be discussed in anopther thread), but it certainly is changing the way business is being done over there. No reason to think it wouldn't effect the hockey world as well.

Somebody call Malkin, and then have Malkin call Emelin, and have them work out the details on how to sneak on out of Russia, yo!

With the way things have gone for us concerning Emelin and for other teams with their Russian draft picks. I believe they(Russian draft picks) will drop far in the draft this year. I wonder if this has caused BG to change their thoughts on players from Russia this year?

It looks like we REALLY need to be careful when drafting any Russian-type players. It could turn into a wasted pick. This has implications immediately for the upcoming draft.

there's not much democracy in russia, believe me! what they are doing is pretty much the same as it was im soviet union, but there's more money involved, and that makes things worse.

i'd like to know just one thing, if there's out clause in emelins contract.

I agree, you can complain about management all you want but they can't babysit their prospects all day long and pray that another team, in the prospects own country doesn't start waiving big money at them to stay.

If its true that they started talking to Emelin before the WJC you would think he would tell Gainey he has had another offer to at least see where he stood with the Habs. Maybe Gainey would have pushed harder but if what we have been told is true, the Habs have been trying hard to get Valetenko and Emelin over here since last season. So it's not like they drafted Emelin and just never got back to him. Not Gaineys fault Emelin decided to follow his pocketbook.

I agree. This is terrible news though.

How exactly did that malkin thing go down? There was an outclause and he just left or what. I just wanna know if we can relate it somehow to Emelin and get him down here. Anyone up for a rescue mission?

if that's true, that he was pressured, than no wonder he didn't comment on the out-clause. unless ak bars removed the clause it's a russian labour clause and accompanies all contracts - so it is possible that he'll 'defect' like malkin did. i believe the pressure exists and look at what happened with malkin. i'm not ready to bail on this kid for whatever reason he signed with ak bars. i'm a delusional optimist i guess, and i still hope he makes his way here sooner rather than later.

It may not matter. It looks like Emelin actually prefers to stay and play in Russia. He may not want to come over here ever.

Where did you get that information? Because simply signing in Russia for 2 years does not imply that.

you can give your boss 2-week notice, and you can leave, that's russian labor law. malkins case was different, he gave 2 week notic, but they didn't want to let him go, there was something about him having problems to get his passport or something like that, lot of crap.

it's not like montreal cannot get emelin, but he needs to cooperate. if he wanted come and play here, but somewhat he signed in russia, i think he can still come here, but it's just way more dififcult now.

Well as long as what his agent is saying is true, bob will get it done. I think if he DOES get it done, i'll have to bowdown to gainey as the saviour of russian hockey slaves :)
