Guest js2
I find it odd that the Rangers gave him up for a 7th round pick. Somethings gotta be wrong that don't show in the stats.

Nothing wrong that isn't wrong with any other 7th rounder. Anybody we draft at the seventh round is going to be a project. We just went and got a project we know as our scouts see him when they go to watch Ben Maxwell.

Guest spankydriscoll
that seems to be the general consensus on the board, and frankly, it makes sense.
Guest hogtownhabsfan
I like the acquisition. Russell has great offensive upside and his plus/minus shows that he is defensively responsible. Well worth a 7th rounder, especially considering he is 2 years closer to contributing than any 7th rounder would be.
Guest devils_fury2
We picked ourselves one heck of a good prospect if he's anything like his twin brother Kris Russell, Kris has played for Medicine Hat the last few seasons and was their captain this year, he also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships and probably as far as skill and offensive talent, he was not only the best defenceman in the WHL but also one of the top overall players...so hopefully Ryan Russell can bring more of the same to the table...I think its a steal of a pick up for Montreal, anybody know if Russell and Ben Maxwell were on the same line together during the season?? I'm sure they probably were, atleast on the power play anyways

Anyone know if Russell has a year of junior eligibility left or if he can go to Hamilton or Cincinnati next season? PS: Try keeping Caps Lock "off" next time. Russell can play in the WHL, AHL or ECHL. I doubt he plays in the WHL, I would think they will give him a look in Hamilton and if he can't get a regular spot then he could end up in the ECHL like they did with Mathieu Aubin. But it all depends on how the roster shapes up in Hamilton next year, it's too early to say who will be around and who will be gone.

Like D'ags, he is another player who has shown increased maturity this year, he seems to always be in the heart of the action. Today he was finally rewarded.....a hat-trick and at least two (and maybe even all) of the goals were short handed. A well deserved first star performance today! Flunky
I figured we picked Russell up just to help Maxwell's development in Hamilton, by providing him with a former linemate and familiar face to lessen the shock of jumping from the WHL to the pros. If he turns into an NHL player, that would be an incredible bonus. So far, he's pacing Maxwell in goals, with each tallying six to date in the season. Way to go Ryan! utreder
Apparently he's really fast too, I remember he beat Grabovski in the speed skating competition last year, that's saying something.
Flunky
And Russell can't run home to Russia either. That's good.
Flunky
Ryan Russell reached the 20-goal plateau last night, as he netted a pair of markers in a 6-2 Hamilton victory. Russell has recorded 39 points through 77 games this season with an impressive +27 rating, and interestingly enough, he has more goals than assists to date. There's no R 'n' R for this kid. Plus I couldn't stand to see him on page three anymore with Janne Lahti.
Johnny_rudeboy
After being outshot 13-7 in the 1st period Hamilton outshot Manitoba 36-12 in the last 2 periods. They scored 3 power play goals in 10 tries.
