Mn The Count Down - And More

GIJAYNE

Recommended Posts

Good morning fellow Hockey fans and welcome back for another season. It is with great honor and privilege that I launch the MN thread for its third year. For many of us this means life is back to normal!

I know that the season does not begin for another 17 days, but given the complexity the MN thread reached at last year's end, I thought we could make use of the pre-season to get organized. I look forward to many more participants this year, and for our veterans and execs to help pave way.

I wish the HABS and all its fans a wonderful year that will hopefully stretch all the way to July. On that note, the first update will follow shortly.

THE BEGINNING:

It seems the summer wasn't long enough for Syd the Kid to mature. The Crosby show is still plentiful, and the acting remains terrible. I find it unfortunate that such wonderful raw tallent is, at the least in my eyes, tarnished by diving and exaggerate. Crosby will undoubtedly break most records and establish him self as one of the best to ever play the game, but his childish behaviour and sense of entitlement is a real downer. In my opinion, his coach is to blame. Michelle either has to grow up him self and tell Crosby that if he fakes being hurt to draw penalties his hair will fall out, he’ll go blind and he'll loose his left dingle berry. The alternative is to teach him how to better draw penalties and improve on his 70 adult industry film calibre acting. This is one hockey fan that wants to cheer on Syd the Kid, and is convinced that one day he will. But that won't be till such date where Crosby will own up to being

outplayed some times and not try to rectify his errors by pulling a....dare I say Ribeiro?

Kovalev is...well Kovalev. I have been both a believer that he costs the team a lot in turn overs and a lack of effort, however I have also been a supporter of him in that he is a strong player, great tool for the coach and not to take anything away from Shelly, but him and Markov were the quarter backs of the power play. He him self probably said it best: "I make mistakes. It's not my first and won't be my last. But I make good plays 70% of the time". It's hard to argue with him when he puts up performances like last night. In fact more often than not, when he is given the ice time (even after he pulls a brain fart) net net he ends up contributing to the team's success in a positive matter. Perhaps the coaching staff and especially the fans have to accept the fact that he is a 3 step forward, 1 step back kind of guy, and hold judgement till the end of a stretch. I'm not sure if I'm ready to accept failure in the short term to gain success in the long term, but maybe that's my shortfall as a rabid HABS fan. At least I have the piece of mind that I don't have to make such decisions. That's left to a management team and coaching staff that has proven through out their careers to possess a knowledge of the game at a level beyond any armchair GM (including yours truly) who would be willing to tar feather and parade the whole team down St Catherine in their privates following a three game loosing streak, and replace the players with Chimps in skates arguing that at least the entertainment value will be worth our time to watch $8.50 we pay for our beer.

On a closing note, was I the only one who was more than disappointed when Vertigo hit the sound waves following our first goal? In its fourth year now, that song is as fitting in a hockey arena as a Britney/Paris duet with Frank Sinatra.

What do I have to do to be a MN scout?

MN scouts provide preview reports and stats to the MN thread on upcoming games for teams playing in our conference to help MN'ers make predictions on those games and just for information how things are going in our conference.

I use a combination of these:

Good morning Admiral  Good to have you back and eager. I see you're diving right into it. :towel:

Scouts have become one of the most valuable team members here, especially with the advent of the predictions game we play. I look forward to another wonderful, plentiful and informative year.

admiral brian: I'll be the Islanders scout again if the spot is not already taken

Done Kindred, Isles it is fur dich... I'm assuming some regulars like HTL (where are you?), yourself Cenner et al. will accomodate their scouting duties and teams from last year (please... it will make life that much easier to start with)

I figured it would be easy to stick with the same team but I have no trouble fillin in when needed. Since Im going to the preseason game tomorrow in Moncton it would give me a little more insight to the Islanders

Hi guys...

nice to see that the MN tradition lives on!

How is the lil HLD?

Like most Habs fans, I am always, irrationally optimistic....

So I predict a great season for our Habs and I have no doubt the MN team will check in for duty...

I've been MIA for most of the summer, but am glad to be back.

Keep up the great work, guys.

ryderfan! Good to see you again. I'm afraid all of us in here are guilty of irrational optimism! Wouldn't be MN without blind faith :D

Junior HLD is doing great. He had his jersey on yesterday while watching the game. I'll make sure to take a picture of him tonight and post it with tomorrows update. However we will not be able to claim the title of the youngest HABS fan this year. That title will belong to junior Cenner. I received pics during the summer of the bundle of joy (I won't post them...that's an honour for Cenner to boast as the proud father this year :D)

Looking forward to seeing you in here more often. And I can't wait till the whole team is back. Mateus, HTL, Cenner, NWT, chocolate and the rest of the team are bound to be back soon.

And best of all we have an MN artist this year (HHH) to help us digitally challenged to make this thread easier on the eyes (check out the new MN banners...swanky :D)

Okay... you'll make the cut (not because I'm desperate... well maybe I am... well kinda?) and though I was going to say everyone would have to work for it to make the team... there are stars out there that just can walk in after training camp is all said and done without a worry in the world... yah that's you HTL.

PS - I'm the wrong guy for smilies... I miss them too... this is soooooooo... boring without them... well not really that boring... just not as much fun... then again fun is what you make it... isn't it?

when they changed the forum over we lost all the old smiles that kimmy_ok made up. I enjoyed them too and I wouldn't think it would be hard to re do them for this new forum but then again I only know how to turn the computer on, not how to create stuff ;)

ICECHIPS... TSN.CA

The Latest from on the Canadiens - Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak will split goaltending duties Tuesday against the Penguins. Price was in the starter's net at the morning skate. Andrew Archer is undergoing more testing at the hospital on his facial injury. Mathieu Carle has a sprained left knee and it is estimated he'll need eight weeks recovery time.

Chris Higgins is not expected to play any exhibition games this week while he rehabs off-season shoulder surgery. Head coach Guy Carbonneau says Higgins will play the last two exhibition games on the schedule. He also says Higgins feels he could play Monday against the Penguins but the club is resting him for precautionary reasons. Through the first three days of training camp Higgins did not take part in any full contact drills.

Defenceman Patrice Brisebois failed his medical due to a groin injury. He will not take part in on-ice sessions that begin Friday and will be re-evaluated in this week. - TSN

Pardon the new guy but what's this MN stuff all about?

No pardons required ;)

MN is a thread which started three years ago with the premise of keeping track of the "Magic Number" required to make the playoffs. Over the years, it has grown significantly to include various and exciting tandems. For example, you will notice that there is a daily MN article recapping the previous night's events. There is an MN Jeopardy game where people ask trivia questions about the HABS and hockey in general relating to the current MN number. We run a predictions game where members post predictions for the night's games outcomes and we keep a point system. We have scouts which will do some daily research on teams on game night to inform the community and help the predictions game. We have half a dozen spreadsheet and table updated daily to display stats and probable outcomes given historical data. Etc...etc...

So as you can see MN is a versatile thread where many of us have found a haven to help the days between game nights go by. Most importantly however, the thread users all have one thing in common. As ryderfan so eloquently put it, we all possess an irrational optimism of our beloved HABS.

Hope that answers your question. For further information, check out the MN blog:
