I have a PS3. Online play is impossible with NHL 08. The servers keep disconnecting and I keep getting logged out of my account. The most I've been able to do is a couple of shootouts.

Overall it's alright, I like downloading demo games :D

Are you on a wired or wireless connection? I've heard that they had problems with wireless networks and drops, but haven't heard anything bad about a wired connection.

Habs_fan, from my casual gaming point-of-view, the 360 and NHL 08 is all I'm going to need all year. I got a premium, because all the elite really gives you is alot of storage space(100 gigs I think, it's inane unless you're going to use it as another computer practically) and an cable for HD TV. My premium has something like 10 gigs, which is more than enough for savefiles, a bit of music, and an occasional demo. The Cable, although I can't comment on because I didn't get the elite, I can tell you this much, the games still look awesome on my HDTV, cable or not, to an untrained eye you might not be able to tell so I've heard.

Most people in my area and from school with new gaming consoles are the 360's, and it tends to have more of a "community" so to speak, everyone get's eachother's gamer tags and can always play with people after school. I've got a couple friends bugging me to get online so I can play NHL with them at the moment.

I got the premium system, two wireless controllers(I bought one extra) a recharger and battery packs, NHL 08, and a 3-year warranty(on everything, not just the overheating issue) for about 600. If you're going to get a system and play some games here and there, I can safely say the 360 wouldn't be a bad choice. If it's the best I don't know, the PS3 might be better, but I don't frankly care, the sports games are there on the 360, the online is, and although there isn't as much depth in games on the 360, bottom line is you only really need one good game for each genre, I've heard Call Of Duty 4 is great.

Also, you live near the border right? If you can go back and forth easily, buy one there, it will be cheaper(even more so if the dollar rises again).

me personally it is worth it. Our PS2 was on it's last legs before we bought the PS3 and there were games we wanted to finish. Keep in mind between her and I we put alot of hours on that machine. The Grandtheft auto series alone I probanly logged over 400 hours and I still haven't played the ne ones. The new PS3's don't have backwards compatibility like the 60gig hardrive ones (like mine) but if your the kind of person who sells off all their old games your not going to need the PS3 for playing PS1 & PS2 games . Some of the PS2 and one games are playable on the PS3 via emulation.your not addicted to world of war crack yet  we had a new computer made and she is addicted to WOW and I am into Bioshock. I couldn't see shelling out the money for the xbox360 when I needed a new computer, may as well trip it out to run all the new games and cut out the need for the xbox360 :D
The backwards compatibility isn't an issue for me. I don't have any PS1 or PS2 games, becuase I"ve always owned an Xbox. So I've always been bias towards the Xbox and hated the PS3 (don't know why, I guess you just get stuck on one), but the 360 seems to have a lot of risks involved in it and I think it would be disappointing to FINALLY get a new gaming system and then have to send it away for repairs. So Microsoft spent $1 billion increasing its warranties rather than fixing the problem? That's not a good sign. :)

They have NHL 08 on PS3 too...I'm sure I'll play more than that a year. It's hard for me to determine what kind of games I'm going to play because I like a little of everything. I used to live 45 mins from Buffalo, now I'm 7 hrs from the states - closest place Minot, North Dakota. So I take it you own a 360 and haven't had any problems with it?

You can always get an extended warranty at the store, I sooooooo should have gotten one... <_< ...but ya, the 360 is a lot more fun than the PS3.

That's what I hear. I'm just concerned about durability. If the PS3 is more durable and reliable than the 360 I would definatly get it. I don't want the hassel of having to return it for repairs once every so often.

The extended warranty comes from the store(Futureshop) not Microsoft, it was like 80$ for 2 years. If the console has problems you just bring it back and they give you a new one.

I have a wireless connection, the distance form my router to the PS3 is about 10-15 feet. When I check the connection it reads about 85-87% effeciency and I have had pretty much no problems getting online, only time I did was when the last system update was ready for download.

I bought a TV from the Future Shop about 6 years ago, it was still under "extended" warrenty with them and I took it back and they told me that'd have to ship it out for repairs. Long story short it took over 2.5 months to get the TV back. This happened twice and I finally just got a new TV from Best Buy. Did they tell you they replace it with a new one or just send it away for the repairs?

Extended warranties are a ripoff. I guess it gives you some "insurance" - but Futureshop isn't offering the things out of the goodness of their heart - they make good money off them. That means that statistically, chances are you don't get your money back.

