Guest RussianRifle: AK-27
This is your chance, Bryan, take the bull by the horns and show us you're worth that $2 million and NTC! Forget taking the bull by the horns Bryan. Instead, take some defensive zone faceoffs...and win them! I, for one, have given up on Smolinski as a 20 goal guy. That is a number that appears destined to stay in the past. Which is fine, but he must contribute within the paramaters of his role. Win faceoffs and execute on the defensive side of the puck. Guest overlords
He was abysmal tonight. He had so many turnover's in the first, I want chips back NOW. He was coasting the whole freakin game. He has no intensity either.
Guest js2
I'm willing to brush this game off from him since he's just back from an injury but he must be better come next game.

I was waiting for someone to say this. He is NOT just coming off an injury. He's been fine for a week or two. Everyone keeps giving him the benefit of the doubt but he's just not worth it. We got ripped off with this guys contract.

Even if he has been fine for a week this is his first game back since his injury and it takes one or two games to shake off those cobwebs. Give him a chance! He had a chance for the first x number of weeks of the season and showed he couldn't care less about this team. It's just a paycheque i guess. Guest QbGamer
The good thing is that hes a VET, which is great come playoff time, and he is replacable, incase there are injuries he can move in and out of the line up. He isnt what we expected when signing him in the off season, but we will use him to the best of our abilities

I would have preferred to see Tom play but we do need to stay positive with Smokes and hope that he can turn it around. He is a veteran player playing in a huge market with alot of added pressure. I know it's not an excuse but let's cut the guy a break and see what he does in the upcoming games.

Guest QbGamer
I actually had the same triple post on a diff thread, so its not just you, must have been a glitch or something. But we need to get this guy going again, he has a 2 million $ salary. He isnt all that bad, we just gotto get those old bones of his moving out there
Guest ChuckNorris
IMO we should wait and see what happens in the playoffs. Veteran guys are usually great assets in the postseason. But if he doesn't turn it around in the playoffs OR make us miss the playoffs, then meh...

tmash
I'm way out of my league when it comes to dicussing the CBA but I'm almost 100% sure that an injury doesn't void a contract unless explicitely specified, and therefore salaries still count towards the cap. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though. One thing I'm not sure of is if a player is injured for a really long time though (as in an entire season or more)....I'm not sure whether a team can place a player on long term IR and avoid his salary counting against the cap. The players still get payed (although I think it's by an insurance company, not the team). However, this money does not count against the cap, so we do save cap space with injuries Technically speaking, it does count against the cap, but whatever salary he gets while on long term injury is added to our cap, so if he missed the entire season, our cap would go from 50.3 million to 52 million - with his salary counting against it. But to make things simple, even though technically not true, as far as we're concerned, salary while on long term injury doesn't count against the cap. Kindred
That's provided he's placed on the injury reserve list, correct? exactly, I can't remember which team did it the other year but one of the teams from the new york area had someone on the long term IR and the salary didn't count against the cap/ Just to bring this back to last night and some of the complaints I have been reading on the forum Smolinski had 1 point, finished a +2 on the night and won 50% of his face offs. What exactly were we expecting from him? hate trick? 80% in the faceoff circle??
Guest habs_fan1160
He wasn't horrible last night - he played like he always does. No one had a problem with it before, so I don't see why we do now. He's not a stellar or spectacular player and we all knew that before the IR. Not trying to overly defend this guy, because he's not one of my favourites, but he's definatley not a sniper or a big point getter anymore and that's not even his purpose/role on the team. fourtrax
I don't want points or goals at this point. I just want defensive stability, a good faceoff percentage, and a consistent effort level. So far this season, I have yet to see any of those three things with anything approaching regularity. It's disappointing because I was quite happy with the Smolinski signing this offseason.
tommyv
he made some brutal decisions in his own end, and those stuck out like sore thumbs more than his faceoff% or his assist, luckily for us his brain farts in the defensive zone didn't end up in our net, but they easily could have, and thats the problem I have with his game right now. Guest vaya_
I don't know what he was doing on the 5-on-3... Defensively, he's been average at best. I would much rather have Chip back in the lineup.

I would much rather have Chip back in the lineup. I was really confused about that too. After Koivu and Kovalev, there are at least 6 other forwards I'd rather see on a 5 on 3 before Smolinski. franck5890
He certainly seems to have lost a step or two this year, even from his performances last season.
Guest AlexK
I think it's generally between him and Ryder at this point because they are the only two right handed shots. I'd take Ryder out there any day no offense. Smokes has contributed 5 on 3 a few times this year, but I think Ryder is clearly the more skilled player.
