montreal is split right in the middle when it comes to language. 53% francophone and 47% anglophone. few people know that montreal is very much an english city and the bloc know that if they lose montreal their dream of independance is over, and pauline marois should take english lessons before opening her ugly mouth.

well it's painfully obvious why many players do not want to play hockey in Montreal. where else would you, as an NHL player, become part of statewide political debate?

disgusting.

at least mario dumont has a head on his shoulders, he knows where to draw the line, its as if we have monkeys for politicians, they think the montreal canadiens are the source of the problem.

im glad to see his team mates come out and defend him, and saku can speak french, when the atmosphere allows it, it says it all on rds.ca if you can read french...

I agree. Marois is one of the many problems we have in Quebec, she's the worst racist politician I've seen in years and unfortunately she is on our homeland. Personally, I am born from Asian parents and I am more fluent in French, yet I hate when she dares to bring up that law project. Anyway, what does language have to do now since the NHL has become an international industry rather than just a North American industry of the 1970s and 1980s? Just drop the language thing already! Koivu plays for the city of Montreal and honours the city, end of the line.

Back to hockey: when I saw Koivu score that way on the SO, I guess Saku should use that move more often to score SO goals since that move is unstoppable most of the time just like Mikko does with the Wild. :D

To me Koivu doesn't look very good so far this season. Some nights he has been almost invisible. I hope there's no conflicts in the dressing room now that Kovalev has decided to carry the team on his shoulders.

Kovalev carrying the team on his shoulders? Koivu is still leading the team in scoring, I do believe. So how is that Kovy carrying the team on his shoulders? Yes, Kovy has had a great start to the season too, they both have, but to dismiss Koivu like that is rude.

Koivu hasn't had a horrible game this season, yes he's had some that were sub-par, but not horrible.

It's not just what Koivu does on the ice you realize, it's what he does in the locker room as well and that's lead the team.

Why do we even waste our breath talking about it ? who cares what these bozo's in suits say. There's an old saying that comes to mind

when I think of those people. It's a two word saying , and the second word being "them"...that sir, is what I have to say to those clowns.

SAKU FOR MAYOR! let Saku show em how to be a politican

TSN published Koivu's response. Seems he's taking it in stride ;)

Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu was on the defensive with the media again on Wednesday, and this time the issue was language.

The veteran forward from Finland was mentioned Tuesday by Quebec lawyer Guy Bertrand at provincial public hearings looking into reasonable accommodation for religious minorities. Bertrand was upset that during the Canadiens' Oct. 13 home opener, Koivu, as part of a videotaped pre-game ceremony, introduced his teammates in English only.

"I have the right to be served in my language," he said. "He has been playing for 12 years (for the Canadiens). He is married to a francophone. It demonstrates contempt for our language. It is not respectful."

Koivu, whose wife Hanna speaks French but was born in Finland, was quick to address Bertrand's remarks.

"I'm not perfect," he told a scrum of reporters at the Bell Centre. "There's nothing we can do when politicians have opinions on the team or on me, but sometimes you can't control what's being said out there."

Koivu speaks limited French, and has done so at team functions like hospital visits with children.

"It's a bit easier talking to kids than talking to you (Michael) in French," Koivu jokingly told TSN's Michael Whalen. "And I talk to my wife in French in the right atmosphere," he added with a wink. "You know what I'm talking about."

General manager Bob Gainey, a former captain who will have his number retired by the Canadiens this season, has previously mentioned the importance of a Canadiens captain being able to speak French.

"Bob Gainey was a model during the time he was captain," Koivu added. "He made the effort to learn French. When I arrived here, I had to learn English and it took me some time before mastering it. In an ideal world, I should also speak French. But I'm not perfect in that sense."

Koivu, who received the 'C' in September of 2000, is the Canadiens' second-longest serving captain behind the legendary Jean Beliveau.

Look at this video, and then talk about how important language is.....

http://broadband.tsn.ca/?vid=5454

i have watched this video many times and each time it reminds me what kind of a man saku is. hearing the crowd chant his name sends shivers down my spine, game in and game out he receives one of the biggest pops from the crowd no matter what language he speaks, eat that bertrand!

You know I would not blame Koivu if he did retire, call it quits or demand a trade or go back to Finland. Koivu is so much better than that ignorant lawyer and I know he would never do it. I just wish there was some way us the fans could speak out or start a petition....which I know petitions are NOT ALLOWED here but that was soooo uncalled for and Koivu and his family along with the rest of the Habs does not deserve this.

Koivu will always be on topof my lists as a leader in the NHL and captain

I think Saku is the man in shootouts, what a deke! That said Tomas Plekanec is terrible at shootouts, how did he get the nod. And Kovalev should be great given his stickhandling, but he doesn't score much (seems like he is overthinking his moves).

There are many in this forum who must have been elated to see Higgins-Koivu-Kovalev together and scoring! We should try the power line for a while see how it goes. Koivu might even break 90 points with those linemates, imagine that!

Koivu's the man, end of the story.

Really though, next trade deadline we should be getting po'd at the media not gainey for making the big signings.

I wouldn't want to play in MTL either.

Koivu is a hockey player, he's not there to save the French language or recruit French speaking people into Quebec.

I believe it was Habs icon the Rocket Richard who worked hard to break down language barriers, goes both ways.

What big signings would Gainey make at the trade deadline?

You mean trading for players? Because it doesn't matter if a guy who gets traded here wants to play here or not, I don't understand your point.

Ha, that one made me chuckle too.

At least it looks like he's not taking it too seriously, which he really shouldn't be.

Hopefully tomorrow night he'll light up the scoreboard (or notch a few assists) to shut the critics up.

If all that Saku has done for us so far hasn't shut these guys up, nothing will.

A Stanley Cup might. But until that point, I think you're right. They're just looking for a reaction and that's exactly what everyone is giving them.

The Captain HAS to speak French?

He has to be able to communicate with his team...We've got:

English

French (Both Quebec French & European French)

Russian

Belarussian

Czech

...am I missing anyone?

How many languages does he have to speak?

As long as he can communicate with his team....he's doing his job. The media (for the most part) is bi-lingual. They just want to start crap.

I notice even with RDS they tend to favour the French speaking players. It's not too often you see an English interview on there unless it's Crosby (every game we play against the Pens) or Carey Price.

But how far does this go? When Carey becomes our starting goaltender, potentially franchise goaltender, is he expected to speak French? I'm not sure how much French he speaks, if any. But I mean come on, Saku isn't the only guy on the Habs who doesn't speak French. Captain or not, who cares.

He's there to win games, better the Canadiens, not recruit French speaking folk.