The same thing can be said about home insurance - but with that I wouldn't want to risk losing hundreds of thousands of dollars, so accept being ripped off. But for things from Futureshop, if they break, it is an inconvenience, not life changing, so I'm not willing to let them rip me off with their "extended warranty".

if you have a decent computer you will be able to run Halo 3 when it comes out ;) Honestly I would never buy a Xbox 360 simply because the big name games are always released for the PC. Gears of war started on the Xbox360 and is now on the home PC, Bioshock, same thing, Halo 3 will be. oh and the overheating breakign thing? now I am sure 29dryden is going to comment on this ;):P but Microsoft had to spend 1 billion this past year to increase the warrenty on all xboxes because there are so many breaking down they need to keep the public happy. There was an article on egm.com and this one guy was on his 12th xbox 360. He recorded a call he had with customer support and when he asked them how many tickets did he have on his account for replacement xboxes the rep says "uhhhh 11 sir" then laughs, wow thats an awful lot

PS3 exclusives tend to stay just on the PS3. Some jump to other platforms but for the most part if you buy a PS3 exclusive like Heavenly Sword, your not going to find a version of it for the PC.

Try both before you buy one. I have a PS3 and have had no problems really. The only minor thing is the backwards compatibilty is not 100% for older PS1 games. I've always supported sony so I am a little bias :P You need to buy an extra cable to connect to your tv to get the full benefit of HD and like everything else there are always little "add on's" you can buy for it but IMO it really is a matter of what kind of gamer you are. If you are into shooters and playing online by all means go with the xbox 360. If you are more into action games and RPG'S the PS3 is the way to go.

nhl 08 stinks in pc but rules in 360 :P

never played it on either but it's still not a XBox exclusive :P

I will give credit to Microsoft they have done quite well building their online community. If you are into playing online with a large group then it's the way to go right now.

However isn't there a charge for xbox live?

I have live set up on my original Xbox, which I seriously haven't used in 2 yrs now...but it comes out yearly and it's 54$ a year for it. I'm working on cancelling it, except I can't remember my gamer tag and apparently you need that. Stupid con artists. :)

I usually don't go with the extended warrenty's either. However, the one I had on my TV from the future shop cost me 350$ - and it sucked. So I learned my lesson the hard way.

In the case of the 360 it was a new one.

I never take extended warranties either but with the XBOX 360 it's almost vital as the freakin' console has tons of problems and you can't repair it in your area like cell phones, TVs, printers, etc...you have to send it to Microsoft. I'm getting mine back Monday so it was gone for 4 weeks...

True, although the chances that the thing breaks are still relatively small. I was told when I bought my Xbox "The CD drive will break, so you need our warranty" - it never happened. Just always remember that whatever you spend, statistically you are not going to come out ahead. Now I can see the appeal of the things, but with name brand electronics, they are usually pretty reliable for a fairly long time.

With all the problems I've read about the 360, I think I'll go with PS3.

I don't want to have to replace it all the time, or take it in for repairs etc., etc. Doesn't matter if it's under warranty or not, it's a hassel.

So the PS3 it is.

Actually, 1/3 of XBOX 360 had a problem. Mine didn't break but it couldn't play DVDs and was not booting properly but since I wasn't using it very much I only realised it a few days after I could return it to the store.

True story. When I went to the Purolator office to send my 360, there was a guy inline in front of me picking up his 360 from repairs...for the third time...

I've heard a lot of stories like that, where people were getting it repaired for the fifth, sixth of tenth time. It just doesn't seem worth the hassel to me. And the PS3 can't have too much lower quality since it has the built in Blu Ray player.

I actually heard it was 1/2 Xbox 360s that have trouble. If so many people are having trouble, why not fix the problems and reproduce them?

I was talking electronics in general, but that is an incredibly high number. Maybe that would be one of the few products the warranty may be useful - dependi9ng on how easy it is to use.

i own a PS3 and have played the other systems and i can say the PS3 is my favourite.

about the unreliability i know 6 people with 360's and all of them have broken twice at least (red ring of death)

I don't know to much about wii but to me it seems to be more for people who wouldn't normally give a crap about video games.

The PS3 will have a great year due to the to the price drops and some new games coming out (btw COD 4 is incredible, online is great too)

so in my opinion the PS3 would be the best way to go!
