The problem being he apparently had an attitude problem here. Perhaps it could have been worked out over time like the Kovy situation, but Gainey must have felt that it couldn't. Perhaps the trade made Ribs reflect on where his career was going and made him become a better player in Dallas. I would have liked to keep him or at least have gotten something worthwhile for him, but it's done and you can't go back. I like Pleks a lot and I think if he has the same linemates next year they are going to put up as good of numbers as Ribs is putting up this year in Dallas.

Just some food for thought.

I was watching the Dallas/Minnesota game last night at work and, being a habs fan, I paid particular attention to Mike Ribeiro. Watching him play, I couldn't help but think that he plays very much like Plekanec. He's a little finer and a little farther along in his game, but I noticed striking similarities. While Pleks seems to have more speed, they both skate the same way. Ribeiro seems to make a living out of coasting around in the offensive zone, twisting and turning and dishing off a soft, short pass. Pleks uses the saucer pass much more, especially to catch Kostistyn blazing down the wing, but their passing for the most part almost seems identical. Ribeiro's game is played south of the hashmarks on both sides of the ice, like plekanec and he is very adept at holding onto the puck, curling around and gently threading a pass to a teammate. Both seems to minimize stickhandling with the puck, preferring instead to push it, and use relatively straight sticks.

Thing is that Ribeiro is established now and just signed a 5 year 25 million dollar contract with the Stars.

There's a thread in Around the League for Mike Ribeiro. Discuss him and his new contract there. :)

I know, I was however replying to the post that was comparing Ribeiro with Pleks.

I think Pleks shows everybody why we don´t need Ribeiro any more.

Pleks is a shifty playmaker with a lot of offensive skills and he plays well defensively, too. And all this combined with great work ethic and attitude. He will be a star in this league, but a quiet one.

I`ll take him over homeboy Ribs any day. And I actually like Ribs, too!

Stop blaming Gainey for the trade. Ribeiro was done in Montreal (as a hockey player).

Go Pleks!!

As much as it sucks to see Ribs doing soo well over in Dallas and getting that big contract. Getting rid of him cleared the way for pleks to really pick up his game.

A beast of a game tonight, two goals, threatening all over the ice, 50% in the faceoff circle (and won the key faceoff at the end that made the empty-net goal possible), and excellent PK work. Just when I was thinking to myself that Pleks has the weakest shot on his line, he rips two great goals to show he's no slouch in that department either. Turtleneck power!

I remember a few seasons ago, when Plekanek was playing in Hamilton or Quebec (I forget which), someone on here, or maybe it was TSNs comments section or somewhere was just commenting on a few players in Hamilton/Quebec. One that he mentioned was Plekanek, who he compared to a younger Koivu. I thought he was crazy, but Plekanek is turning into an excellent player - and sort of similar to Koivu (small playmaking center with average goalscoring skills). I wouldn't call him a true "#1 center", and am not sure if he ever will be, but I think with good enough wingers, he can effectively play on a top line. Otherwise, he'd be an amazing second line center. A young, defensively responsible, playmaking center who is improving in the goalscoring department, what more could you ask for? I suppose a bit more size, but that's hardly within his control.

Anyways, of all players this season, I'd have to say Plekanek has exceeded my expectations the most. I was expecting 50-60 points tops, with a maximum of 20 goals. He is on pace to easily pass those numbers.

Hes the best looking guy on the line too heh. He actually had an interview on versus and he sounded a bit like Jagr. Hes got the deep cezch sounding voice and accent.

The best goatee on the team for sure. I feel for the Kostitsyn brothers, they dont even have peachfuzz!

his faceoff percentage is a bonus. He is becoming increasingly reliable and I wouldn't have a moments hesitation to throw him out there for a key faceoff late in the game.

He is taking some of the pressure off of Smolinski, who has been less than stellar in that department.

Another player reminding me why i thought it was a bad move to only offer 2 year contracts to all the important young players on our team.

And while he may be compared to koivu.... he has a much, much better shot and has that scorer instinct, while koivu will look to deke out a goalie almost every time.

What a game, i didnt expect either of those shots to go in. That first one kind of reminded me of Markovs move we have all seen in the past, and the second one, when he looked pass held it for a few seconds then shot. WOW :). Too bad that guy dove all over the ice so kovy couldnt pass it back to him for the hat trick. He deserved it. Great game
