Eaves skating again, but not close to return

Birthday boy playing waiting game after getting on ice

One day after his 23rd birthday, Patrick Eaves was glad to be feeling well enough to put on his skates again.

He had celebrated his birthday on Tuesday by skating for the first time since suffering a concussion on a thunderous hit by Colby Armstrong on April 15 in Game 3 of the first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While Eaves skated again yesterday, another good sign, he's still a long way from getting back into the lineup.

How he feels after these two days of skating may provide a better indication of when he might return. If his headaches return, he'll be told to take his skates off.

"It felt really good to be out there breaking a sweat and snapping the puck around," he said. "I felt pretty good and decided to try.

"The (doctors) just said it's a slow process and I have to be up front with them about how I feel. I'm going day-by-day."

Eaves has suffered at least one other concussion in his hockey career, when he was at Boston College, but he said he has never had "anything this bad."

Senators coach Bryan Murray wouldn't even offer a guess at when when Eaves might return.

"He feels a lot better," said Murray. "He has got a smile on his face, finally. It's very definitely a good sign."
