beckham_mtl
Ryan knows what his job description will be once he makes it to the NHL. In tonight's game against Red Deer he went after the Rebels star centre Martin Hanzal right at the drop of the puck. Thereafter Whitey played Hanzal to a draw, both players ended the night with 3 points. White remains 1 point ahead of the big Czech first rounder from the 2005 draft, and 1 point behind leader Zach Hamill in the WHL scoring race. Early returns suggest that White may be the best player the Habs drafted last summer.

beckham_mtl
Don't know if Hanzal is much of a fighter, but he is 6-5 and around 215 pounds.. Ryan isn't picking his spots.
Guest montreal
Yeah his looking pretty good .. he might be a steal even in the second round hope he continiues He was a 3rd rounder, there was talk of him as a possible 1st rounder going into the draft. Good move by Gainey to trade up to get him.
beckham_mtl
Ryan was the highest rated of the 5 North American skaters the Habs drafted in 2006 by Central Scouting, in their final rankings, so I suppose it shouldn't come as all that much of a surprise that he has been the quickest out of the gate. Guest yvanc12
" Whitey " took the lead in the W.H.L. scoring race with 2 assists tonight in a 3 -0 win in Regina . That gives him 74 pts in 57 games . 2 more pts than Zach Hamill of Everett who play Spokane later this evening . Keep it up Ryan !!!
Guest Hoser
I still think that his skating will be an issue at the highest level, but man is he a smart player along the boards. Not especially big or strong, but he always seems to win the puck in battles, and he can pass the puck very well. Seems like quite the steal for a 3rd rounder. And Maxwell is a pretty solid prospect in his own right, IMO he has a higher ceiling then Whitey, but then again he has a darker cellar, so we'll have to wait and see. He's not tall but he's thick and I do think he's strong or so it looks when he's along the boards or throwing a big hit. I agree his skating is a concern as is his lack of speed, first step quickness but he's got time to work on it. He does pass the puck well and his wrist shot is impressive. Maxwell has the speed and skating but plays more of a soft game, much less intense but has impressive offensive skills. Should be interesting to see how both develop, look forward to seeing both of them on Team Canada next year!
beckham_mtl
However he gets it done, White is certainly producing. When you get a guy with a grinder rep leading the league in scoring, you have a future NHL player for sure. Martin Hanzal who is up there with him is a year older and was a first round draft choice, with 2 seasons in the Czech Elite League behind him. Zach Hamill is a few months younger, but is a much more one dimensional player, and may still be a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft. White reminds me of Darcy Tucker and Brent Gilchrist, a couple of former Habs who weren't all that big, and had the rep of being poor skaters, but still produced on the scoreboard. Great thing is, that if Maxwell hadn't suffered his elbow injury, it would probably be him leading the WHL scoring race and getting most of the attention. beckham_mtl
I'd say that Ryan has a pretty good shot at winning the WHL MVP Award at this point. That would be a terrific accomplishment for an 18 year old third round draft pick.

Although the Ice have one remaining game on the weekend , the Hitmen could technically be playing the Ice 8 straight games since they will meet in the first round of the playoffs . Thinking there will be a few " messages " sent by both teams on friday !! Go Hitmen ... Go Whitey !!! :cheer:
Guest MTL_RULES
as of right now, he's in 2nd place with 89 points in 71 games. 1st place, Zach Hamill, has 93 points in 68 games. Can't wait to see him on Team Canada next year.

Guest yvanc12
" Whitey " and the Calgary Hitmen take a 3-1 series lead into Cranbrook tonight to face Ben Maxwell and the Kootenay Ice . So far , Ben has kinda been a non-factor in the series ( 1g 2a ) while "Whitey " ( 2g 2a ) has been key in the faceoff circle , especially winning the draw in overtime for the winning goal Thursday night . Hopefully , they can pull out the BIG win tonight !! GO HITMEN !! :cheer:
Guest WantMoreCups
woah i hope this game is a 6-5 win for the hitmen so ryan can get 5 goals and 1 assist and ben can get 4 goals and one assist... imagine that.... Guest yvanc12
Game #5 Hitmen ( Whitey ) vs Kootenay ( Maxwell ) ..... the Ice are back in the series after a decisive 4-0 win last night . Hitmen lead it 3-2 with game 6 at the Saddledome tomorrow ( Monday ) night . The only real action for Habs prospects last night was when Ben dropped the gloves for a tilt with Freddie Pettersson with 3 minutes to go . Won't go down as one of the classic junior scraps though ! Refferees did a GREAT job of stopping a potential line brawl in this one . "Whitey" was a -1 while Ben had 1a . Should be a real barn-burner at the dome tomorrow !!! GO HITMEN !!! Guest kjdriedger
Watched the last two games. White is much more impressive than Maxwell. WHo is a major disappointment in IMO. White has been good in the face-off circle. He also gets first line power play time and helps kill penalties (second line I think). He shows good hustle and decent grit. He has a pretty good shot also. He passes the puck very well and reads the play nicely, with good anticipation. White also seems to be a bit more of a leader than Maxwell. Both these teams (Hitmen and Ice) are very young and as 18 year olds they are playing in a series with same age peers for the most part. I expected both White and Maxwell to be significantly better than they are. They both have looked completely average amongst their peers on the ice. They do not stand out. I really think that both have a tremendously long ways to go to make the big leagues - real outside shots. Both were drafted higher than they should have been. That said, White is certainly a better prospect than Maxwell - who, frankly, looks subpar on a regular basis, especially for a high pick. He is brutal in the face-off circle, and his line seems to play behind their own blueline 60% of the time. ALthough he does keep his head on a swivel to assume def responsibilties, he still plays at 2/3 or 1/2 speed most of the time. Just not impressed with Maxwell at all. The good - he seems strong on the puck (although he is bad on face offs) and has a knack for digging it free or maintianing possession in scrambles. He also has a hard shot. But all said and done, he looks like a mid range player, even at this level. So, that's my take after watching them specifically the last two games (and not the games really - cause I am from out of town and don't have an allegiance to either team).
